Book Stock Assessment of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2022

Download or read book Stock Assessment of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2022 written by Matthew Albert and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of northern pike Esox lucius ≥450 mm fork length (FL) was estimated in Harding Lake during 2022 using a 2-sample mark–recapture experiment for a closed population. The first sampling event occurred 1–3 and 6–10 June and the second occurred 10–12, 16–18, 23, 25, and 30 August. Hook-and-line gear was used exclusively in both events. Estimated abundance of northern pike ≥450 mm FL was 949 (SE = 114; 90% CI = 761–1,137). Northern pike 450–599 mm FL made up 58% (SE = 9%) of the estimated population and fish ≥600 mm FL accounted for 42% (SE = 11%). The water level at Harding Lake has increased over the past 7 years and is currently at the target elevation of 717 ft above sea level. The higher water level has created and improved habitat for northern pike. This abundance estimate demonstrates that the northern pike population is continuing to increase along with the water level.

Book Operational Plan Amendment Stock Assessment of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2022

This book was released on 2022 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Harding Lake, an updated estimate of northern pike abundance is needed to determine if the population is large enough to reopen the sport fishery. In this lake, the abundance of northern pike ≥ 450 mm FL declined from roughly 2,500 fish in 1993 to 500 in 1999. This decline was attributed to a loss of rearing habitat in shallow vegetated littoral areas and prompted the sport fishery to be closed in 2000. In 2007, water was diverted from Rogge Creek to raise the lake level and re-establish northern pike habitat. As of 2012, the population had not rebounded to its numbers in the early 1990s, and the sport-fishery has remained closed. This study will estimate the abundance and length-composition of northern pike ≥ 450 mm FL in Harding Lake using a two-event mark-recapture experiment to determine if, and in what capacity, the sport fishery is ready to be re-opened. The capture and recapture events will take place in June and August 2020.

Book Estimated Abundance of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2012

Download or read book Estimated Abundance of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2012 written by Klaus G. Wuttig and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of northern pike >450 mm FL was estimated in Harding Lake during 2012 using a 2-sample mark-recapture experiment for a closed population. The first event occurred during May 29-June 7 and a combination of gillnets, fyke nets, hoop traps, and hook-and-line was used to capture fish. The second event occurred during August 7-14 and hook-and-line gear was used exclusively. Abundance was estimated at 567 (SE=47) northern pike >450 mm FL. The length composition was divided into 25-mm length categories and the 550-574 category represented the largest segment (16%) of the estimated population. Harding lake has been closed to fishing for northern pike since the summer of 2000 and the estimated abundance of northern pike during 2012 was well below the minimum level of 1,000 fish >450 mm FL needed to open the fishery to catch-and-release. The low population size is attributed to the chronic loss of shallow littoral areas with emergent vegetation and the associated poor recruitment, which was first evident during the most recent stock assessment in 1999. The last stock assessment during which good recruitment of age-3 and -4 fish was observed occurred in 1996 and corresponded to cohorts from 1992 and 1993 when the water levels ranged between 717.5-717.8 ft ASL. Therefore, this range should be used as a target for reestablishing water levels and historic pike production using the water diversion structure on Rogge Creek. Water level in 2012 was measured at 714.0 ft ASL.

Book Movements and Distributions of Radio tagged Northern Pike in Harding Lake

Download or read book Movements and Distributions of Radio tagged Northern Pike in Harding Lake written by Stafford M. Roach and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report of the results of a mark-recapture experiment in which radio-transmitters were surgically implanted in 14 male and 12 female northern pike (Esox lucius) to estimate movements and distributions relative to vegetation type and depth of water column in Harding Lake (interior Alaska near Fairbanks) in 1992.

Book Stock Assessment and Yield Potential of Lake Trout in the Tangle Lakes System 2023 2024

Download or read book Stock Assessment and Yield Potential of Lake Trout in the Tangle Lakes System 2023 2024 written by Matthew Albert and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objectives of this study are to estimate the abundance and length composition of lake trout Salvelinus namaycush in the Tangle Lakes system and to update the sustainable harvest level using the Lake Area model. Abundance and length composition will be estimated for the portion of the population that is susceptible to capture with hook-and-line sampling gear. To estimate abundance, two-event mark-recapture experiments for closed populations will be conducted on lakes within the Tangle Lakes system. Fish will be captured and marked in Lower Tangle Lake in April 2023 and in Upper, Round, Shallow, and Lower Tangle Lakes in June 2023. Recapture events will occur at the respective lakes in April and June 2024. The weights of fish captured with common sport fishing gear during the June sampling events will be used to estimate the number of fish that can be sustainably harvested on an annual basis using the Lake Area model. Abundance estimates will be generated for individual lakes or groups of lakes based on the movements of recaptured fish and results from a concurrent telemetry study. Abundance estimates will be compared to the updated estimate of sustainable harvest level and to estimates of catch and harvest generated by the Alaska Sport Fishing Statewide Harvest Survey to determine if current harvest limits and regulations are appropriate.

Book Operational Plan Situk River Steelhead Stock Assessment 2022 2024

Download or read book Operational Plan Situk River Steelhead Stock Assessment 2022 2024 written by Jason A. Pawluk and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss are an important sport fish species in Alaska, and the Situk River hosts the state's largest steelhead sport fishery. The primary purpose of this project is to record abundance and size attributes of steelhead kelts in the Situk River. Observations of abundance and fish size are used to determine if run abundance and size characteristics are changing across time. Decreasing trends in steelhead kelt abundance or size could necessitate changes to sport fishing regulations to help ensure the sustainability of the Situk River steelhead population. Furthermore, kelt abundance in the Situk River is used in combination with other abundance counts of steelhead in Alaska to assess trends, both regionally and statewide, that help sustain all steelhead fisheries in the state. The Situk River weir is also used to gather fish mortalities to obtain matched scale and otolith samples from steelhead for aging verification and archiving. Observations of fishery-related wounds are also recorded to assess potential fishery and predation impacts on steelhead.
