Book Colonial Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book Colonial Children Classic Reprint written by Albert Bushnell Hart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Children Reading aloud with taste and expression is only part of the school training. Children must learn to read both to and for themselves; to get the sense by the appeal of the printed page to the eye, as well as of the spoken words to the ear. That children do not acquire this power generally in the primary and grammar schools is known to secondary school teach ers; repeatedly. In my high school classes I have found that reading twenty pages of a comparatively easy history or even of a novel, was a time-taking task without definite results in the way of securing the ideas. Since this power cannot be acquired without years of training, a beginning should be made in the elementary schools. There is no doubt that many of these stories would be most profitable and engrossing seat work, a means of relaxation, which would not involve mischief making. Book Letters From Colonial Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters From Colonial Children Classic Reprint written by Eva March Tappan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Colonial Children These letters are planned to give an idea of how life in some of the representative American colonies might have seemed to children, not necessarily the children of 1607 or 1733, as it may be, for, save in the case of one or two colonies, material for such precision of delineation is utterly lacking, but to the child mind rather than the adult mind. I have aimed at historical accuracy except in regard to the language employed. To sprinkle the pages with seventeenth-century phrases would have been a simple matter; but to reproduce with any degree of verisimilitude the familiar parlance of the children of three centuries ago would have been impossible. It seemed wiser, therefore, to trust to modern English and not attempt what must at best have been only an unsatisfactory imitation. Download or read book Child Life in Colonial Days Classic Reprint written by Alice Morse Earle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life in Colonial Days It is my hope that children as well as grown folk will find in these pages much to interest them in the accounts of the llfe of children of olden times. I have had this end constantly in my mind, though I have made no attempt, nor had 1 any intent, to write in a style for the perusal of children; for I have not found that intelligent children care much 'or long for such hooks, except in the very rare cases of the few great hooks that have heen written for children, and which are loved and read as much hy the old as hy the young. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Great Americans: For Little Americans The primary aim of this book is to furnish the little learner reading matter that will excite his attention and give him pleasure, and thus make lighter the difficult task of learning to read. The ruggedness of this task has often been increased by the use of disconnected sentences, or lessons as dry and uninteresting as finger exercises on the piano. It is a sign of promise that the demand for reading matter of interest to the child has come from teachers. I have endeavored to meet this requirement in the following stories. As far as possible the words chosen have been such as are not difficult to the little reader, either from their length or their unfamiliarity. The sentences and paragraphs are short. Learning to read is like climbing a steep hill, and it is a great relief to the panting child to find frequent breathing places. It is one of the purposes of these stories to make the mind of the pupil familiar with some of the leading figures in the history of our country by means of personal anecdote. Some of the stories are those that every American child ought to know, because they have become a kind of national folklore. Such, for example, are "Putnam and the Wolf" and the story of "Franklin's Whistle." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Story of the Thirteen Colonies Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Thirteen Colonies Classic Reprint written by Hélène Adeline Guerber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Thirteen Colonies This book is intended as an historical reader, an elementary text-book in the history of our country, or as an introduction or supplement to any of the excellent text-books on the history of the United States now in use. The aim has been not only to interest children in the great men of their own country, but to stimulate them to the cultiva tion of the lofty virtues of which they read, and to instil within their hearts a deep love for their native land. All the main facts in our early history have been given as sim ply and vividly as possible, and the lessons of patriotism, truth fulness, courage, patience, honesty, and industry taught by the lives of our principal heroes are carefully enforced. Great pains have also been taken to relate all the well-known anecdotes and quote the famous speeches which are so frequently alluded to in our current literature. Although this book ends with the Revolutionary War, the story of our country is continued on the same lines in a companion volume entitled The Story of the Great Republic; yet each book is independent of the other and can be used separately. So simply worded as to be easily intelligible to average children of ten or twelve years of age, the text is further arranged in short paragraphs, to facilitate its use as a reader in large classes.
