We still sometimes call Europe the Old, and America the New World, but the ease with which we can send news, or travel from one to the other, prevents our thinking much of the great distance between them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Canada There is something radically wrong when so many students in our schools dislike Canadian history. There is sufficient romantic interest in the story of our nation to make such a state of affairs unwarrantable. The most, important grades of our schools have suffered the most. Less than a quarter of our Canadian students reach the high school. Whatever interest, therefore, in Canadian history the rest are to carry into private life must be kindled before the end of Grade VIII. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Canadian People The aim of this book is to tell the story of our country simply, yet without sacrificing historical con tent to simplicity. The story is one of colonisation. It tells of failure and success; of French failure through the folly of absolutism, monopoly, and feudalism; of British success through the wisdom of self-government, freedom, and equality. Canada's past is richly stored with those picturesque incidents which make history fascinating as well as instructive. From the blunders of the French crown and the greed of chartered com panics, the reader turns with pleasure to the deeds of martial governors, devoted missionaries, and freedom loving coure'urs de while, later on, his mind finds relief from the serious problems of autonomy and union in the simple scenes of pioneer life, and in the adven tures of explorer or fur-trader of the West, where the romance of earlier days still lives. Many leading writers of Canada have promised assistance for the present series, and the names of those who are contributing to the first number should be a guarantee of what may be expected in the future. Book Canadian History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Canadian History Classic Reprint written by James L. Hughes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian History This little work has been prepared at the request of Rev. Dr. Vincent, President of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, for publication in New York, and is issued by the Canadian publisher in response to a demand for an aid in reviewing and preparing for examinations. It is not intended to fill the place of an exhaustive treatise on the subject, but it contains in systematic order the facts to be remembered by students. Teachers should read all the good books on the subject; so should their pupils after they leave school. They have not time to do so during school life. Pupils and students will find that, by the aid of this book, they can very readily recall the facts of Canadian History. Attention is directed to the topical arrangement of the events. They are not given in Diary or Day-book order, but are classified under appropriate headings. This will enable the student to learn them more intelligently as well as more easily. The Students' Review Outlines form an important feature of the book. By means of them pupils can themselves test their acquaintance with the subject. These outlines will be of special value to those who are studying without a teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Pageant of Canadian History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pageant of Canadian History Classic Reprint written by Anne Merriman Peck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pageant of Canadian History The unconventional pattern of this book requires some ex planation for readers who expect to find the historical narrative proceeding chronologically from year to year. I have seen the vigorous history of Canada in big sweeps of movement; the dramatic period of French exploration and the life of New France; the pursuit of fur which carried explorers and traders all the way to the Pacific; the growth of a few small British colonies into the Dominion of Canada; tllen the winning of the west and the advance to modern nationhood. This method in volves some shuffling back and forth in time, but it makes clear the motive power of ideas and ambitions that urged the people on from one period to another of their history. The book is as the title indicates, a pageant, a story of the land and people, rather than a historian's study. It has been written for my fel low Americans, to pass on my discovery of the vivid history of our northern neighbors and my admiration for them. The book is also offered to Canadians in the hope that they will accept this interpretation of their story by an enthusiastic friend across the border. I wish to express my appreciation to many Canadi ans of town and country who welcomed me with so much friendliness; to librarians, and to officers of 'a variety of institu tions who courteously gave their time and interest to help me with information. Download or read book Canada and the Canadian Question Classic Reprint written by Goldwin Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and the Canadian Question Where the subject is so complex and so disjointed, to devise a satisfactory arrangement is not easy. Writers and readers of the history of the Dominion too well know how wanting it is in unity. For the special purpose of this work, which is neither elaborate description nor detailed history, but the presentation of a case and of a problem, it seemed best first, briefly to delineate the Provinces, which are the factors of the case, then to sketch their political history, leading up to Confederation, then to give an account of the Confederation itself, with its political sequel, up to the present time, and finally to propound the problem. The general reader, if any one answering to that description ever takes up this work, may skip the chapter on the Federal polity, the subject of which to the reader specially interested in Colonial institutions will probably seem the most important of all. To impart anything like liveliness to a discussion of the British North America Act one must have the touch of Voltaire. Book Britannia History Reader Vol 1

Download or read book Britannia History Reader Vol 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Britannia History Reader, Vol. 1: Stories From Canadian and British History The aim of the book is to present in an informal and concrete way the story of our race. It is intends-1' for the use of pupils in Form III of the Public Schools. Teachers and mature readers will recognize that many facts and considerations of great importance and or' deep significance to more advanced students must be omitted from a book of this kind. At the same time historical importance, not picturesqueness, has guided both author and Iitor in the selection of facts. For there are involved two pedagogical principles that the teacher would do well to keep in mind, that the interest of the child should be awakened and held, and that when the survey of the field he finished the facts and names remembered be the ones worth remembering. There are many picturesque incidents that form admirable bases for instructive anecdote. But history is not made up solely of instructive and picturesque anecdotes, and unless the course in the third grade paves a solid way for the can that follows in the fourth it has failed to answer its purpose. So although many things of importance have not been included in this book, yet on the other hand nothing has consciously been introduced that has not a real bearing on the great controlling events and persons of British history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Canadian Books in the Press This is a book for which, on the whole, students of Canadian history have cause to be grateful. In merely military history, it is difficult to have too much detail if only the details are methodically arranged or never snfi'er ed to become the vehicles of rhetoric or picturesque writ ing. Here and after all, considering the subject, this is the root of the matter the book is deserving of all praise. Stage by stage the progress of the Siege unfolds itself with s fulness which the scale of Parkman's work tendend impossible and with a precision to which he did not always attain. Ou one important point, indad, the writers do not seem to as to have made good their point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
