Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crusoe's Island: A Bird-Hunter's Story These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching. The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage. Book The Birds of Long Island Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Birds of Long Island Classic Reprint written by J. P. Giraud and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Long Island The great expense attending works embellished with costly engravings, as well as the strictly scientific character of most works treating of Natural History, limits such subjects comparatively to the few. Frequent complaints of this nature have induced me to offer the present volume, with a view of placing within the reach of the "gunners," the means of becoming more thoroughly acquainted with the birds frequenting Long Island. The additions all departments of Natural History are continually receiving, is evidence, that with however much zeal and energy the different branches have been pursued, and notwithstanding the praiseworthy exertions bestowed by those who have distinguished themselves in their various pursuits, still we find their labors are not so far complete as to leave nothing for their successors. While the Botanist, Mineralogist, Entomologist, and Conchologist are enriching their cabinets, the Ornithologist is finding in our vast territory undescribed species. The "Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia," (1841, ) contains an article giving the views of Dr. Bachman, relative to the course our Naturalists should pursue in the publication of American species viz. that all north of the Tropic of Cancer twenty-three and a half degrees, should be called North America - the Tropics, Tropical or Central America - and south of the Tropic of Capricorn, South America." The large scope which our Zoology embraces, deters many persons from making collections, as they despair ever being able to complete them. Book The Story of a Bird Lover Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of a Bird Lover Classic Reprint written by William Earl Dodge Scott and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a Bird Lover It is not merely the fact that the author of this book is recognized by ornithologists as one of the foremost experts in America as regards the life and habits of birds that has led the publishers to urge him to write this biography of a bird lover. Neither is it chiefly the fact that his favorite study has led him into many not well-known parts of the country, where his experiences, personal and scientific, have been curious and interesting. It is rather because Mr. Scott in quite an unusual, perhaps even unique, degree has brought the life of birds nearer to the life of man - has established, so to speak, personal relationships with the whole bird kingdom. A visit to Princeton, where Mr. Scott occupies the post of Curator of the Department of Ornithology in the University, and a few hours spent with his remarkable collection of live birds, would show clearly what is meant. Here, in a "laboratory" forming part of his own house, are in six rooms about five hundred live birds, native and foreign. No small part of the author's time and all the time of an assistant are spent in caring for these birds and in studying them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mamma's Stories About Birds The Eagle is often called the King of Birds, and therefore it is of him that we ought to speak first. Very likely you have often seen eagles in the Zoological Gardens, and, if so, you know what noble looking birds they are. But they seem very sad in their prison-houses, to which no kindness can ever attach them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little White Bird: Or Adventures in Kensington Gardens Sometimes the little boy who calls me father brings me an invitation from his mother: "I shall be so pleased if you will come and see me," and I always reply in some such words as these: "Dear madam, I decline." And if David asks why I decline, I explain that it is because I have no desire to meet the woman. "Come this time, father," he urged lately, "for it is her birthday, and she is twenty-six," which is so great an age to David, that I think he fears she cannot last much longer. "Twenty-six, is she, David?" I replied. "Tell her I said she looks more." I had my delicious dream that night. Download or read book A Bird of Passage Classic Reprint written by B. M. Croker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bird of Passage "Droops the heavy-blossom'd bower; hangs the heavy-fruited tree; Summer isles of Eden lying in dark purple spheres of sea." Locksley Hall. Few travellers penetrate to the Andamans, unless it be an enthusiastic astronomer to witness a rare comet, or an enterprising professor, who happens to be fired with a desire to study the language and the skulls of the aborigines. These islands are as yet sacred from the foot of the globe-trotter, Cook's tourists ignore them, and they lie in serene semi-savage seclusion, in the midst of the Indian Ocean, dimly known to the great outer world as the chief Indian convict settlement, and the scene of Lord Mayo's murder in 1872. The inland portions of the great and lesser Andamans have been but cursorily explored, (those who have made the attempt, having learnt by tragic experience that the inhabitants were addicted to cannibalism); but outlying islets, and fringes of the coast, have been opened up by the Indian Government, and appropriated for the benefit of thousands of convicts (chiefly lifers), who are annually poured into Port Blair - from Galle to the Kyber, from Aden to the borders of China, the cry is still they come!
