Download or read book Stochastic Optimization for Distributed Energy Resources in Smart Grids written by Yuanxiong Guo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief focuses on stochastic energy optimization for distributed energy resources in smart grids. Along with a review of drivers and recent developments towards distributed energy resources, this brief presents research challenges of integrating millions of distributed energy resources into the grid. The brief then proposes a novel three-level hierarchical architecture for effectively integrating distributed energy resources into smart grids. Under the proposed hierarchical architecture, distributed energy resource management algorithms at the three levels (i.e., smart home, smart neighborhood, and smart microgrid) are developed in this brief based on stochastic optimization that can handle the involved uncertainties in the system.

Book Stochastic and Robust Optimal Operation of Energy efficient Building with Combined Heat and Power Systems

Download or read book Stochastic and Robust Optimal Operation of Energy efficient Building with Combined Heat and Power Systems written by Ping Liu and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy efficiency and renewable energy become more attractive in smart grid. In order to efficiently reduce global energy usage in building energy systems and to improve local environmental sustainability, it is essential to optimize the operation and the performance of combined heat and power (CHP) systems. In addition, intermittent renewable energy and imprecisely predicted customer loads have introduced great challenges in energy-efficient buildings' optimal operation. In the deterministic optimal operation, we study the modeling of components in building energy systems, including the power grid interface, CHP and boiler units, energy storage devices, and appliances. The mixed energy resources are applied to collaboratively supply both electric and thermal loads. The results show that CHP can effectively improve overall energy efficiency by coordinating electric and thermal power supplies. Through the optimal operation of all power sources, the daily operation cost of building energy system for generating energy can be significantly reduced. In order to address the risk due to energy consumption and renewable energy production volatility, we conduct studies on both stochastic programming and robust optimizations to operate energy-efficient building systems under uncertainty. The multistage stochastic programming model is introduced so that the reliable operation of building energy systems would be probabilistically guaranteed with stochastic decisions. The simulation results show that the stochastic operation of building systems is a promising strategy to account for the impact of uncertainties on power dispatch decisions of energy-efficient buildings. In order to provide absolute guarantee for the reliable operation of building energy systems, a robust energy supply to electric and thermal loads is studied by exploring the influence of energy storage on energy supply and accounting for uncertainties in the energy-efficient building. The robustness can be adjusted to control the conservativeness of the proposed robust operation model. For the purpose of achieving adaptability in the robust optimal operation and attaining robustness in the stochastic optimal operation of building energy systems, we also develop an innovative robust stochastic optimization (RSO) model. The proposed RSO model not only overcomes the conservativeness in the robust operation model, but also circumvents the curse of dimensionality in the stochastic operation model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Special Issue Distributed Energy Resources Management 2018 includes 13 papers, and is a continuation of the Special Issue Distributed Energy Resources Management. The success of the previous edition shows the unquestionable relevance of distributed energy resources in the operation of power and energy systems at both the distribution level and at the wider power system level. Improving the management of distributed energy resources makes it possible to accommodate the higher penetration of intermittent distributed generation and electric vehicle charging. Demand response programs, namely the ones with a distributed nature, allow the consumers to contribute to the increased system efficiency while receiving benefits. This book addresses the management of distributed energy resources, with a focus on methods and techniques to achieve an optimized operation, in order to aggregate the resources namely in the scope of virtual power players and other types of aggregators, and to remunerate them. The integration of distributed resources in electricity markets is also addressed as an enabler for their increased and efficient use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical Postprocessing of Ensemble Forecasts brings together chapters contributed by international subject-matter experts describing the current state of the art in the statistical postprocessing of ensemble forecasts. The book illustrates the use of these methods in several important applications including weather, hydrological and climate forecasts, and renewable energy forecasting. After an introductory section on ensemble forecasts and prediction systems, the second section of the book is devoted to exposition of the methods available for statistical postprocessing of ensemble forecasts: univariate and multivariate ensemble postprocessing are first reviewed by Wilks (Chapters 3), then Schefzik and Möller (Chapter 4), and the more specialized perspective necessary for postprocessing forecasts for extremes is presented by Friederichs, Wahl, and Buschow (Chapter 5). The second section concludes with a discussion of forecast verification methods devised specifically for evaluation of ensemble forecasts (Chapter 6 by Thorarinsdottir and Schuhen). The third section of this book is devoted to applications of ensemble postprocessing. Practical aspects of ensemble postprocessing are first detailed in Chapter 7 (Hamill), including an extended and illustrative case study. Chapters 8 (Hemri), 9 (Pinson and Messner), and 10 (Van Schaeybroeck and Vannitsem) discuss ensemble postprocessing specifically for hydrological applications, postprocessing in support of renewable energy applications, and postprocessing of long-range forecasts from months to decades. Finally, Chapter 11 (Messner) provides a guide to the ensemble-postprocessing software available in the R programming language, which should greatly help readers implement many of the ideas presented in this book. Edited by three experts with strong and complementary expertise in statistical postprocessing of ensemble forecasts, this book assesses the new and rapidly developing field of ensemble forecast postprocessing as an extension of the use of statistical corrections to traditional deterministic forecasts. Book Stochastic Optimization for Integrated Energy System with Reliability Improvement Using Decomposition Algorithm

Download or read book Stochastic Optimization for Integrated Energy System with Reliability Improvement Using Decomposition Algorithm written by Yuping Huang and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With strong support of NG and electric facilities, the second strategy provides an optimal day-ahead scheduling for electric power generation system incorporating with non-generation resources, i.e. demand response and energy storage. Because of risk aversion, this generation scheduling enables a power system qualified with higher reliability and promotes non-generation resources in smart grid. To take advantage of power generation sources, the third strategy strengthens the change of the traditional energy reserve requirements to risk constraints but ensuring the same level of systems reliability. In this way we can maximize the use of existing resources to accommodate internal or/and external changes in power system. All problems are formulated by stochastic mixed integer programming, particularly considering the uncertainties from fuel price, renewable energy output and electricity demand over time. Taking the benefit of models structure, new decomposition strategies are proposed to decompose the stochastic unit commitment problems which are then solved by an enhanced Benders Decomposition algorithm. Compared to the classic Benders Decomposition, this proposed solution approach is able to increase convergence speed and thus reduce 25% of computation times on the same cases.

Book Stochastic Optimization and Its Application to Communication Networks and the Smart Grid

Download or read book Stochastic Optimization and Its Application to Communication Networks and the Smart Grid written by Zongrui Ding and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chapter 4, we study the capacity region and the dynamic stabilizing control policy for the PL queueing networks with time-varying channels. Based on the Lyapunov drift method, we propose a dynamic routing and power control policy, i.e. DRPC-PL, which stabilizes the network whenever the input rate is within the capacity region of the PL queueing network. The Smart Grid system is a future vision of the electric power system, which features interaction and communication among grid components, adaptation of renewable energy and reliability/self-healing, etc. In Chapter 5, we consider the integration of stochastic wind power generation in the Smart Grid under renewable portfolio standard (RPS) with deep wind penetration. For small-scale utilities installed with wind turbines and acting as distributed energy resources (DERs), wind energy can be potentially integrated to satisfy customer power demand or enter energy market. To exploit the temporal variation of system status and real-time electricity market, we propose a theoretical framework to dynamically determine the role of wind energy and provide long-term RPS guarantee. This approach yields a simple dynamic thresholding control under the assumption of system ergodicity, which maximizes the expected profit of the utility and is easy to be implemented online.

Book Stochastic Modeling for Resiliency in Residential Energy Systems

Download or read book Stochastic Modeling for Resiliency in Residential Energy Systems written by Rachel G Hunter-Rinderle and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residential power outages leave occupants in the dark. System resiliency can be advanced by equipping residents with the ability to respond in the event of an electricity service disruption. This thesis applies stochastic optimization to household control by scheduling the use of a lithium-ion battery to partially serve uncertain demand as power outages occur. A method is proposed to model power outages as a DTMC using published reliability indices and residential power demand is modeled using published methods. Three weighting scales for the penalties on unsatisfied demand are tested in a case study with the main goal of calibrating a penalty vector such that the model appropriately balances demand for low and high priority activities over the course of the outage of probabilistic length. Results achieved here may be myopic, suggesting further tuning of penalties may be necessary.

Book Zone distributed Optimization System for Energy Management in Smart Grids

Download or read book Zone distributed Optimization System for Energy Management in Smart Grids written by Jamal Busnaina and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy management system (EMS) is an important component of smart grid operation. A proper EMS is the key to the integration of smart grid (SG) features, which include two-way communication, smart metering as well advanced control algorithms, in order to operate different components of SG efficiently and constructively. EMSs are both applied on the entity's and the system's level. On the entity level, individual entities don't coordinate with the system operator to optimize the objectives globally which would lead to inefficient solutions. System level EMS is implemented using centralized and decentralized approaches. Some of crucial drawbacks of the centralized EMS approach are that it's incapable of considering customer preferences while optimizing the operation of the networks, in addition to the lack of flexibility and scalability. Nevertheless, in the decentralized EMS approach, the customers and the system operator share information and interact constructively in optimizing their objectives. However, this approach still requires central coordination and long back-forth process to converge, as there is no shared background of mathematical foundation. In addition to that, most of the proposed decentralized techniques, do not consider network constraints, especially for unbalanced systems. This thesis proposes a Zone-Distributed Optimization System (ZDOS) using distributed semi-definite programming for energy management of a SG. ZDOS divides distribution systems into numerous micro grid-like regions, or zones, to facilitate smart grid operation. The proposed ZDOS divides the grid into a number of Zone-Specific Optimization Subsystem (ZSOS), each responsible for controlling and managing the activities inside a zone. The ZDOS clusters the distribution system based on the customer-class (residential, commercial and industrial). Each class is controlled by ZSOS in order to optimize a certain objective function, as well as a set of constraints which are consistent with customer's nature, preferences, requirements and the applied Demand Response (DR) strategy. Furthermore, ZSOS's of connected zones exchange local information at the point of connectivity indicating the desired power exchange and voltage level until the iterative process of every ZSOS is satisfied. Simulations and analysis are conducted on a modified 123-IEEE test system, which include diesel generators, renewable energy resources, and energy storage systems. The system is tested under different scenarios and demand response strategies. The analysis has shown that the results obtained by ZDOS are valid as the supply and demand are always balanced. Furthermore, the performance of ZDOS for minimizing operational costs has significantly improved when applying the DR, compared to ZDOS results without DR. The effectiveness of a multi-objective ZDOS when taking into consideration the preferences and requirements of different customers has been proven.
