Book Stop Screaming I m Scared Too

Download or read book Stop Screaming I m Scared Too written by Rod Henderson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part Chickenhawk and part Exit Wounds … a powerful and timely contribution to a nation’s understanding of what we ask of our service men and women and the debt we owe … Matt Anderson PSM, Director, Australian War Memorial ‘Stop screaming, I’m scared too!’ is not what you’d expect to see on the back of a loadmaster’s helmet in a Chinook helicopter flying over southern Afghanistan, but for Rod Henderson it sums up his 22 years of service as a soldier in the Australian Army. During the busiest period in the Army’s history, Rod was deployed to East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan and Afghanistan. In Australia, he was involved in counter terrorism operations and disaster recovery. From an infantry paratrooper, to Chinook loadmaster and Black Hawk door gunner, Rod reveals an enthralling and unique perspective of service. Whether it is ‘right place wrong time’ or just unlucky, he found himself in a series of life threatening and traumatic events. Each one took a toll. Accepting the physical injuries and mental health challenges from his service, Rod found healing in the hallowed halls of the Australian War Memorial. This is not the story of a general or a Special Forces hero. It is the extraordinary memoir of a regular Australian soldier. Like so many others who have served their country with honour and distinction, the little-known stories of ordinary soldiers deserve to be told. In Stop Screaming, I’m Scared Too, Rod reveals the depth of his soldiering experiences with humour, humility, self-reflection and honesty. Testimonials: "A gripping tale of duty, danger, and unexpected twists. This is the life of an infantry soldier turned door gunner on a chinook as a loadmaster in Afghanistan. What a ride" – Phillip Thompson OAM MP, Federal Member for Herbert "Gritty, raw, funny and honest. This is the story of a contemporary Australian veteran" – Dr Karl James, Head of Military History, Australian War Memorial.

Book First Responder

Download or read book First Responder written by Jennifer Murphy and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One woman's incredible story of life on the front lines as an emergency medical worker in New York City. On the streets of New York City, EMTs and paramedics do more than respond to emergencies; they eat and drink together, look out for each other’s safety, mercilessly make fun of one another, date one other, and, most crucially, share terrifying experiences and grave injustices suffered under the city’s long-broken EMS system. Their loyalty to one another is fierce and absolute. As Jennifer Murphy shows in the gripping and moving First Responder, they are a family. A dysfunctional family, perhaps, but what family isn't? Many in the field of pre-hospital emergency care have endured medical trauma and familial hardship themselves. Some are looking to give back. Some are desperate for family. Some were inspired by 9/11. Still others want to become doctors, nurses, firefighters, cops, and want to cut their teeth on the streets. As rescuers, they never want people to die or get hurt. But if they are going to die or get hurt, first responders want to be there. Despite the vital role they play New York City, EMTs are paid less than trash collectors, and far less than any other first responder makes, even though the burden of medical emergencies fall on the backs of EMTs and medics. Yet for Jennifer and her brothers and sisters, it's a calling more than a job. First responders are constantly exposed to infectious diseases, violence, and death. The coronavirus pandemic did not change that math; the public is just more aware of it. After 9/11, EMT training schools experienced a surge in applications from civilians wanting to become first responders, inspired by rescuers who responded to the terrorist attacks and rushed into the burning towers when everyone else ran out. The same will almost certainly be true post-coronavirus as people are moved by a desire to help in times of crisis in a more direct way. Funny and heartwarming, inspiring and poignant, First Responder follows Jennifer's journey to becoming an EMT and working during and beyond the Covid-19 pandemic. She will bring readers inside an intense world filled with crisis, rescue, grief, uncertainty, and dark humor. First Responder will move readers to a greater understanding and appreciation of those fighting for them—wherever they live—in a world they hardly know or could imagine.

Book Peter s Wars

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Geddes
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2024-09-04
  • ISBN : 1923144588
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Peter s Wars written by Peter Geddes and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-09-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fiercely funny memoir is set in Melbourne during the 1940s. The entrenched Protestant–Catholic divide of those times informs the narrative. Juxtaposed is the gulf between Melburnians and the thousands of Yanks stationed in their city following Pearl Harbor; the dizzying effect on the women had far-reaching consequences. Growing resentment and the increasing fear of a Japanese invasion add to the tension. Born in 1938, Peter relates that he was conceived twice. The conception resulting in his parents’ marriage occurs in the back of a ’36 Chevy. Five months after the wedding, his mother (who wasn’t above telling a little fib) experiences the first signs of pregnancy: it is then she knows that she doesn’t want to be a mother. As the war escalates Peter’s father joins the RAAF, leaving Peter with a mother who resents having a small child to care for. Neglected, cold and hungry, shame engulfs him when his mother entertains a stream of GIs. Blending the matter-of-fact voice of a child with the accomplished voice of a journalist, Peter’s Wars captures the precise detail of the period: a kitchen without heating or running water, black market grog, rationing … the combination of satire and realism highlighting human truths with stark acuity. When Peter turns ten, his rich Catholic grandmother decides his religious education should not be neglected any longer and enrols him at Xavier College. There, Peter learns about eternal damnation and hellfire. Terrified, he responds by trying to make up for ten years of religious ignorance by attending daily mass and amassing enough ‘good’ points to save his soul. Peter’s Wars is a memoir that begins and ends with the defining factors of every human life: time and place. PRAISE FOR THE BOOK 'Peter's vivid writing has a fly-on-the-wall immediacy which, when filtered through a child's all-seeing eyes, captures the very essence of Melbourne society and Australia as a whole during World War II.' - Sean Doyle, author of Australia's Trail-Blazing First Novelist: John Lang 'This sparkling memoir is as uniquely Australian as Summer of the Seventeenth Doll and The Castle.’ - Carrolline Rhodes, author and editor

Book A Child Speaks

Book excerpt: Dee Dee Brumm asks readers to hold her in their hearts as they read her memories of a childhood scarred by sexual abuse. It is a survivors story, the details unremembered until she grew to adulthood. Her story reflects the many dilemmas that a child faces, including dependency, the desire for independence, and the frustrations resulting from adult views of the child. Brumm addresses the vulnerabilities children experience and makes it clear that anger at a child can sometimes endanger that childs life. The author hopes that after reading her true story, readers will have a greater awareness of the dangers that can mar a childs life, and the unintended consequences of actions taken without love.

Download or read book Don t Cry written by Hannes Kalisch and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Enlhet, an Indigenous people of the Paraguayan Chaco, remained virtually untouched by colonialism until the 1920s. This changed with the arrival of Mennonites, who began settling in the centre of Enlhet territory in 1927; the Chaco War soon after (1932–35); the deadliest conflict in the western hemisphere after the American Civil War; and a terrible smallpox epidemic at the same time. In Don’t Cry the Enlhet give their own account of this period, focusing on their experiences of the war between Paraguay and Bolivia, in voices never before heard outside their own society. Their accounts, translated from the Enlhet language and set alongside sensitive historical-anthropological analysis, allow unprecedented access to these hitherto hidden perspectives. Enlhet witnesses to those times describe the processes of colonization to which they were subjected while, at the same time, insisting on their own vision of the world. This vision challenges the views of colonial society, symbolizing the search for a relationship that assumes a shared history, addresses the gulf between peoples, and embraces the potential of each. These oral histories bear witness to the role of Indigenous voices in overcoming the colonial mindset deeply rooted within Western societies, which lacks the conceptual framework to meet Indigenous societies on equal terms. A unique example of history from an Indigenous perspective, this book reflects a crucial moment for a people who preserved their language despite adverse circumstances and whose origins still inform their daily life. Don’t Cry demonstrates the importance of native voices for both Indigenous and colonial societies.
