Download or read book Is All that Talk Just Noise The Information Content of Internet Stock Message Boards written by Murray Z. Frank and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literally millions of messages have been posted on internet stock message boards. Financial press reports claim that these postings can move markets. We study message posting on Yahoo! Finance and Raging Bull for the firms that were in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Dow Jones Internet Commerce Index during the year 2000. Using computional linguistics methods we measure the bullishness of the messages. Significant predictive content was found between message posting and trading volume, between message posting and volatility, between the degree of bullishness of the messages and trading volume. These results were obtained even after taking news stories from the Wall Street Journal into account.

Book The Impact of Manipulation in Internet Stock Message Boards

Download or read book The Impact of Manipulation in Internet Stock Message Boards written by Jean-Yves Delort and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internet message boards are often used to spread information in order to manipulate financial markets. Although this hypothesis is supported by many cases reported in the literature and in the media, the real impact of manipulation in online forums on financial markets remains an open question. This work analyses the effect of manipulation in internet stock message boards on financial markets. We employ a unique corpus of moderated messages to investigate market manipulation. Internet message boards administrators use the process of moderation to restrict market manipulation. From the data we find that manual supervision of stock message boards by moderators does not effectively protect users against manipulation. Furthermore, by focusing on messages that have been moderated as manipulative due to ramping we show that ramping is positively related to market returns, volatility and volume. We also demonstrate that stocks with higher turnover, lower price level, lower market capitalization and higher volatility are more common targets of ramping.

Book New or Noise Internet Postings and Stock Prices

Download or read book New or Noise Internet Postings and Stock Prices written by Robert Tumarkin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anecdotal evidence is growing that postings in Internet financial forums affect stock prices, either because the postings contain new information or because they represent successful attempts to manipulate stock prices. From an investment perspective, knowing whether this phenomenon is pervasive is important. We examined the relationship between Internet message board activity and abnormal stock returns and trading volume in the period from mid-April 1999 to mid-February 2000. Our study focused on the RagingBull.com discussion forum, an extremely popular site whose format permits the construction of an objective measure of investor opinions. For stocks in the Internet service sector, we found that on days with abnormally high message activity, changes in investor opinion correlated with abnormal industry-adjusted returns. These event days also coincided with abnormally high trading volume, which persisted for a second day. However, we found that message board activity did not predict industry-adjusted returns or abnormal trading volume, which is consistent with market efficiency.

Book excerpt: We provide the first empirical investigation into the impact of Internet Stock Message Board takeover rumors on the price discovery process in the United States equity market. Our investigation involves using an innovative five-stage filtering process, that employs computational linguistics methods, to derive a unique sample of 2,898 first post Message Board takeover rumors disseminated during the period January 2003 to December 2008, inclusive. Overall, our analysis, utilizing intraday Trade and Quote (TAQ) data, reveals that Message Board takeover rumors generate significant positive abnormal returns and trading volumes. Finally, after verifying the robustness of these results to the influence of sample selection bias and an alternative matched control firm abnormal returns metric, we find that Message Board takeover rumors present an economically exploitable opportunity for investors.

Book Local Bias in Investor Attention

Download or read book Local Bias in Investor Attention written by Yuqin Huang and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to studies that focus on investment accounts, this study examines local bias in investor attention by analyzing messages posted by investors on China's Internet stock message boards. We find that individual investors pay more attention to stocks of local companies than to those of nonlocal companies. Local bias is particularly strong in underdeveloped regions, toward large, non-CSI 300, and low-turnover stocks and toward stocks with names that indicate their localities. The marginal effect of local bias is also considerably strong for distances within 500 km.
