Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La Resistenza in montagna e quella in pianura.

  • Author : Philip Morgan

Download or read book The Fall of Mussolini written by Philip Morgan and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-06-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic story of Mussolini's fall from power in July 1943, illuminating both the causes and the consequences of this momentous event. Morgan shows how Italians of all classes coped with the extraordinary pressures of wartime living, both on the military and home fronts, and how their experience of the country at war eventually distanced them from the dictator and his fascist regime. Looking beyond Mussolini's initial fall from power, Morgan examines how the Italian people responded to the invasion, occupation, and division of their country by Nazi German and Anglo-American forces - and how crucial the experience of this period was in shaping Italy's post-war sense of nationhood and transition to democracy.

Book The Legacy of the Italian Resistance

Download or read book The Legacy of the Italian Resistance written by Philip Cooke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book adds to this growing body of scholarship on the Italian Resistance by analysing, for the first time, how the 'three wars' are represented over the broad spectrum of Resistance culture from 1945 to the present day. Furthermore, it makes this contribution to scholarship by bridging the gap between historical and cultural analysis. Whereas historians frequently use literary texts in their writings, they are often flawed by an insufficiently nuanced understanding of what a literary text is. Likewise, literary critics who have discussed writers such as Calvino and Vittorini, or films such Paisà and La notte di San Lorenzo, only refer in passing to the historical context in which these works were produced. By fusing historical and cultural analysis, author Philip Cooke makes a unique contribution to our understanding of a key period of Italian history and culture.

Book A History of Contemporary Italy

Download or read book A History of Contemporary Italy written by Paul Ginsborg and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 1990-09-27 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this long-awaited book (already a major bestseller in Italy) Ginsborg has created a fascinating, sophisticated and definitive account of how Italy has coped, or failed to cope, with the past two decades. Contemporary Italy strongly mirrors Britain - the countries have roughly the same extent, population size and GNP - and yet they are fantastically different. Ginsborg sees this difference as most fundamentally clear in the role of the family and it is the family which is at the heart of Italian politics and business. Anyone wishing to understand contemporary Italy will find it essential to have this enormously attractive and intelligent book.

Book The Fascist Revolution in Tuscany 1919 22

Download or read book The Fascist Revolution in Tuscany 1919 22 written by Frank Snowden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1989 book is a detailed study of the social origins of the fascist reaction in Tuscany, which played a key role in the rise of Italian fascism to power. Tuscan fascism was second to none in its violence, organisational strength, intransigence and missionary zeal. The central question is who supported fascism, and why. To what extent did Tuscany, a major agricultural region, conform to national patterns? What are the implications of the pattern of support for fascism in Tuscany for the wider interpretation of the movement? Dr Snowden offers a thematic approach, discussing in turn agrarian fascism, industrial and urban activity, and relations between the black-shirts and state officials. Thus the significance of the fascist militancy of particular social groups and classes can be assessed for the period between the mass strikes in 1919 and the end of labour militancy marked by the beginning of the fascist dictatorship.

Book War Massacre and Recovery in Central Italy 1943 1948

Download or read book War Massacre and Recovery in Central Italy 1943 1948 written by Victoria Belco and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second World War wreaked unprecedented devastation throughout Europe, necessitating monumental reconstruction efforts that burdened not only governments, but the lives of ordinary citizens. War, Massacre, and Recovery in Central Italy, 1943-1948 examines this transitional period in the province of Arezzo by detailing the daily experiences of civilians through the traumas of war and the difficulties of recovery. Studying the aftermath of war in a new and insightful way, Victoria C. Belco shifts the perspective from the national to the local level. With this localized focus, she provides valuable insight into the ways in which civilians coped with an overwhelming range of problems - from adjusting to Allied occupation and widespread displacement to rampant unemployment and the restructuring of local administrations and institutions after fascism. Recreating the post-war atmosphere of disorder, need, and political upheaval, Belco shows how the competing community interests caused social fragmentations that impeded change, while the unity of a shared past prevented civil war.

Book Jewish Women in the Early Italian Women s Movement 1861 1945

Download or read book Jewish Women in the Early Italian Women s Movement 1861 1945 written by Ruth Nattermann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first epoch-spanning study on Jewish participation in the Italian women’s movement, focussing in a transnational perspective on the experience of Italian-Jewish protagonists in Liberal Italy, during the First World War and the Fascist dictatorship until 1945. Drawing on ego-documents, contemporary journals and Jewish community archives, as well as records by the police and public authorities, it examines the tensions within the emancipation process between participation and exclusion. The book argues that the racial laws from 1938 did not represent the sudden end of an idyllic integration, but rather the climax of a long-term development. Social marginalization, the persecution of Jewish rights, and the assault on Jewish lives during fascism are analysed distinctly from the perspective of Jewish women. In spite of their significant influence on the transnational orientation of the Italian women’s movement, their emancipation as women and Jews remained incomplete.
