Book I Will Survive

Download or read book I Will Survive written by Bernice Swann and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-12-30 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hi, my name is Berni, short for Bernice, and I am living on borrowed time. I nearly died in June 1987 and again in September 2009. The reason? Cancer! I am sitting here on the 5th of June 2011 writing this book, yet in August of 2010 I had found a priestess who could give me a pagan funeral and found and asked a dressmaker to make my shroud, I had wanted a full length dress with a hood and gone into town to find the material and been measured. To fall in line with my beliefs, I needed a material that was mainly red and found just what I was looking for, a red and Chinese dragon printed material and had it delivered. I had asked the dressmaker to do the garment by Christmas as I didnt expect to live past Christmas, but was still aiming to go to my sister in law for it. I was looking forward to my Birthday party in October and feeling pretty weak. I was dying of Oesophageal Cancer and I had all the treatment that was available. All I could now do was wait to die. Well I wasnt ready to do that so I was fighting with all I have in me. I thought I was fighting a losing battle but damn I have never given up when it really mattered, so I had no intention of starting now. This is my story and I hope that what is written here will inspire others to fight and win.

Book The Voice of the Past

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Thompson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-02-24
  • ISBN : 0199335486
  • Pages : 505 pages

Download or read book The Voice of the Past written by Paul Thompson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oral history gives history back to the people in their own words. And in giving a past, it also helps them towards a future of their own making. Oral history and life stories help to create a truer picture of the past and the changing present, documenting the lives and feelings of all kinds of people, many otherwise hidden from history. It explores personal and family relationships and uncovers the secret cultures of work. It connects public and private experience, and it highlights the experiences of migrating between cultures. At the same time it can bring courage to the old, meaning to communities, and contact between generations. Sometimes it can offer a path for healing divided communities and those with traumatic memories. Without it the history and sociology of our time would be poor and narrow. In this fourth edition of his pioneering work, fully revised with Joanna Bornat, Paul Thompson challenges the accepted myths of historical scholarship. He discusses the reliability of oral evidence in comparison with other sources and considers the social context of its development. He looks at the relationship between memory, the self and identity. He traces oral history through its own past and weighs up the recent achievements of a movement which has become international, with notably strong developments in North America, Europe, Australia, Latin America, South Africa and the Far East, despite resistance from more conservative academics. This new edition combines the classic text of The Voice of the Past with many new sections, including especially the worldwide development of different forms of oral history and the parallel memory boom, as well as discussions of theory in oral history and of memory, trauma and reconciliation. It offers a deep social and historical interpretation along with succinct practical advice on designing and carrying out a project, The Voice of the Past remains an invaluable tool for anyone setting out to use oral history and life stories to construct a more authentic and balanced record of the past and the present.

Download or read book Creativity written by Harriet Hawkins and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity, whether lauded as the oil of the 21st century, touted as a driver of international policy, or mobilised by activities, has been very much part of the zeitgeist of the last few decades. Offering the first accessible, but conceptually sophisticated account of the critical geographies of creativity, this title provides an entry point to the diverse ways in which creativity is conceptualized as a practice, promise, force, concept and rhetoric. It proffers these critical geographies as the means to engage with the relations and tensions between a range of forms of arts and cultural production, the cultural economy and vernacular, mundane and everyday creative practices. Exploring a series of sites, Creativity examines theoretical and conceptual questions around the social, economic, cultural, political and pedagogic imperatives of the geographies of creativity, using these geographies as a lens to cohere broader interdisciplinary debates. Central concepts, cutting-edge research and methodological debates are made accessible with the use of inset boxes that present key ideas, case studies and research. The text draws together interdisciplinary perspectives on creativity, enabling scholars and students within and without Geography to understand and engage with the critical geographies of creativity, their breadth and potential. The volume will prove essential reading for undergraduate and post-graduate students of creativity, cultural geography, the creative economy, cultural industries and heritage.
