This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Home and Home Folks, or Leaves From a Parsonage Portfolio, Vol. 1 My readers may possibly recognize here and there a character, the original of which was either a friend or an acquaintance, and perchance some who read these pages will recognize, if not themselves, at least sentiments to which they have at some time given utterance; and while these stories may not interest all, yet I trust there is enough of real home life and heart sympathy to touch an ansuiering chord in the hearts of those to whom it is dedicated, and that the effort to instruct as well as to please will not prove an entire failure. It has not been my aim to have my pictures overdrawn, nor to take any but how pictures of the common every-day life of the common every-day folk, who make up the larger portion of this busy world of ours. It is not the stories of the rich and great that I record, but as a rule only The short and simple annals of the poor, from the little per plexities of the child to the trials and victories of maturer years; from Maggie's trials or Bennie's sim ple faith, to the struggle of the man or woman over the temptation to distrust the watchful oversight of a loving Father, I have tried to be faithful to the real life of the people with whom I have come in contact; and if in my efforts to point a moral or adorn a tale I shall have been the means of lifting up some burdened one, - if I shall have succeeded in pointing some troubled sister to the Source of all consolation, ifi shall have been so fortunate as to trace some steps of the life of those who have gained victories over self or over outside hindrances, footsteps that another similarly situated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Folks, Vol. 1: A Series of Stories by Old Settlers of Fulton Country, Indiana Indiana change from unbroken forest, filled with wild game and inhabited by Indians, to a highly civilized land of cities, fertile farms and comfortable homes. Neither can our boys and girls in this thriving age of education and competition in the affairs of men, understand anything of the hardships endured by the brave men and women who left their kith and kin in other states, came to a strange country, built homes and blazed a way for coming generations to find comfort and competence. It is not my intention to relate any historical data of those early days, when Rochester did not exist, even in fancy, but to tell some of the incidents which are indelibly stamped on my memory, and acquaint a modern public with matters that are of importance to me. When a mere babe, two and one-half years of age, my parents, Ebenezer and Rachel Ward, with their seven children, left their home in New York, and journeyed, by slow degrees, to Indiana, arriving here in about four months. I was too young to remem ber incidents in the overland trip, but recall that my parents fre quently talked of the journey, and said that not far distant from this place, we staid three nights at one house, yet traveled every day, the ground being so soft that our teams and horses were nearly lost in the mire. It was hitch and unhitch, the advance being slow indeed. After a long and patient struggle we reached our destination and became citizens of the Hoosier state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Home Folks in Peace and War When I first heard the story, considera tions of local pride led me to feel that Rowan had been unjustly robbed of the credit that belonged to him; but time cools the ardor of youth, and mellows and sweetens the sources of partisanship. I can say now that Rowan had small advantage over his two famous rivals, when the scent was as high as the saddle-skirts and the pace the kind that kills. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oldtown Folks, Vol. 1 of 2: And Sam Lawson's Oldtown Fireside Stories When their attention was directed towards me, I could feel and respond to all their thoughts and feelings, and was conscious that they could in the same manner feel and respond to mine. Sometimes they would take no notice of me, but carry on a brisk conversation among themselves, principally by looks and gestures, with now and then an audible word. In fact, there were but few with whom I was very familiar. These few were much more constant and uniform in their visits than the great multitude, who were frequently changing, and too much absorbed in their own concerns to think much of me. I scarcely know how I can give an idea of their form and general appearance, for there are no objects in the material world with which I can compare them, and no language adapted to an accu rate description of their peculiarities. They exhibited all possible combinations of size, shape, proportion, and color, but their most usual appearance was with the human form and proportion, but under a shadowy outline that seemed just ready to melt into the invisible air, and sometimes liable to the most sudden and grotesque changes, and with a uniform darkly bluish color spotted with brown, or brownish-white. This was the general appearance of the multitude; but there were many exceptions to this descrip tion, particularly among my more welcome and familiar visitors, as will be seen in the sequel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Folks Many of the sketches contained in Some Folks were written by me during the past five years, and some of them published by Mr. Leslie in his Illus trated Newspaper and his Chimney Corner, from which journals they have been collected by friends who be lieve that in these stories is displayed better work manship than I have since done. For myself, I can claim for them only an unusual degree of that unlite erary and unpopular quality called truthfulness. Although at present mildly tolerated in the East, I was brought up in the West, and have written largely from recollection of some folks 7' I have known, veritable men and women, scenes and incidents, and otherwise through the memories Of Western friends of good eyesight and hearing powers. Book Shoddy a Yorkshire Tale of Home Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shoddy a Yorkshire Tale of Home, Vol. 1 of 3 Was only a keen man Of business, or even a sharp practitioner, with as much heart as the Often quoted paving-stone; and if, as we have the authority Of antiquity for believing, the bowels are the dwelling-place for the tender sentiments of sympathy and compassion, that in his case either the property was not tenantable, or the occupants had been removed by some writ Of ejectment. In both cases I draw this inference, that for a faithful portrait, or correct estimate of character, we should avoid painting our subject in black, and contemplating it only when so depicted, as a good many lights may be obscured by the heavy colour ing, which would otherwise give much life and point to various dimples and curves, and without which the picture is imperfect. Thus, if those keen Observers of human nature referred to could have seen the astute Old lawyer in his garden before breakfast, on a fine spring morning, and with hoe or rake in hand grubbing up the weeds, or re moving the stones, wearing a straw hat and an Old shooting-jacket, and sometimes in the evening with the addition of a long clay pipe, they would scarcely have believed him to be identical with the staid gentleman who, in his suit of black and white neckcloth, left his gate at precisely nine o'clock to catch the omnibus that should take him to town. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wrayford's Ward, and Other Tales, Vol. 1 of 3 There, and when his strength returned he had been glad to get back to his Cornish home. It had been his father's home before him, and here he could study in peace, with nothing more to disturb him than the wash of the sea against the rocks in the Cove, a hundred feet below him, and not a hundred yards away. His father had died poor, and there did not seem any probability of Abel vvrayford becoming a rich man. He was fond of experiments, and the money which he earned in writing a treatise, or expound ing a theory for the Scientific Register, was sure to be spent in new apparatus, or in following out a new idea - very often a fallacious one, despite his cleverness. Had it not been for his ward, he would have even drifted into debt, after the fashion of such thoughtless, dreamy beings as be all the world over; but she ruled his house and home, and was a practical young woman in her way.
