Book Reinforcement Learning and Stochastic Optimization

Download or read book Reinforcement Learning and Stochastic Optimization written by Warren B. Powell and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 1090 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REINFORCEMENT LEARNING AND STOCHASTIC OPTIMIZATION Clearing the jungle of stochastic optimization Sequential decision problems, which consist of “decision, information, decision, information,” are ubiquitous, spanning virtually every human activity ranging from business applications, health (personal and public health, and medical decision making), energy, the sciences, all fields of engineering, finance, and e-commerce. The diversity of applications attracted the attention of at least 15 distinct fields of research, using eight distinct notational systems which produced a vast array of analytical tools. A byproduct is that powerful tools developed in one community may be unknown to other communities. Reinforcement Learning and Stochastic Optimization offers a single canonical framework that can model any sequential decision problem using five core components: state variables, decision variables, exogenous information variables, transition function, and objective function. This book highlights twelve types of uncertainty that might enter any model and pulls together the diverse set of methods for making decisions, known as policies, into four fundamental classes that span every method suggested in the academic literature or used in practice. Reinforcement Learning and Stochastic Optimization is the first book to provide a balanced treatment of the different methods for modeling and solving sequential decision problems, following the style used by most books on machine learning, optimization, and simulation. The presentation is designed for readers with a course in probability and statistics, and an interest in modeling and applications. Linear programming is occasionally used for specific problem classes. The book is designed for readers who are new to the field, as well as those with some background in optimization under uncertainty. Throughout this book, readers will find references to over 100 different applications, spanning pure learning problems, dynamic resource allocation problems, general state-dependent problems, and hybrid learning/resource allocation problems such as those that arose in the COVID pandemic. There are 370 exercises, organized into seven groups, ranging from review questions, modeling, computation, problem solving, theory, programming exercises and a “diary problem” that a reader chooses at the beginning of the book, and which is used as a basis for questions throughout the rest of the book.

Book Low Carbon Oriented Improvement Strategy for Flexibility and Resiliency of Multi Energy Systems

Download or read book Low Carbon Oriented Improvement Strategy for Flexibility and Resiliency of Multi Energy Systems written by Yumin Zhang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-18 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the inherent volatility and randomness, the increasing share of energy from renewable resources presents a challenge to the operation of multi-energy systems with heterogeneous energy carriers such as electricity, heat, hydrogen, etc. These factors will make the systems hard to adjust their supply and demand flexibly to maintain energy balance to ensure reliability. Further, this hinders the development of a low-carbon and economically viable energy system. By making full use of the synergistic interaction of generation, transmission, load demand, and energy storage, a three-fold approach focused on quantifying demand flexibility, evaluating supply capabilities, and enhancing resilience can unlock the flexibility potential across various sectors of new energy systems. This approach provides an effective means of facilitating the transition from conventional energy systems to low-carbon, clean-energy-oriented paradigms. However, huge challenges arising from renewable energy pose great obstacles to the aforementioned solution pathway. The main objectives of this Research Topic are: 1. Develop advanced carbon emission accounting and measurement techniques for emerging multi-energy systems 2. Design effective methods for predicting renewable electricity generation 3. Proposed efficient methods for quantitative assessment of uncertainty from renewables and loads 4. Put forward advanced evaluation, optimization, and planning strategies incorporating diverse flexibility resources 5. Design multifaceted market mechanisms and collaborative frameworks balancing economics and low carbon footprint 6. Develop operational control and resilience-enhancement techniques for distribution networks under large-scale distributed energy integration

Book Stochastic Simulation Optimization

Download or read book Stochastic Simulation Optimization written by Chun-hung Chen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advance of new computing technology, simulation is becoming very popular for designing large, complex and stochastic engineering systems, since closed-form analytical solutions generally do not exist for such problems. However, the added flexibility of simulation often creates models that are computationally intractable. Moreover, to obtain a sound statistical estimate at a specified level of confidence, a large number of simulation runs (or replications) is usually required for each design alternative. If the number of design alternatives is large, the total simulation cost can be very expensive. Stochastic Simulation Optimization addresses the pertinent efficiency issue via smart allocation of computing resource in the simulation experiments for optimization, and aims to provide academic researchers and industrial practitioners with a comprehensive coverage of OCBA approach for stochastic simulation optimization. Starting with an intuitive explanation of computing budget allocation and a discussion of its impact on optimization performance, a series of OCBA approaches developed for various problems are then presented, from the selection of the best design to optimization with multiple objectives. Finally, this book discusses the potential extension of OCBA notion to different applications such as data envelopment analysis, experiments of design and rare-event simulation.

Book Advanced Analytics in Mining Engineering

Download or read book Advanced Analytics in Mining Engineering written by Ali Soofastaei and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-23 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Dr. Soofastaei and his colleagues reveal how all mining managers can effectively deploy advanced analytics in their day-to-day operations- one business decision at a time. Most mining companies have a massive amount of data at their disposal. However, they cannot use the stored data in any meaningful way. The powerful new business tool-advanced analytics enables many mining companies to aggressively leverage their data in key business decisions and processes with impressive results. From statistical analysis to machine learning and artificial intelligence, the authors show how many analytical tools can improve decisions about everything in the mine value chain, from exploration to marketing. Combining the science of advanced analytics with the mining industrial business solutions, introduce the “Advanced Analytics in Mining Engineering Book” as a practical road map and tools for unleashing the potential buried in your company’s data. The book is aimed at providing mining executives, managers, and research and development teams with an understanding of the business value and applicability of different analytic approaches and helping data analytics leads by giving them a business framework in which to assess the value, cost, and risk of potential analytical solutions. In addition, the book will provide the next generation of miners – undergraduate and graduate IT and mining engineering students – with an understanding of data analytics applied to the mining industry. By providing a book with chapters structured in line with the mining value chain, we will provide a clear, enterprise-level view of where and how advanced data analytics can best be applied. This book highlights the potential to interconnect activities in the mining enterprise better. Furthermore, the book explores the opportunities for optimization and increased productivity offered by better interoperability along the mining value chain – in line with the emerging vision of creating a digital mine with much-enhanced capabilities for modeling, simulation, and the use of digital twins – in line with leading “digital” industries.

Book Multiple Criteria Optimization

Download or read book Multiple Criteria Optimization written by Xavier Gandibleux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generalized area of multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) can be defined as the body of methods and procedures by which the concern for multiple conflicting criteria can be formally incorporated into the analytical process. MCDM consists mostly of two branches, multiple criteria optimization and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). While MCDA is typically concerned with multiple criteria problems that have a small number of alternatives often in an environment of uncertainty (location of an airport, type of drug rehabilitation program), multiple criteria optimization is typically directed at problems formulated within a mathematical programming framework, but with a stack of objectives instead of just one (river basin management, engineering component design, product distribution). It is about the most modern treatment of multiple criteria optimization that this book is concerned. I look at this book as a nicely organized and well-rounded presentation of what I view as ”new wave” topics in multiple criteria optimization. Looking back to the origins of MCDM, most people agree that it was not until about the early 1970s that multiple criteria optimization c- gealed as a field. At this time, and for about the following fifteen years, the focus was on theories of multiple objective linear programming that subsume conventional (single criterion) linear programming, algorithms for characterizing the efficient set, theoretical vector-maximum dev- opments, and interactive procedures.
