Book Mission Accomplished

Download or read book Mission Accomplished written by Muriel Engelman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former World War II army nurse shares her extraordinary life stories visualized from her earliest childhood memories over eighty years ago, to the present. Muriel Engelman begins her fascinating narrative by detailing her journey through childhood during the Great Depression and then transitioning into her structured life as a student nurse. Caring for polio patients in a city hospital she becomes skilled in dealing with difficult patients. Upon graduation she was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and sailed with her hospital unit in late 1943 for England, serving there for six months. Her unit arrived in Normandy, France after D Day, followed the advancing army and eventually operated a 1,000 bed tent hospital in Liege, Belgium. Lighter off-duty moments balanced out the threat of capture and continuous buzz bombs, all while caring for wounded American soldiers. This is all described in excerpts from actual letters penned to her family often by the dim light of a kerosene lantern or flashlight, knowing as she wrote that survival was not a guaranteed possibility. Engelman shares vivid descriptions of the people, settings and memories in a timeless style that will transport anyone back to an era when the future of the world was uncertain, and the bravery of those who sacrificed everything to protect America was not forgotten.

Book Stop the Clock

  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Stop the Clock written by Gordon McLauchlan and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best way to learn anything is by doing it - this is a maxim that goes back to Aristotle. Gordon McLauchlan agrees. He has concluded that the only way of learning how to manage growing old is by growing old. He doesn't believe that wisdom is necessarily a concomitant of old age but suggests that, while there is no fool like an old fool, it is also true that there is no sage like an old sage. Borrowing quotes from philosophers and writers collected in a Commonplace Book over more than sixty years, Gordon traces his own ascent into the eighties. Ascent, he insists, not descent as so many politicians and economists would claim as they discuss the concerns of the ageing the way parents sometimes speak to each other about their children in the same room.

Book The Tick of Two Clocks

Download or read book The Tick of Two Clocks written by Joan Bakewell and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An inspiration to anyone who still finds old age too distressing a prospect to take seriously' The Times Old age is no longer a blip in the calendar, just a few declining years before the end. Old age is now a major and important part of life: It should command as much thought - even anxiety - as teenagers give to exam results and young marrieds how many children to have . . . I am in my 80s and moving towards the end of my life. But in a more actual sense, I have moved from my dear home of 50 odd years into another . . . the home where I will be until the end. Writing here of how it has happened is in a sense a reconciliation with what cannot be avoided, but which can be confronted When Joan Bakewell, Labour Peer, author and famous champion of the older people's right to a good and fruitful life, decided that she could no longer remain in her old home, she had to confront what she calls 'the next segment of life.' Disposing of things accumulated during a long life, saying goodbye to her home and the memories of more than fifty years, thinking about what is needed for downsizing - all suddenly became urgent and emotional tasks. And then there was managing family expectations. Some new projects such as planning the colours and layout of a new, smaller flat, were exciting and some things - the ridding herself of books, paintings, memento - took courage. So much of the world is on the move- voluntarily or not - and so many people are living to a great old age. In using the tale of her own life , Joan Bakewell tells us a story of our times and how she is learning to live to the sound and tune of The Tick of Two Clocks: the old and the new.

Book I m Sorry about the Clock

Download or read book I m Sorry about the Clock written by Thomas A. Pendleton and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pendleton, that virtually none of these temporal incoherences seem to have been noted before. Moreover, this study departs from the critical consensus that the earlier drafts of the novel are evidence of Fitzgerald's consummate artistry. Among the discoveries presented here are that Fitzgerald made no use of the 1922 calendar; that he did not work out the novel's time scheme until after completing about half of the manuscript version (possibly because he intended Gatsby to be much longer); and that, quite probably, he attempted to disguise at least some of the book's temporal misplacements and contradictions. Further, this study shows that even the most praised of Fitzgerald's revisions - his relocation of materials dealing with Gatsby's past so as to gradually reveal his secret - was apparently without exception accompanied by faulty temporal connections to the plot line.

Book Turning Back the Clock

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time: 2000 to 2005, the years of neoconservatism, terrorism, the twenty-four-hour news cycle, the ascension of Bush, Blair, and Berlusconi, and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Umberto Eco's response is a provocative, passionate, and witty series of essays--which originally appeared in the Italian newspapers La Repubblica and L'Espresso--that leaves no slogan unexamined, no innovation unexposed. What led us into this age of hot wars and media populism, and how was it sold to us as progress? Eco discusses such topics as racism, mythology, the European Union, rhetoric, the Middle East, technology, September 11, medieval Latin, television ads, globalization, Harry Potter, anti-Semitism, logic, the Tower of Babel, intelligent design, Italian street demonstrations, fundamentalism, The Da Vinci Code, and magic and magical thinking. The famous author and respected scholar shows his practical, engaged side: an intellectual involved in events both local and global, a man concerned about taste, politics, education, ethics, and where our troubled world is headed.

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of The Midnight Library. “A quirky romcom dusted with philosophical observations….A delightfully witty…poignant novel.” —The Washington Post “She smiled a soft, troubled smile and I felt the whole world slipping away, and I wanted to slip with it, to go wherever she was going… I had existed whole years without her, but that was all it had been. An existence. A book with no words.” Tom Hazard has just moved back to London, his old home, to settle down and become a high school history teacher. And on his first day at school, he meets a captivating French teacher at his school who seems fascinated by him. But Tom has a dangerous secret. He may look like an ordinary 41-year-old, but owing to a rare condition, he's been alive for centuries. Tom has lived history--performing with Shakespeare, exploring the high seas with Captain Cook, and sharing cocktails with Fitzgerald. Now, he just wants an ordinary life. Unfortunately for Tom, the Albatross Society, the secretive group which protects people like Tom, has one rule: Never fall in love. As painful memories of his past and the erratic behavior of the Society's watchful leader threaten to derail his new life and romance, the one thing he can't have just happens to be the one thing that might save him. Tom will have to decide once and for all whether to remain stuck in the past, or finally begin living in the present. How to Stop Time tells a love story across the ages—and for the ages—about a man lost in time, the woman who could save him, and the lifetimes it can take to learn how to live.
