This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 929 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don Quixote, fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (Spanish: El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha), is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. It follows the adventures of Alonso Quijano, an hidalgo who reads so many chivalric novels that he decides to set out to revive chivalry, under the name Don Quixote. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthly wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood. Don Quixote is met by the world as it is, initiating such themes as intertextuality, realism, metatheatre, and literary representation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures of Don Quixote To appreciate Don Quixote, we have no need for lengthy introductions. To understand him, read, and appreciation will come. Cervantes wished to, reveal in their true light, the farcical, extravagant, nonsensical Libros ale Caballeria (books on knight-errantry), which put forth a false ideal, ignoring the true chivalry of a true knight, and by this false ideal did great harm in Spain. The result was Don Quixote, which is at the same time a novel, a satire, a history and a picture of Spanish life. Do not thinkthat Cer vantes mocked the great' ideals of chivalry. He loved truth, uprightness and courage - his own career provesw tihs - but he wished to Show that valour, generosity, hope and justice were the bases of chivalric life. Don Quixote has been thought to be mad, but if mad ness consists in going through the world seeking to combat ignorance, cruelty, superstition and roguery, we must confess that he was not sane, and saw life in a mirage of the vicious books on chivalry. Sancho Panza is a very human personage. He is a peasant, ignorant but shrewd, who accompanies a master keen to fight injustice, knavery, and to pro tect the poor and the humble, but who, with a greater knowledge of mankind, tries to protect him from those self-seekers who might impose upon his good nature and his eagerness to help the oppressed. Book excerpt: James Montgomery's new translation of Don Quixote is the fourth already in the twenty-first century, and it stands with the best of them. It pays particular attention to what may be the hardest aspect of Cervantes's novel to render into English: the humorous passages, particularly those that feature a comic and original use of language. Cervantes would be proud. --Howard Mancing, Professor of Spanish, Purdue University and Vice President, Cervantes Society of America

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra: The Author of Don Quixote Miguel de Cervantes-Saavedra, the author of Don Quixote, was born at Alcala de Henares, the ancient Complutum, a small town in the province of New Castile, in 1547. The day of his birth is not known, but as he was baptized on the 9 th of October, it is conjectured from his Christian name that he was born on Saint Michaelmas day preceding. The place of his nativity also remained in doubt until the year 1748, when Don Juan de Yriarte found in the Royal Library of Madrid a manuscript entitled La Verdadera Patria de Miguel de Cervantes, written by the learned Benedictine Martin Sarmiento. Till then seven cities, Madrid, Seville, Lucena, Toledo, Esquivias, Alcazar de San Juan, and Consuegra, had contended for the honor of being his birthplace, although in the Topography of Algiers, by Father Hsedo, published in 1612, mention was made of Cervantes as a native of Alcala de Henares, and the genealogist Mendez de Silva, in his tract on Nliho Alfonso, published in 1648, had also spoken of him as a noble Castilian gentleman of the same town. All doubts on the subject, their long ignorance as to which is one of the many proofs of the carelessness with which the Spaniards have treasured what belongs to the memory of their illustrious countrymen, were finally resolved by the discovery of the petition for an inquiry into his conduct at. Algiers addressed by Cervantes to the government in 1580. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Don Quixote In one scene a young man determines to get food at any risk for his mistress. He penetrates into the enemy's camp, receives his death wound, but is able to crawl back and give the girl the bread saturated with his blood. In another a starving Child sucks blood instead of milk from the breast of its starving mother; and a poor wretch, who has once endured the agonies of death, is brought back again to life by a magician. No doubt such scenes tend to excite some compassion for suffering, but this feeling is overwhelmed by the excessive passion of hate which is awakened against the enemies who caused all this. Unquestionably', if (as it is asserted) this play was performed during the siege of Saragosa, it must have kindled a great patriotic enthusiasm. But the effects of such representations were not always so good. The mimic sufferings of the stage prepared a nation to witness with pleasure the more terrible realities of the auto-dafe'. In the greatness of the theme, and the introduction of allegorical characters in this play, there is undoubtedly a resemblance to the Greek model, and of the poetry of this composition no less a critic than Schlegel speaks in terms of enthusiastic praise.
