Book Stock Assessments for British Columbia Herring in 1990 and Forecasts of the Potential Catch in 1991

Download or read book Stock Assessments for British Columbia Herring in 1990 and Forecasts of the Potential Catch in 1991 written by V. Haist and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents stock assessments from an escapement model and an age-structured model developed specifically for B.C. herring. Both models reconstruct stock abundance for 1951-90 and forecast pre-spawning abundance for the 1991 season. Forecasts of recruit spawners are presented as poor, average, and good based on historically observed means.

Download or read book Pinnipeds and El Ni o written by Fritz Trillmich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: El Niño is a meteorological and oceanographic phenomenon, which occurs at irregular intervals in the eastern tropical Pacific. Its most obvious characteristic is the warming of surface waters, which causes enormous disturbances of the marine environment. A severe Niño may also affect continental systems worldwide. This book gathers in a comprehensive way the information available on the effects of the exceptionally strong 1982-83 Niño on a group of marine mammals, the pinnipeds. It presents an analysis of the effects of environmental stress on the populations of top predators. Data and interpretations are based on a most unusual collection of long-term studies of pinniped population dynamics, behavior and ecology which spanned the El Niño event. The responses of pinniped populations to the El Niño disturbance of the marine ecosystem also has important implications for the management and conservation of marine mammal populations.

Book Stock Assessments for British Columbia Herring in 1991 and Forecasts of the Potential Catch in 1992

Download or read book Stock Assessments for British Columbia Herring in 1991 and Forecasts of the Potential Catch in 1992 written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herring are an important component of the British Columbia commercial fishery with catch records dating from 1877. Since 1983, herring fisheries have been managed with a fixed quota system in which catch levels are determined prior to the season based on a fixed percentage of forecast stock abundance. This report presents stock assessments from escapement and age-structured analytical models that were developed explicitly for B.C. herring. Both models reconstruct stock abundance for 1951-91 and forecast pre-spawning abundance for 1992. Forecasts of recruit spawners are presented as poor, average and good, based on historical recruitment levels. The report does not discuss the development and evaluation of empirical models for forecasting recruitment.

Book Stock Assessment for British Columbia Herring in 2002 and Forecasts of the Potential Catch in 2003

Download or read book Stock Assessment for British Columbia Herring in 2002 and Forecasts of the Potential Catch in 2003 written by J. F. Schweigert and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, herring stock abundance in British Columbia waters was assessed for 2002 and forecasts were made for 2003 using two analytical methods, an age-structured model for the major stock assessment regions and an escapement model for the minor stocks. These models have been applied to assess herring abundance since 1984 and changes were introduced to account for temporal change in the spawn index. All available biological data on total harvest, spawn deposition, and age & size composition of the spawning runs were used to determine current abundance levels. Forecasts of the pre-fishery spawning stock biomass are presented for both models.
