Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Great Americans: For Little Americans The primary aim of this book is to furnish the little learner reading matter that will excite his attention and give him pleasure, and thus make lighter the difficult task of learning to read. The ruggedness of this task has often been increased by the use of disconnected sentences, or lessons as dry and uninteresting as finger exercises on the piano. It is a sign of promise that the demand for reading matter of interest to the child has come from teachers. I have endeavored to meet this requirement in the following stories. As far as possible the words chosen have been such as are not difficult to the little reader, either from their length or their unfamiliarity. The sentences and paragraphs are short. Learning to read is like climbing a steep hill, and it is a great relief to the panting child to find frequent breathing places. It is one of the purposes of these stories to make the mind of the pupil familiar with some of the leading figures in the history of our country by means of personal anecdote. Some of the stories are those that every American child ought to know, because they have become a kind of national folklore. Such, for example, are "Putnam and the Wolf" and the story of "Franklin's Whistle." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of American Discoverers for Little Americans The study of history is not ordinarily enjoyed by children. This is perhaps due to the fact that the text-book employed is dull, or that the subject is not of interest to the teacher presenting it, or to the fact that the pupil's previous experience with the primary grade history stories has not been such as to create any desire for fuller knowledge of the subject. Now and then a girl or a boy is found to whom the study appeals, who sees the plan of action, who delights in the carrying out of large and small designs, to whom accidents have their meanings. Such a pupil has a mind for more than dry facts. He seizes upon the romance of the situation, whether it be in the case of Columbus with his handful of men crossing an unknown sea, or in the case of the last political campaign. It is in the hope of helping more minds to attain to this condition that these stories have been written. The discoverers and explorers of the Western Hemisphere have, in their adventures, given us a fair field from which to glean stories wonderful enough to hold the attention of young children. The swords and helmets of these men shine as brightly as those of even fairy prince-lings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folks' Book of American Explorers It has always seemed to me that the narratives of the early discoverers and explorers of the American coast were as interesting as "Robinson Crusoe," and were, indeed, very much like it. This has led me to make a series of extracts from these narratives, selecting what appeared to me the most interesting parts, and altering only the spelling. The grammar is not always correct; but it would be impossible to alter that without changing the style of writing too much: so it has not been changed at all. Wherever it has seemed necessary, I have put a word of my own in brackets [thus]; but all else is the very language of the old writers, or their translators. Whenever any thing has been omitted, great or small, the place is marked by dots... Some of the hardest words have been explained by footnotes. One great thing which I have wished my readers to learn is the charm of an original narrative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History for Little Folks This little volume is intended to be a supplementary reading-book on American history for use in the third grade of our public schools, and for other boys and girls from ten to twelve years of age. A few of the more dramatic and picturesque events in the history of our country are here presented in a simple and easy style. They have much of human interest, and are full of action. Professor Hinsdale, in his "How to Study and Teach History," well says that a bit of romance, poetry, anecdote, or story will often throw more light on a historical situation or let you deeper into a man's heart and life than a page of careful analysis or a laborious description. These stories rest on a historical basis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
