This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry, Vol. 1 of 4 It will naturally be expected, upon a new issue of works which may be said to treat ex elusively of a people who form such an im portant and interesting portion of the empire as the Irish peasantry do, that the author should endeavour to prepare the minds of his readers - especially those of the English and Scotch for understanding more clearly their general character, habits of thought, and modes of feel ing, as they exist and are depicted in the subse quent volumes. This is a task which the author undertakes more for the sake of his country than himself; and he rejoices that the demand for the present edition puts it in his power to aid in re moving many absurd pre udices which have existed for time immemorial against his country men. Download or read book Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by William Carleton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry, Vol. 2 The Englishman, whom we will call the historian in swearing, will depose to the truth of this or that fact but there the line is drawn: he swears his oath so far as he knows, and stands still. I m sure, for my part, I don't know I 've said all I knows about it, and beyond this his besotted intellect goeth not. The Scotchman, on the other hand, who is the metaphysician in swearing, sometimes borders on equivocation. He decidedly goes far ther than the Englishman, not because he has less honesty, but more prudence. He will assent to, or deny a proposition for the English man's I don't know, and the Scotchman's I dinna ken, are two very distinct assertions when properly understood. The former stands out a monument of dulness, an insuperable barrier against inquiry, ingenuity, and fancy; but the latter frequently stretches itself so as to embrace hypothetically a particular opinion. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry, Vol. 3 of 4 It was therefore the brisk sale of the First Series, joined to a vacancy in the Author's purse, which he felt rather anxious to have filled up, that induced him to bring out the present work. He hopes it may succeed as well as the others; but that it may succeed better is a wish due to the worthy and liberal publisher who brings it out. The Author was pressed by many of his friends to dedicate this book to some great man; but as he had only a month's notice to look about him, he found himself rather at a loss for time to discover any one worthy of that character - except the Castle porter.1 The public is the only great man at present whose patronage is worth anything to a writer. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry, Vol. 1 of 3 With respect to the contents of this Second Series, the Author has only to Observe, that the volumes constituting the First Series had an excellent sale, considering that they were of Irish manufacture. They are now in a third edition, and much of their success may probably be ascribed to the fact of their never having been puffed; for no man excites more notice than he who runs counter to the fashion. It was, therefore, the brisk sale of the First Series, joined to a vacancy in the Author's purse, which he felt rather anxious to have filled up, that induced him to bring out the present work. He hopes it may succeed as well as the other; but that it may succeed better, is a wish due to the worthy and liberal Publisher who brings it out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems of the Bog: A Tale of the Irish Peasantry The picturesque little hamlet of Killyrooke consisted of one long row of straw-thatched cottages, each having its garden patch stocked with potatoes and cabbages, and graced by a pig-pen. In most of the dwellings a hole in the wall sufficed for a window, while the floor was only the hard-beaten earth. Art had never entered Killyrooke; but nature, so lavish of her bounties to all beautiful Ireland, had not forgotten this remote and quiet nook. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales for Cottagers: Accomodated to the Present Condition of the Irish Peasantry 'jem only answered, that a rolling stone gathers no moss, that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, and that when one is well, it is better to let well alone. Indeed though Stephen was a young lad, he did not like chang ing often, and he was of Jem's mind, when he ad vised him to wait till Morgan was settled in busi ness for himself, and his own time was served, before he should accept of his brother's offer. Morgan found Dublin the place to his mind, for when he had disobliged one master-carpenter, he told a plausible story to another, and was hired; and when he was tired of working, he found plenty of company who were willing to be idle with him. One day he walked out into the country, then went to the play; another day he saw curious sights, and then regaled himself at a porter-house and when all his money was run out, he returned to his work. But this kind of changeable life is not calculated to make a man fond of work, or of any kind of steady, sober conduct. It also in jured his health, which had formerly been good, when his meals and his work came in due course. It was one of them, he that's married to my own fourth cousin, Biddy o'callaghan, that knocked two of my grinders out, for which piece of civility I have just had the satisfaction of breaking a splinter or two in his carcase, being always honestly disposed to pay my debts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry, Vol. 4 of 4 HE following story owes nothing to any colouring or invention of mine; it is unhappily a true one, and to me possesses a peculiar and melancholy interest, arising from my intimate knowledge of the man whose fate it holds up as a moral lesson to Irish landlords. I knew him well, and many a day and hour have I played about his knee, and ran, in my boyhood, round his path, when, as he said himself, the world was no trouble to him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry, Vol. 1 of 2 For this reason, at such times, it is not at all nu usual to see the elders of Irish families touched by pa thos as well as humour. The Irish are a people whose affections are as strong as their imaginations arc vivid and, in illustration of this, we may add, that many a time have we seen them raised to mirth and melted into tears almost at the same time, by a song of the most comic character. The mirth, however, was for the song, and the sorrow for the memory of some he loved relation who had been remarkable for singing it, or with whom it had been a favourite. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Down West: And Other Sketches of Irish Life The authoress of the following interesting sketches of the life of the Irish peasantry has asked me to write a brief preface. I do so with pleasure, both because I consider it much to be desired that English people, both Catholic and Protestant, should know the truth about the habits and customs of the Irish poor, and because it is through such life-sketches as these that this knowledge may be gained. In spite of the difference of language, there is undoubtedly greater affinity between the Irish and the Italian peasant than between the Irish and English of the same class; hence it is difficult for an ordinary Briton, even of the peasant rank, to enter into the mind and feeling of his neighbouring Irish brethren. English people usually consider the Irish as sentimental, perhaps as unpractical dreamers; and doubtless there is much of sentiment in the character of every Celt.
