Book For the Children s Hour Classic Reprint

Download or read book For the Children s Hour Classic Reprint written by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For the Children's Hour In nearly every case it has been found necessary to adapt the stories to the immediate use of the story teller, whether kindergartner or mother. They have been shortened, and only such salient facts retained as will result in clear mental concepts, and make the stories easily told without undue taxing of the child's attention. A large place has been given to the fanciful tale, which has a direct educational value in the training of the imagination; and the accumulative repetition story, which develops the child's sense of humor, and appeals to his instinctive love of rhyme and jingle. But this day he sadly forgot himself; and now see, children, how one bad act leads to another. He told his mother, that when coming from school, he saw a boy who had fallen and hurt himself very much; and that he stood a good while looking at him. His mother believed him; for as I have told you, he generally spoke the truth. But she said that he ought not to have stopped on the road. Download or read book Stories to Tell the Littlest Ones Classic Reprint written by Sara Cone Bryant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories to Tell the Littlest Ones Gradually other loves have taken their place in the home-story world, and I have told my boy and girl many tales of many kinds, true, fairy, and foolish, as they call humorous stories, but they still love the one that begins with Peter Rabbit. Once in a while, in the long series Of days, some happy inspiration has given me a better thought than usual, and a real story has popped out of my mouth in place of the mediocre inventions of habit. These few real stories have been retold by request of the original audience, and told again to larger audiences many times. It has seemed to me that the best of them might prove of value to other teach ers and mothers of very, little children, for the demand is continuous, and the sup ply of material suitable for such tiny hearers is exceedingly small. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laughing Lion: And Other Stories These stories are real stories; told, not written; told to children who come to the Children's Art Centre, 36 Rutland Street, Boston, and find there things of beauty, gathered by love for their delight. It is difficult to avoid being lectured in Bos ton. Education makes of young lives a dreary waste, and Beauty, a Cinderella among her instructive sisters, save as she may teach something, shyly hides her head. The Children's Art Centre is what its name implies - there Beauty may whisper her message - there the child may listen to her undistracted by the voice of the interpreter. Her message is different to each little visitor; but always it is a message of beauty, told in its own way. He was brave and true and gentle, and he loved all that was beautiful and good. Edmund Spenser wrote many poems, and the most beautiful of all is the one called 'the Faerie Queen.' He loved so dearly all things that are beautiful and all things that are good, that his eyes could see Fairyland more clearly than the eyes of other men ever could. There are many, many stories in 'the Faerie Queen, ' and out of them all I have told you only eight. Some day you will read the others for yourself. Book Stories for Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories for Children Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Russell Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories for Children The younger boy laughed as he said, Well, Ber tram, but nobody is afraid, then, I should think. Oh, yes, they are. I have known people afraid to go in a churchyard at night by themselves, to stay in a house or room by themselves, when it is dark, or walk home in lonely roads alone: those I call cowards. Then there are fellows who are afraid to do right for fear they should be laughed at, or afraid to speak the truth for fear they should be punished. Fear, in real danger, seems to me only a natural feeling given us to preserve our lives. I don't think that is cowardice. Book The Story of Stories Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Stories Classic Reprint written by Robert Calder Gillie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Stories The book differs from other Lives of Christ for children in two ways. First, a connected narrative and not a mere string of incidents is presented. The transitions in His life and the hinge-points of His ministry have been emphasised, so that every reader, however young, may in some measure understand how the idyll of Bethlehem could not but end in the tragedy and victory of Calvary. Secondly, while care has been taken to avoid theological terms, and always to use language which children at school can understand, an effort has been made to make plain the unique signi ficance of the life of Jesus. He is described not only as the Carpenter of Nazareth, but also as the Saviour of the World. The glory w'hich shines in all His words and deeds is explained, as His disciples explained it, by recognising Him as the Divine Lord. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Tales: From the Animal World Nobody likes to be always learning something. Even Solomon was fain to say at the end, And much study is a weariness to the flesh. Beef and whole-wheat bread are, undoubtedly, muscle builders, but a delicate pudding, or nuts and raisins, or an ice-cream are very pleasant at the end of a dinner, and with out them we feel defrauded Of something that is the cherished heritage of civilized man. Perhaps education has no better purpose than to create a hunger for knowledge and an absorbing desire to learn; but do you, my grown-up reader, ever feel in such mood that philosophy and abstruse poetry and logic pall upon your intellectual taste? Do you sometimes feel in such' mood that only a fascinating monthly magazine or an absorbing short story is the measure of your receptive powers? Everybody must; everybody does; and children more than any others. Children do grow, sometimes, just a little tired Of plumule and radicle, and vertical lines, and Charles and Mary Lamb; while the teacher and the mother, finding that so much time is needed to explain and illustrate, often feel that the child's reading would be far better if he read much more and they explained much less. I once heard a second grade class in a Chicago school reading an easy {esop's Fables as well as you or I could. How in the world did you get second-year children to read like this? I asked the teacher. By having these delightful books which they like - no, love; for, truly, that is their feeling for these fables, she replied. Not a child ever looks around for something else to do when we read these stories. They scarcely raise their eyes from the page, they are so absorbed in them. They have learned to read because they like to read, -and, really, would like to be reading most of the time, if other books were as interesting as these are. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys and I: A Child's Story for Children And little Racey had fallen asleep too, lying at the foot of my bed. He hadn't been kept away from us because of what Tom called the affection of the measles, for the old doctor said he had better get it too and have it over. But he didn't get it, and if ever I have children I shall not do that way with them. I'll try and keep them from having any illnesses at all, for I don't believe we're forced to have them. I think mother thought so too, but she didn't like to contradict the doctor; because he was so old she thought he must know best. And after all it didn't matter, as Racey didn't get the measles. I really must try to go straight ou - I keep going back when other things come into my head, so it isn't so easy to write things down nicely as I thought it was. They believed they would be sorry. For, said they, the buds are the children Of the flowers, and the little playful streams that gambol down the hillsides are the children Of the water; and the small est bright specks playing at hide and seek in the sky all night, must surely be the children Of the stars; and they would all be grieved to see their playmates, the children Of men, no more. There was one clear Shining star that used to come out in the sky before the rest, near the church Spire, above the graves. It was larger and more beautiful, they thought, than all the others, and every night they watched for it, standing hand in hand at a window. -whoever saw it first cried out, I see the star! And often they cried out both to gether, knowing so well when it would rise, and where. SO they grew to be such friends with it, that, before lying down in their beds, they always looked out once again, to bid it good night; and when they were turning round to Sleep, they used to say, God bless the star!
