Download or read book Improving Fish Stock Assessments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.

Download or read book Losing Ground written by John R. Nolon and published by Environmental Law Institute. This book was released on 2007 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book calls attention to the emerging issues involved in building on the edge of environmentally vulnerable places, explores why we do this, and proposes ways to mitigate its impact. The challenge of public policy is to acknowledge-and challenge-the conflicts inherent in modern planning philosophy, in the service of sensible environmental regulation.

Download or read book Regional Fisheries Oceanography of the California Current System written by Sam McClatchie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The California Current System is one of the best studied ocean regions of the world, and the level of oceanographic information available is perhaps only surpassed by the northeast and northwest Atlantic. The current literature (later than 1993) offers no comprehensive, integrated review of the regional fisheries oceanography of the California Current System. This volume summarizes information of more than 60-year California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigation (CalCOFI). While providing a large bibliography, the intent was to extract themes relevant to current research rather than to prepare a compendious review of the literature. The work presents a useful review and reference point for multidisciplinary fisheries scientists and biological oceanographers new to working in the California Current System, and to specialists wishing to access information outside their core areas of expertise. In addition it aims to deliver an up to date reference to the current state of knowledge of fisheries oceanography in the California Current System.
Download or read book Some Simple Methods for the Assessment of Tropical Fish Stocks written by Daniel Pauly and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1983 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of methods is based on lecture notes used at a FAO/DANIDA training course held in Mombasa, Kenya, in May-June 1980. The methods presented are: regression and correlation, estimation of growth parameters from length-frequency data, estimation of mortalities (total, natural, fishing mortality) and analysis of catch and effort data. A brief annotated bibliography of tropical fish stock assessment is included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from being commercially and socially significant, anchovies and sardines populations occupy crucial positions in the oceans' ecosystems. Low in the food chain, clupeoids tend towards abundance, as if their purpose in life was to be eaten and fuel the upper levels of marine trophic chains. The present book covers a broad spectrum of topics on

Download or read book Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management written by Jason S. Link and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystem-based fishery management (EBFM) is rapidly becoming the default approach in global fisheries management. The clarity of what EBFM means is sharpening each year and there is now a real need to evaluate progress and assess the effectiveness and impacts. By examining a suite of over 90 indicators (including socioeconomic, governance, environmental forcing, major pressures, systems ecology, and fisheries criteria) for 9 major US fishery ecosystem jurisdictions, the authors systematically track the progress the country has made towards advancing EBFM and making it an operational reality. The assessment covers a wide range of data in both time (multiple decades) and space (from the tropics to the poles, representing over 10% of the world's ocean surface area). The authors view progress towards the implementation of EBFM as synonymous with improved management of living marine resources in general, and highlight the findings from a national perspective. Although US-centric, the lessons learned are directly applicable for all parts of the global ocean. Much work remains, but significant progress has already been made to better address many of the challenges facing the sustainable management of our living marine resources. This is an essential and accessible reference for all fisheries professionals who are currently practicing, or progressing towards, ecosystem-based fisheries management. It will also be of relevance and use to researchers, teachers, managers, and graduate students in marine ecology, fisheries biology, biological oceanography, global change biology, conservation biology, and marine resource management.
