Book The Bay State Forty Fourth

Download or read book The Bay State Forty Fourth written by De Forest Safford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bay State Forty-Fourth: A Regimental Record We began our march at daybreak, Sunday morning, Nov. 2d. About six miles from Washington our advance met the rear guard of the enemy. One of our cavalry had his horse shot, and was taken prisoner. About five o'clock in the afternoon the rebels made a stand near a small creek. The battle, or perhaps more properly, skirmish, was begun by the artillery. Two companies of the 44th Massachusetts were ordered forward. The firing of musketry was kept up only about a quarter of an hour. The remainder of our brigade, Col. Stevenson's, was then ordered to advance. The column halted just as our company reached the middle of the stream. We stood in the water above our knees just forty minutes. The rebels had got our range, and the grape-shot and shell began to strike uncomfortably near. The old soldiers tell us that our position was a trying one. We could not see the enemy, or use our pieces we could only stand and listen to the shot and shell plashing in the water about us. The shell striking in the stream did not explode. We at last marched forward slowly, lying in ambush a part of the time. Our skirmishers were endeavoring to find out the position of the enemy; they were not very successful. About one o'clock we found ourselves drawn into an ambuscade. Re had halted opposite rifle-pits, and the rebels poured in a volley at a distance of not more than ten yards. At the first musket report our officers gave the order, Down I This was all that saved us from being cut to pieces none were killed, and only three wounded. Our second lieutenant received two balls in the leg; both wounds, however, were slight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Noanett: A Story of Old Virginia and the Massachusetts Bay Time printed. Though first set down (as appears by the context) for the edification of the writer's children, Mr. Carew's views upon some subjects, notably Cromwell and the later Puritans, would have rendered their publication inopportune in New England at a time much before the present. But if he sets forth these matters in a somewhat novel light, he is severer still upon certain phases of early life in Virginia. He speaks without fear or favour, and I have printed it as written, altering only the spelling; and although occasionally he uses words only suited to the robuster stomachs of his time, I have let them stand: partly that the sweet and noble temper of his story atones for them, partly that our own stomachs are a trifle over queasy (as to words alone). To use his own, the fight ing companies of the Old Dominion were but a ribald crew and the events, even the incidents, which he narrates I have found curiously verified in memoirs nearly contemporary, notably the diaries of his acquaintance. Book Casco Bay Yarns Classic Reprint

Download or read book Casco Bay Yarns Classic Reprint written by Williams Haynes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Casco Bay Yarns This little book was begun, quite unintentionally, five summers ago by my going out early one morning to help haul a line of lobster pots in order to gather material for a magazine article. What I learned gossiping with the lobstermen was so interesting that I was tempted to visit a neighboring island, and I was gradually coaxed into making a regular pilgrimage among the "Calendar Isles." In the end, I spent several weeks in the Library of the Maine Historical Society, digging out the early history of the Bay. A great many very different people have contributed to this book - some a fact or a fable: others a glimpse of character or a typical phrase. I cannot thank all individually, but I must especially thank Mr. Robert G. Albion, of Portland and Great Chebeague Island, and Miss Evelyn L. Gilmore, Librarian of the Maine Historical Society, for their help in collecting historical material. I am also indebted to the editors of "The Casco Bay Breeze," "Forecast," "Travel" "Lippincott's" and "Outing" for their permission to publish here the "yarns" that first appeared in their magazines. Book The State House in Boston Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book The State House in Boston Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by David Pulsifer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State House in Boston, Massachusetts It has been said that the beauty and advantages of this situation, which induced the Legislature to make choice of it for the present building, are acknowledged by both natives and foreigners. It vies with the most picturesque scenes in Europe, and will bear comparison with the castle hill of Edinburgh, the famous bay of Naples, or any other most commanding prospect. Previous to its enlargement a few years since, it was de scribed as an oblong building, 173 feet front and 61 deep; it consists externally of a basement story, 20 feet high, and a principal story, 30 feet. This, in the centre of the front, is covered with an attic 60 feet wide, 20 feet high, which is covered with a pediment. Immediately above this rises a dome, 50 feet diameter and 30 feet high; the whole termi nates with an elegant Circular lanthorn. The basement story is finished plain on the wings, with square windows. The centre is 91 feet in length, and formed of arches which project 14 feet; they form a covered walk below, and sup port a colonnade of Corinthian columns of the same extent above. The outside walls are of large patent bricks. The lower story is divided into a large hall or public walk in the centre, 55 feet square, and 20 feet high, supported by Doric columns; two entries, each 16 feet wide, with two flights of stairs in each; and at the ends offices for the Treasurer, Secretary, Adjutant and Quartermaster General. Book Steam Packets on the Chesapeake

Download or read book Steam Packets on the Chesapeake written by Alexander Crosby Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Packets on the Chesapeake: A History of the Old Bay Line Since 1840 One of the Observances of the Centennial was the publication of a book of limited distribution tracing the company's story from its inception down to the centennial year. This work, printed by the Dietz Press of Richmond, Virginia, was issued under the joint auspices of the Baltimore Steam Packet Company and of The Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia, of which I was then Corresponding Secretary. Since 1940, however, the Old Bay Line and the Nation at large have passed through another World War deeply affecting the destinies of all. So much has happened to men and ships in the interim, that it was logically decided a new edition of the book, brought up to date with additional chapters covering these more recent events, would prove a useful contribution to the literature of the sea. In revising and enlarging the text, the author was given, as on the initial occasion, the unstinted help and encouragement of the Company and, particularly so, from two officials who by now are to be considered old friends, Bob Dunn, president of the Line, and Ray Jones, passenger traffic manager. The following passages, excerpts taken from the preface of the first edition of The Old Bay Line: 1840-1940, are still applicable to this revised work.
