That, it was currently believed by the entire portion of the population who speculated on the sub ject, was kept open by the evil spirits. Certain it was that no human foot ever trod the narrow, tortuous line that ran through the brakes as deviously as the noiseless stagnant ditches that curved through the jungle, where the musk-rat played and the moccasin slept unmolested. Yet there it lay, plain and well-defined, month after month, and year after year, as NO Haid Pawn itself stood, amid its sur rounding swamps, all undisturbed and un changing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red, White and Black: Twelve Stories of the South HE was washing his ear with a finger dripping with lather, his face screwed up into a grotesque mask, when suddenly the words raced through his brain: a small portion of the ruling class breaks away to make common cause with the revolutionary class, the class which holds the future in its hands. He withdrew his finger slowly from his ear, and sat motionless in the water with his eyes still shut, his hand still poised beside his head, his finger still extended in the manner of a speaker about to make a vigorous affirmative gesture. Gradually he relaxed. His face lost its tight, um natural lines, his eyes blinked wide Open, and he dropped his hand slowly into the tub. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bond and Free: A Tale of the South Upon relating incidents which occurred under the observation of the writer, the suggestion has been frequently made to her that they should be recorded in a book, and placed within the reach of those who are interested in studying the habits of the Southern people before the late war. This volume is presented to the public in compliance with that request, since slavery is now so far removed from us by time that it has become historical. The contingencies of "the peculiar institution" invaded the domestic circle, made children masters and mistresses from infancy, causing them to be reared rulers over their sable playmates, and impressed on their unfolding minds ideas of superiority in. birth, which, as they advanced to manhood or womanhood, qualified them to exercise authority to a degree inconceivable by those raised with different surroundings. That miscegenation was of frequent occurrence is not to be denied; but mulatto children, being held by their darker mothers, were identified with the maternal race; yet there were instances where amalgamation was extended to successive generations, and State laws were enacted liberating those who possessed a certain degree of consanguinity with the Caucasian race. In the slave markets, among which that of New Orleans was pre-eminent, quadroon girls, possessing superior personal attractions, commanded a high price; and in exceptional instances, where they were received into families, and enjoyed advantages of mental and moral education, they became women of intelligence and sterling worth. Our heroine is not a myth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Summer-Land: A Southern Story It was said by Gray, and has been said by a good many others, that "any man, with talent or without, could write a useful and entertaining book, if he would only faithfully, and without affectation, detail what he has seen and heard in a sphere which the rest of the world had never seen, and was curious about." The author thinks that his little volume of Journeyings may claim to fulfil to some extent those conditions of a good book. With the exception of a change of names, and the coloring of a story, a faithful endeavor has been made to depict a true and honest picture of life and scenery in the South; with sketches of character, customs, etc., among the planters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glen: A Story of the South Its adjacent plantations presented scenes in the cotton picking season, and at other times, that give pleasure to look back upon across the years that have intervened. The writing of the story has, for this reason, been to him a pleasant task. Unpretentious though it is, it has been the work of many of his best moments, extending over a period of three years of his life; and no lady ever lingered over a mirror adding the finishing touches to her beauty as he has lingered over its stanzas in an effort to polish them. He has done what he could to make this booklet worthy of being both a welcome guest in every Southern home and a visitor that should neither be offensive nor unwelcome in any home elsewhere in America. Book Hero in Homespun A Tale of the Loyal South Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hero in Homespun A Tale of the Loyal South Classic Reprint written by William E. Barton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero in Homespun: A Tale of the Loyal South How much of this book is history and how much is fiction will be apparent to readers familiar with the history. To extend popular knowledge of the Civil War as it affected a large but almost unrecognized body of our people, this volume has been written. The form of fiction has been employed to permit a larger use of incident and personal experience, and to allow greater freedom of treatment, but the historical background is believed to be true to fact. I have thought well not to locate too definitely the home of my principal characters. The name and some of the characteristics of Roundstone Creek, in Rockcastle County, Kentucky, have been borrowed and removed to a valley some fifty miles remote. With this exception, the geography of the book is correct. I have had to allow my characters freedom of speech, even though they sometimes speak unwisely or too harshly. They lived in a day when men's passions ran high, and it would misrepresent them to tone down their utterances to the more temperate spirit of our time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irene Liscomb: A Story of the Old South There was hardly ever a more perfect blonde than this Southern girl, with her graceful, self-poised personality. Her brides outfit was all finished; even the last package of toilet knickknacks had been received from Philadelphia, and duly commented on by her nearest friends. The house party had been assembled for two days already. Games, and the ball, which was yet to occur before the departure of the interesting couple, were enthusiastically discussed. In the grand old mahogany room of the large plantation house, the bridal gown had been spread out on the bed for a last inspection of its rich lace, and silken, vapory fabric. The veil was rose point lace; one her mother had worn. It had been manufactured at Venice. "No, no, I cannot try it on. It is bad luck to try on the wedding dress and remove it before being married in it," asserted the bride-to-be. "Dats right, Mis' Rene.
