Book Stopping a dangerous Revolution

Download or read book Stopping a dangerous Revolution written by Stuart Miller and published by Stuart Miller. This book was released on 2022-05-22 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I provide an in-depth, analytical, and philosophical explanation of why specific cultural and social issues exist. With each topic, I discuss what it is, give examples for each, and break down each example providing more detail of just some of the possible reasons as to why people do them (possible mentalities). I also give some of my own experiences and everything discussed in this book, I have personally witnessed and or have gone thru. I included the following: * Situations based on personal experience and or witnessing them, with some online research to support specific issues. * My perception, perspective, and mentality on various issues that affects everyone to some degree * Quotes that further support certain chapter topics * Philosophies, analogies, and comparisons to provide better contextual clarification on certain issues * Detailed breakdown of the examples provided within each chapter * Explanation of what it will take to help fix each of these issues * Some of the many possible reasons why people behave the way they do and some of the possible motives, intentions, and life experiences from both sides (the person doing the behavior and the person receiving the treatment) * Solutions to all the topics that are discussed (changes that we need to make with how we think and act towards others) Furthermore, I provide much thought-provoking material to challenge the way we think and view society, in ways you might not have considered. I discuss many unhealthy mentalities and behaviors which is damaging to people on a much larger scale and it's having a much greater influence on others both directly and indirectly in ways that we do not even realize. This book is something the whole world needs to read and here is why: * Providing solutions to some of the biggest cultural and social issues which have existed for far too long * The way the world is with how we treat others is badly broken and some of the solutions are in this book which the world needs the solutions I provide * We do the same or similar behaviors towards others expecting different results and this is not working at all * We need to step outside our comfort zone by changing their behaviors in ways we're not used to doing (to get something you've never had, you must first do something that you've never done) * The world needs to be less close-minded and use less tunnel vision (the mind is like a parachute, it can't work if it's not opened) I see the world differently, and the purpose of this book is to share different ways of looking at situations and the numerous possibilities to take into consideration. I share my perception and perspective, viewpoint, mentality, and some of my own philosophies. I provide a more in-depth perspective of looking at a variety of life situations and the possible reasons why people choose to treat others the way they do. I think a lot of people might find this content in general interesting, beneficial, inspiring, and or even life-changing.

Book Revolutions a Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Revolutions a Very Short Introduction written by Jack A. Goldstone and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the 20th and 21st century revolutions have become more urban, often less violent, but also more frequent and more transformative of the international order. Whether it is the revolutions against Communism in Eastern Europe and the USSR; the "color revolutions" across Asia, Europe and North Africa; or the religious revolutions in Iran, Afghanistan, and Syria; today's revolutions are quite different from those of the past. Modern theories of revolution have therefore replaced the older class-based theories with more varied, dynamic, and contingent models of social and political change. This new edition updates the history of revolutions, from Classical Greece and Rome to the Revolution of Dignity in the Ukraine, with attention to the changing types and outcomes of revolutionary struggles. It also presents the latest advances in the theory of revolutions, including the issues of revolutionary waves, revolutionary leadership, international influences, and the likelihood of revolutions to come. This volume provides a brief but comprehensive introduction to the nature of revolutions and their role in global history"--

Book Blueprint for Revolution

Download or read book Blueprint for Revolution written by Srdja Popovic and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An urgent and accessible handbook for peaceful protesters, activists, and community organizers—anyone trying to defend their rights, hold their government accountable, or change the world Blueprint for Revolution will teach you how to • make oppression backfire by playing your opponents’ strongest card against them • identify the “almighty pillars of power” in order to shift the balance of control • dream big, but start small: learn how to pick battles you can win • listen to what people actually care about in order to incorporate their needs into your revolutionary vision • master the art of compromise to bring together even the most disparate groups • recognize your allies and view your enemies as potential partners • use humor to make yourself heard, defuse potentially violent situations, and “laugh your way to victory” Praise for Blueprint for Revolution “The title is no exaggeration. Otpor’s methods . . . have been adopted by democracy movements around the world. The Egyptian opposition used them to topple Hosni Mubarak. In Lebanon, the Serbs helped the Cedar Revolution extricate the country from Syrian control. In Maldives, their methods were the key to overthrowing a dictator who had held power for thirty years. In many other countries, people have used what Canvas teaches to accomplish other political goals, such as fighting corruption or protecting the environment.”—The New York Times “A clear, well-constructed, and easily applicable set of principles for any David facing any Goliath (sans slingshot, of course) . . . By the end of Blueprint, the idea that a punch is no match for a punch line feels like anything but a joke.”—The Boston Globe “An entertaining primer on the theory and practice of peaceful protest.”—The Guardian “With this wonderful book, Srdja Popovic is inspiring ordinary people facing injustice and oppression to use this tool kit to challenge their oppressors and create something much better. When I was growing up, we dreamed that young people could bring down those who misused their power and create a more just and democratic society. For Srdja Popovic, living in Belgrade in 1998, this same dream was potentially a much more dangerous idea. But with an extraordinarily courageous group of students that formed Otpor!, Srdja used imagination, invention, cunning, and lots of humor to create a movement that not only succeeded in toppling the brutal dictator Slobodan Milošević but has become a blueprint for nonviolent revolution around the world. Srdja rules!”—Peter Gabriel “Blueprint for Revolution is not only a spirited guide to changing the world but a breakthrough in the annals of advice for those who seek justice and democracy. It asks (and not heavy-handedly): As long as you want to change the world, why not do it joyfully? It’s not just funny. It’s seriously funny. No joke.”—Todd Gitlin, author of The Sixties and Occupy Nation

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER We all know the system isn’t working. Our governments are corrupt and the opposing parties pointlessly similar. Our culture is filled with vacuity and pap, and we are told there’s nothing we can do: “It’s just the way things are.” In this book, Russell Brand hilariously lacerates the straw men and paper tigers of our conformist times and presents, with the help of experts as diverse as Thomas Piketty and George Orwell, a vision for a fairer, sexier society that’s fun and inclusive. You have been lied to, told there’s no alternative, no choice, and that you don’t deserve any better. Brand destroys this illusory facade as amusingly and deftly as he annihilates Morning Joe anchors, Fox News fascists, and BBC stalwarts. This book makes revolution not only possible but inevitable and fun.

Book The Climate Majority

Download or read book The Climate Majority written by Leo Barasi and published by New Internationalist. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Climate Majority is the first book to investigate climate apathy, to describe how it prevents action to stop climate change and to show how it can be beaten with an approach developed for political campaigns. Leo Barasi argues that dangerous climate change will only be prevented if the majority of people—including those who aren’t environmentalists—are persuaded of the need to limit emissions. He applies his policy and campaign experience to show that politicizing climate change makes it more difficult to build consensus, particularly among people who are currently apathetic. This is one of few books to focus on public opinion and climate change and it attempts to reveal what people really think by drawing examples and evidence of from the United States, the UK, Australia, and Canada. In a time of growing nationalism in many developed countries—and right-wing negativity towards the need for meaningful action—The Climate Majority offers a new way of understanding what can be done within the system, rather than despite it. In an era of political setbacks for sustainability, we need new hope and new tools. Anyone who cares about climate change can draw on the lessons in this book to help build a climate majority. Leo Barasi is a freelance consultant on climate change policy and campaigns. He works with charities, political candidates, and private companies to help them understand and change public opinion. He writes regularly for the New Statesman, openDemocracy, and Climate Home.

Book excerpt: The events of 1989/90 in Europe demonstrated the renewed relevance of the mid-nineteenth century uprisings: both by showing, once again, how a revolutionary initiative could quickly spread through different European countries, but also by calling into question the nature of revolution and the criteria for a revolution's success and failure. To commemorate the 1848 revolution in a spirit of renewed critical inquiry, an international team of prominent historians have come together to produce what must be the most comprehensive work on this topic to date and to offer a synthesis that sums up the current state of scholarly research, emphasizing the many new interpretations that have developed over several decades.

Book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster

Download or read book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster written by Bill Gates and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

Book Stopping Climate Change

  • Author : Paul Ekins
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis

  • ISBN : 1000997545
  • Pages : 463 pages

Download or read book Stopping Climate Change written by Paul Ekins and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the leading experts in the field, Paul Ekins, Stopping Climate Change provides a comprehensive overview of what is required to achieve ‘real zero’ carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, and negative emissions thereafter, which is the only way to stop human- induced climate change. This will require innovation in socio-technical systems, and in human behaviour, on an unprecedented scale. Stopping Climate Change describes the changes required to meet this goal: in technologies, social institutions and individual activities. Paul Ekins examines in detail issues around the supply and demand of energy and materials, and the efficiency of their use. It also analyses greenhouse gas removal technologies, offsetting and geoengineering, and plots the reduction of the non- CO2 greenhouse gas-emitting activities. Having set out the changes required, Ekins considers the economic implications, in terms of both the innovation and investments that are necessary to bring them about, and the effects that these are likely to have on national economies. The evidence presented points clearly to the economic impacts of decarbonisation being positive for the majority of countries, and for the world as a whole, even before considering the benefits of avoided climate change. When the health benefits of stopping the burning of fossil fuels are factored in, the global net benefits of decarbonisation are unequivocal. Drawing on examples from the UK and Europe, but with wider relevance at a global scale, Stopping Climate Change clearly shows how determined policy action at different levels could stop climate change. It will be of great interest to students, scholars and policymakers researching and working in the field of climate change and energy policy.

Book The Limits of Violence

Download or read book The Limits of Violence written by Ira Chaleff and published by Ira Chaleff. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized violence of man on man continues to be part of the human experience. In many cases, despotic regimes perpetrate this violence. In other situations, violence is the response of people that rebel against oppressive systems. In the book "The Limits of Violence: Lessons of a Revolutionary Life·, Ira Chaleff compiles the memories and reflections of Élan Le Vieux, a hundred year old revolutionary who lived through much of the political turmoil of the 20th century. Under the premise that people have the right to stand up to an oppressive regime, Élan focus the violent methods of revolutionary struggle, their legitimacy, consequences and limits. He analyzes the challenge of replacing an oppressive regime without becoming the new oppressor. With this approach, Élan contributes to the conception, development and preservation of the highest values of any genuine revolution, independent of its ideological views. Élan’s counsel to 21st century revolutionaries is to first analyze if they can achieve their goals through reforms before concluding that revolution is the only mechanism. Once negotiations for freedom from oppression are exhausted, Élan calls for consideration of modern revolutionary tools that can become as or more effective than the traditional armed struggle. If the final judgment is that violence to combat violence is the only possible course of action, Élan examines how to do this without becoming a violent individual or establishing a regime as oppressive as the one the revolutionary is trying to overthrow. Throughout this book, Élan offers an ethical revolutionary path to becoming a great historical character that future generations will admire and honor.

Book They Must Be Stopped

Download or read book They Must Be Stopped written by Brigitte Gabriel and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2008-09-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They Must Be Stopped is New York Times bestselling author Brigitte Gabriel's warning to the world: We can no longer ignore the growth of radical Islam–we must act soon, and powerfully. Drawing from seventh-century teachings, Gabriel probes into how fundamentalist Islam, under the guise of religious liberty, perpetuates hatred towards western values while exploiting the U.S. legal system. This crucial work takes a hard look at madrassas, flagging their surge in America as part of a rising radical army on U.S. soil. Gabriel fearlessly critiques an overbearing climate of political correctness that often stifles candid discussions about radical Islam. She passionately advocates that America must shed its restraint, questioning its complacency towards this growing internal threat, and demand its representatives to take protective action. Delving into its religious and historical basis, the encroachments across the globe, and systemic abuses of democracy in the name of religion, They Must Be Stopped serves as a clarion call to the world.
