Book Eternity and Other Stories

Book excerpt: Here are seven stories from a master of the art. Viktor Chemayev is the Philip Marlowe of Russian detectives, a sad-eyed, heavy drinking romantic who refuses to stay beat. In the title novella of this extraordinary collection, he goes head-to-head with an Irish assassin in the depths of a Moscow nightclub in an attempt to win back his true love, who has been sold to the Beelzebub-like king of the Moscow underworld... Lucius Shepard is known for his dark, unpredictable vision, and in this assemblage of some of his best writing he takes us from Moscow to Africa; from the mountains of Iraq, where Specialist Charlie N. Wilson encounters a very different sort of enemy, to Central America, where a bloody-handed colonel meets his doom via lizards. In these seven tales Shepard's imagination spans the globe and, like an American Gabriel Garcia Marquez, refuses to be restricted by mere reality.

Book A Very Brief History of Eternity

Download or read book A Very Brief History of Eternity written by Carlos Eire and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-12 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Waiting for Snow in Havana, a brilliant cultural history of the idea of eternity What is eternity? Is it anything other than a purely abstract concept, totally unrelated to our lives? A mere hope? A frightfully uncertain horizon? Or is it a certainty, shared by priest and scientist alike, and an essential element in all human relations? In A Very Brief History of Eternity, Carlos Eire, the historian and National Book Award–winning author of Waiting for Snow in Havana, has written a brilliant history of eternity in Western culture. Tracing the idea from ancient times to the present, Eire examines the rise and fall of five different conceptions of eternity, exploring how they developed and how they have helped shape individual and collective self-understanding. A book about lived beliefs and their relationship to social and political realities, A Very Brief History of Eternity is also about unbelief, and the tangled and often rancorous relation between faith and reason. Its subject is the largest subject of all, one that has taxed minds great and small for centuries, and will forever be of human interest, intellectually, spiritually, and viscerally.

MURDER ON TAP With Chicago winters in the rearview mirror, Chloe Jackson is making good on a promise: help her late friend’s grandmother run the Sea Glass Saloon in the Florida Panhandle. To Chloe’s surprise, feisty Vivi Slidell isn’t the frail retiree Chloe expects. Nor is Emerald Cove. It’s less a sleepy fishing village than a panhandle hotspot overrun with land developers and tourists. But it’s a Sea Glass regular who’s mysteriously crossed the cranky Vivi. When their bitter argument comes to a head and he’s found dead behind the bar, guess who’s the number one suspect? In trying to clear Vivi’s name, Chloe discovers the old woman isn’t the only one in Emerald Cove with secrets. Under the laidback attitude, sparkling white beaches, and small town ways something terrible is brewing. And the sure way a killer can keep those secrets bottled up is to finish off one murder with a double shot: aimed at Chloe and Vivi. “An incredibly enjoyable book.” —Mystery Scene on Sell Low, Sweet Harriet

Then, a terrible accident brings their journey to an abrupt climax!

He continued work on The Mirror of Eternity. Drinking to excess, experimenting with drugs, he eventually realised what he wanted the Mirror of Eternity to be. It could be of no value to commercial sponsors or to respectable scientists like his father. Indeed its only advantage was that it worked. He appeared in all of the Mirror of Eternity books. Wolf-Dietrich von Raitenau It was in Salt Wars that Wolf-Dietrich decided to take Xavier under his wing. Who was under who's wing has been a matter for debate. While Xavier was not used to the dreamscape and Wolf-Dietrich was able to teach him a lot, Wolf-Dietrich was not familiar with the modern world and had a lot to learn too. Wolf-Dietrich is in three of the Mirror of Eternity books Tilly Tilly was Xavier's girlfriend in Salt Wars and his wife in The Miranda Revolution. She is just the balance that Wolf-Dietrich and Xavier need. They will not allow themselves to be distracted from the big political picture. Tilly never takes her eyes off the suffering of the poor. She identifies herself as "Sister Lam". She appears in three of the Mirror of Eternity books. Miranda When the Dictator's wife was killed, he created a group of women who were as similar to her as plastic surgery and cosmetics could make them. Inside the palace they were called "The Mirandas". Outside they were called "Miranda" and there was a cult of Miranda and her reputed ability to "stay the hand of the tyrant". Book The Diffused Story of the Footwashing in John 13

Download or read book The Diffused Story of the Footwashing in John 13 written by Yanrong Chen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Catholic missionaries of the early modern period arrived in mainland China in 1582, but the first Catholic Bible did not appear until 1968, long after Protestant missionaries already had published several versions. The mystery behind the four-hundred-year gap is not a why question but instead involves many how questions—primarily, how did communication of the Bible take place in the Chinese context without a written text in the Chinese language? This book uncovers narrative forms of biblical stories and explores the ways they were delivered to Chinese audiences. Relying on textual evidence, it presents a diversified exploration of a specific biblical story from the Latin Vulgate Bible—the footwashing in John 13—and its translation into various Chinese texts. In different religious milieus, the biblical narrative provided Chinese audiences a core source of faith, connected them with the most commonly accepted beliefs, and fostered their religiosity across communities in China from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. The interdisciplinary approach adopted herein sheds new light on the history of the Bible in China and paves the way for further studies on the abundance of Chinese biblical stories and texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year 11 million people trek to the Louvre to gawk at the Mona Lisa. Many visitors clutch guide books in hand describing the painting. For some, it’s the experience of a lifetime, one they’ll talk about with friends and family for decades. Yet some modern researchers say that the vast majority of people will never recognize the hidden messages in this painting. That’s because those hidden messages are subliminal. Buried below the threshold of conscious awareness, Da Vinci used techniques people never notice. Not only don’t people know what they’re seeing, they would be shocked to find out. A surprisingly large number of famous paintings fall into the same category. That is, they employ subliminal techniques to enhance the effectiveness of the work or to encode messages within portraits and landscapes. No book, however, has ever attempted to provide an overview of the technical sophistication and arcane methods that artists worldwide have used to conceal secret meaning in their work. Every Picture Hides a Story is the first book to expose the subliminal content in the world’s greatest paintings. Titillating, subversive, and building on the groundbreaking work of pioneers of art criticism, this book will enable readers to view art masterpieces with greater understanding. And their enjoyment of these works will be exponentially enhanced. This full-color book contains 86 images of the paintings and their details.

From the Garden of Eden to twenty-first-century cityscapes, we glimpse fragments in the lives of those who have been overlooked by traditional histories: the artists, the servants, the gods and the visionaries, the black slaves who built the White House, and the women who were bartered for dynastic ends
