Book excerpt: In most globalizing economies, workers engaged in the informal sector occupy the lowest rungs of society. This book examines one such group—stone quarry workers located beyond the expanding rim of south Delhi and beneath the radar of effective law and policy. Drawing upon extensive case studies and personal narratives of this labouring class, Talib focuses on their inner world and interprets their life stories. He records the dwindling oral tradition of these people and brings to the fore the dynamics of survival. Questioning the discourse that views this group as passive objects, the book portrays them as active negotiators of their own circumstances. This work is crucial to an understanding of the current debates on labour and development studies. It presents the workers' story of social exclusion and struggle for survival, which is rarely heard amidst the counter narratives of the formal sector's economic boom.

Book Utah s 19th Century Stone Quarries

Download or read book Utah s 19th Century Stone Quarries written by William T. Parry and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pioneer emigrants belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fleeing violent persecution arrived in Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The group included skilled craftsmen familiar with building trades. They soon located exposures of stone suitable for quarrying and building construction. Stone quarrymen and masons used methods and tools learned from their former homes to extract, shape, and build structures now landmarks in today's cities. Nineteenth century quarries were opened in Cache Valley, Salt Lake Valley, Sanpete Valley, Beaver, and St George. The stone quarried was as diverse in origin as the quarrymen themselves. Quarrymen had learned their trade from such diverse locales as Tennessee, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, Denmark, Sweden, Wales, Canada, and England. They became the settlers in Utah communities. Most of the quarry workers remain nameless and forgotten, but a few left journals so their stories can be told. The buildings constructed of the quarried stone include temples and cathedrals, municipal buildings, courthouses, military buildings, and private homes. The Logan LDS Temple is built of Swan Peak Formation that accumulated in the ocean. The Salt Lake Temple is built of granite and sandstone, the Manti LDS Temple of oolite limestone, and the St. George Temple built of red sandstone and black basalt covered with white stucco. The Cathedral of the Madeline and the city and county buildings in Salt Lake are made of Kyune sandstone. The Kearns Mansion in Salt Lake and Spreckels Mansion in San Francisco are oolite limestone. Fort Douglas in Salt Lake is red sandstone, and Fort Cameron in Beaver is black basalt. Utah's major stone quarries reveal a fascinating history of the men who worked the quarries, characteristics of the stone, and the buildings constructed.

Book The Significance and Social Impact of Quarrying in Shropshire in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Download or read book The Significance and Social Impact of Quarrying in Shropshire in the 19th and 20th Centuries written by Robert S. Galloway and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-19 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quarrying is one of the oldest industries known to man, as, from early times, people have been making items from stone. However, the quarrying industry is only briefly mentioned in most archaeological and historical records, with some books only giving a passing account of this activity. This book alters this and provides an in-depth analysis of this important industry, not only with regards to Shropshire, but the whole country. Many structures in Shropshire and various parts of the country are constructed from stone quarried from this large county. This book shows that quarries are not just holes or scars on the landscape, highlighting the machinery used in extracting and processing the quarried minerals.
