Book Night Stories

Download or read book Night Stories written by Linden Frederick and published by G Arts. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative concept and unique presentation, fine art painter Linden Frederick has created 15 paintings and enlisted and inspired noted writers to create accompanying stories. Renowned authors as diverse and talented as Elizabeth Strout, Ann Patchett, Anthony Doerr, Richard Russo and Lawrence Kasdan, among others, have contributing to expanding the artists' world with their tales, as varied and captivating as the artworks themselves. From concept to realization, Night Stories has been nine years in the making. Finding his work collected by a growing number of authors/screenwriters/playwrights, artist Linden Frederick wondered why they connected so strongly to his work. So he asked, beginning with a conversation with local writer and friend, Richard Russo. His conversations then extended to the other literary figures whose work is included in this book: Luanne Rice, Lois Lowry, Andre Dubus III, Elizabeth Strout, Ann Patchett, Anthony Doerr, Tess Gerritsen, Ted Tally, Lily King, Dennis Lehane, Joshua Ferris, Daniel Woodrell, Louise Erdrich, and Lawrence Kasdan. Each had a unique response, and each agreed to write a short story to accompany one of Frederick's paintings. Frederick is an artist whose work is rooted to small-town America, work that has sometimes been described as "stage sets," and that has provoked the imagination of some of the most important talents of the day. These writers have here commented on Frederick's art in the genre they know best, storytelling. Unlike any other book by a contemporary fine artist, this unique and compelling collection is the best of what a book can be: a perfect entertainment that combines visual and written art offered up by a collaboration of some of the greatest talents in each field.

Book The Book of Ten Nights and a Night

Download or read book The Book of Ten Nights and a Night written by John Barth and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2005 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Ten Nights and a Night offers both a keen introduction to the genius of John Barth and a deeply human argument for the enduring value of literature. Gathering stories written throughout this postmodern master's long career, the collection spans his entire range of styles, from straightforward narrative to experimental metafiction. In the time immediately following September 11, 2001, the veteran writer Graybard spends eleven nights with a nubile muse named WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). The two lovers debate the meaning and relevance of writing and storytelling in the wake of disaster, telling a new tale each night in the tradition of Scheherazade. The Book of Ten Nights and a Night exhibits the thrilling blend of playfulness and illuminating insight that have marked Barth as one of America's most distinguished writers.

Book The Night

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rodrigo Blanco Calderon
  • Publisher : Seven Stories Press
  • Release : 2022-02-08
  • ISBN : 164421041X
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book The Night written by Rodrigo Blanco Calderon and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers who love Bolaño, a new voice of Latin American fiction, winner of the Mario Vargas Llosa Prize. Recurring blackouts envelop Caracas in an inescapable darkness that makes nightmares come true. Real and fictional characters, most of them are writers, exchange the role of narrator in this polyphonic novel. They recount contradictory versions of the plot, a series of femicides that began with the energy crisis. The central narrator is a psychiatrist who manipulates the accounts of his friend, an author writing a book titled The Night; and his patient, an advertising executive obsessed with understanding the world through word puzzles. The author shifts between crime fiction and metafiction, cautioning readers that the events retold are both true and manipulated. This is a political novel about the financial crisis and socio-political division in Venezuela from 2008 to 2010. The title of the book, originally also in English, is a gesture towards Chavism's failure to resist US influence. Yet, the form is unapologetically literary, a reflection on the depiction and distortion of reality through storytelling. Blanco Calderón said about the potential of language, "I am convinced that all the evil in the world begins in them: in words" (Caracas, 2010).

It sprang forth fully formed from the mind of a poor little Black girl who didn’t yet have the words to describe the brilliance she saw in the women in her family, but had heard countless tales of fairies, witches, and magicians. It was just magic to her. And it still is. Black Girls Are Magic became wildly popular in 2013 after CaShawn began using the phrase online (it was later shortened to the hashtag #BlackGirlMagic) to uplift and praise the accomplishments, beauty, and other amazing qualities of Black women.

  • Publisher : Little, Brown
  • Release : 1997-02-01

  • Pages : 592 pages

Download or read book Children of the Night written by Gloria Naylor and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 1997-02-01 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969, Little, Brown and Company published The Best Short Stories by Black Writers, edited by Langston Hughes - the classic compendium of African-American short fiction from 1897 to 1967. Now, a quarter of a century later, Gloria Naylor has compiled an encore volume, Children of the Night, bringing this extraordinary series up to date. Gathering together the most gifted black writers of our time - from 1967 to the present - Naylor has assembled a rich and varied collection of stories. The portrait that emerges of the African-American experience in the post-Civil Rights era is stirring, compelling, sometimes disturbing, and certainly provocative. Naylor has arranged the stories thematically so the reader focuses on a particular subject - slavery, for example, or the family. In the hands of different writers, these themes provide a wealth and variety of human experience. The stories are more than testimonies of the long battle for survival. From a young woman's struggles with her barren faith in Alice Walker's lyrical "The Diary of an African Nun" to an innocent man's involvement in a horrifying act of violence in Ann Petry's "The Witness", they are, as Naylor states in her introduction, "examples of affirmation: of memory, of history, of family, of being". They are stories for all of us "at the beginning: of mankind as a species; of America as a nation; of the African-American as a full citizen".
