Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Animal Story Book Children who have read our Fairy Books may have noticed that there are not so very many fairies in the stories after all. The most common eharacters are birds, beasts, and fishes, who talk and act like Christians. The reason of this is that the first peo ple who told the stories were not very clever, or, if they were clever, they had never been taught to read and write, or to distinguish between Vegetable, Ani mal, and Mineral. They took it that all things were 'much of a muchness: they were not proud, and held that beast and bird could talk like themselves, only, of course, in a different language. Book Nature Stories for Young Readers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Stories for Young Readers: Animal Life The subjects of this series of lessons are mainly such insects or other animals as the children may observe for themselves. The lessons aim to give illustrations of some of the varied means of self-protection employed by animals; their methods of home-building and of caring for their young; the transformations they undergo; the adaptability to their surroundings as shown by their coverings and the tools with which the various animals are provided. The purpose in attempting to bring these thoughts to the youngest readers is manifold. It is hoped that such readers may become interested, while children, in the abundant life about them, and that when this interest is gratified by learning of the wonderful lives and habits of these little people, a respect for all life may be inculcated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Tales: From the Animal World Nobody likes to be always learning something. Even Solomon was fain to say at the end, "And much study is a weariness to the flesh." Beef and whole-wheat bread are, undoubtedly, muscle-builders, but a delicate pudding, or nuts and raisins, or an ice-cream are very pleasant at the end of a dinner, and without them we feel defrauded of something that is the cherished heritage of civilized man. Perhaps education has no better purpose than to create a hunger for knowledge and an absorbing desire to learn; but do you, my grown-up reader, ever feel in such mood that philosophy and abstruse poetry and logic pall upon your intellectual taste? Do you sometimes feel in such mood that only a fascinating monthly magazine or an absorbing short story is the measure of your receptive powers? Everybody must; everybody does; and children more than any others. Children do grow, sometimes, just a little tired of plumule and radicle, and vertical lines, and Charles and Mary Lamb; while the teacher and the mother, finding that so much time is needed to explain and illustrate, often feel that the child's reading would be far better if he read much more and they explained much less. Book Nature Stories for Youngest Readers

Download or read book Nature Stories for Youngest Readers written by Anna Chase Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Stories for Youngest Readers: Animals Tame and Wild I have tried to interest the child in the animal by leading him to observe some things for himself, and also have told him some things that are important for him to know. I have also tried, when it was possible, to correlate number and color. The sentences are simple and short and easily grasped by even the youngest readers. When it is possible, it would be well to have stuffed specimens of the different animals for the children to see, and encourage their going to the menagerie or to the country to see the larger animals for themselves. Download or read book The Wonders of Animal Ingenuity Classic Reprint written by H. Coupin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonders of Animal Ingenuity N the pleasant days when we have not long begun to look on a wonderful world peopled with beings great and small all living their busy lives after their own fashion, most of us are in some respects nearer to understanding the ways of the myriad creatures which share the earth with us than we have ever the good fortune to be in later years. Before a sparrow becomes for us only a sparrow, or we have been taught to associate the word horrid with a score of interesting and often beautiful little animals which we meet day by day, the things that happen in animal-land are not passed over with unseeing eyes; the earth is filled with romance, and we live in a true fairyland. From a few fortunate ones the spell is never lifted; for them its fascination grows stronger with time, and the story becomes constantly more engrossing, for it is one whose secret, though ever unfolding, can never be wholly revealed. Book Stories About Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories About Animals Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-04 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories About Animals Before we can judge of his freedom of limb and native grace; in speed, literally out-strip ping the wind. In Britain, the breed of horses is as mixed and various as its inhab itants. The frequent introduction of foreign horses has given us a variety that no other country can boast of; and the English horse is esteemed above all others. The wild horse is active, and of a beautiful shape, but he is not so large as the tame horse. In his native state, he 18 so swift, that no other animal can contend with him in the chase. When the natives wish to take him, they make traps which are covered over in the ground, and catch him by the feet; the hunters then come and secure him. The wild horse is the only animal that can keep pace with the ostrich, which in its flight has both the assistance of legs and wings. The common cart horse, although slow in his movements, is useful to the farmer in tilling the ground; and a horse that is so useful to his master, and is of so much benefit to mankind, deserves a place next to man; and next to him, the welfare of the horse should engage our attention. The horse principally subsists on vegetables, and will live to the age of twenty or thirty years.blood. The largest tigers are found in Africa, and sometimes measure nearly five feet in height, and ten in length. The tiger is re markable for his great strength; he will easily carry off a horse or buffalo by throwing the carcass over his shoulder, and will thus bound away to his lair.
