Book Stories of Bird Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Bird Life Classic Reprint written by T. Gilbert Pearson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Bird Life MY purpose in writing these stories and sketches of birds has been that I might make others acquainted with the ways of some of the wild birds which have been of so much interest to me. Should they serve to give the reader a little more intimate ao quaintance with our feathered neighbors of the field and woodland, my main object will have been accomplished. These stories are not fanciful, but are true to bird life. The Arredondo Sparrow Hawk, ruffle-breast and Socrates were partien lar birds well known to others as to me. In the case of the Bob white family, and Bib-neck, the Plover, I have combined into the lives of a few birds incidents I have known to occur to many. The accounts of Visits to birds' nests, bird colonies and the like are given as they occurred. In the Appendixes some suggestions are offered to the student and the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Stories From Burroughs: Sketches of Bird Life Taken From the Works of John Burroughs John Burroughs's first book, "Wake-Robin," contained a chapter entitled "The Invitation." It was an invitation to the study of birds. He has reiterated it, implicitly if not explicitly, in most of the books he has published since then, and many of his readers have joyfully accepted it. Indeed, such an invitation from Mr. Burroughs is the best possible introduction to the birds of our Northeastern States, and it is likewise an introduction to some very good reading. To convey this invitation to a wider circle of young readers the most interesting bird stories in Mr. Burroughs's books have been gathered into a single volume. A chapter is given to each species of bird, and the chapters are arranged in a sort of chronological order, according to the time of the bird's arrival in the spring, the nesting time, or the season when for some other reason the species is particularly conspicuous. In taking the stories out of their original setting a few slight verbal alterations have been necessary here and there, but these have been made either by Mr. Burroughs himself or with his approval. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bits of Bird Life: Selections From the Youth's Companion Near my study there used to stand several Old apple-trees that bore fair crops of apples, but better crops Of birds. Every year these Old trees were the scenes Of bird incidents and bird histories that were a source Of much interest and amusement. Young trees may be the best for apples, but Old trees are sure to bear the most birds. If they are very decrepit, and full of dead and hollow branches, they will bear birds in Winter as well as summer. The downy woodpecker wants no better place than the brittle, dozy trunk Of an apple-tree in which to excavate his winter home. My Old apple-trees are all down but one, and this one is probably an octogenarian, and I am afraid cannot stand it another winter. Its body is a mere shell not much over one inch thick, the heart and main interior structure having turned to black mold long ago. An Old tree, unlike an Old person, as long as it lives at all, always has a young streak, or rather ring, in it. It wears a girdle Of perpetual youth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Life Stories, Vol. 1: Compiled From the Writings of Audubon, Bend Nuttall, and Wilson HE four writers from whom the chapters in these Bird Life Stories have been drawn are especially notable for the absorb ing interest with which they pursued the study of birds. They were all original investigators, exploring the trackless wilderness in their search for knowledge. Especially was this true of Audubon and Wilson, who laid the foundations of the science of ornithology in America, but it was also true to a less extent of Nuttall and Bendire. This interest which our authors brought to their work has of course been communicated to their writings, so that their accounts of our birds are on the whole the most interesting that have ever been published. In the books of this series I have tried to select for each of the chosen birds that account which seemed the best. I have modified the language and punctuation only so far as was necessary to shorten some sentences, and to render clear the meaning of others. Occasion ally I have omitted parts which had no special modern interest or which our later\knowledge has shown to be incorrect. In this work of revision, as well as in the preparation of the additional notes, I have had the assistance of Mr. Ralph Hoficmann, lecturer on ornithology for the Massackusetts Audubon Society, and Dr. Ned Dearborn of the Field Columbia Museum, Chicago, both expert ornithologists who are thoroughly conversant with the most recent developments of the science. The specimens shown in the colored plates were collected and mounted by Doctor. Dearborn expressly for this work, and the colored plates themselves have been made under his supervision. To both of these gentlemen I am glad to express my hearty thanks, as well as to the officers of the Smithsonian Institution, for permission to use such of the writings of the late Major Bendire as I desired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird-Life To compress the "Story of Bird-Life" within the limits of the present little work has been no easy task. The object aimed at has been to present the main features of bird-life in a general way. Hence it is hoped this volume may prove of interest to bird-lovers the world over, not because it contains information about the birds of any particular neighbourhood or country; but rather, because it serves as a guide to what should be looked for, and recorded, of the life-history of birds wherever they may be met with. Even dwellers in the sordid city have some material upon which they may exercise their powers of observation. Since there are no less than 13,000 known species of birds, it would have been courting failure, and wearisome in the extreme, to deal with individuals in detail! The present work then is a skeleton picture, which each can fill up as he may for himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
