Book Thermodynamics and Gas Dynamics of the Stirling Cycle Machine

Download or read book Thermodynamics and Gas Dynamics of the Stirling Cycle Machine written by Allan J. Organ and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-08-20 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1992 book provides a coherent and comprehensive treatment of the thermodynamics and gas dynamics of the practical Stirling cycle. Invented in 1816, the Stirling engine is the subject of worldwide research and development on account of unique qualities - silence, indifference to heat source, low level of emissions when burning conventional fuels and an ability to function in reverse as heat pump or refrigerator. The student of engineering will discover an instructure and illuminating case study revealing the interactions of basic disciplines. The researcher will find the groundwork prepared for various types of computer simulation, Those involved in the use and teaching of solution methods for unsteady gas dynamics problems will find a comprehensive treatment on nonlinear and linear wave approaches, for the Stirling machine provides an elegant example of the application of each. The book will be of use to all those involved in researching, designing or manufacturing Stirling prime movers, coolers and related regenerative thermal machines.

Book excerpt: Amidst tightening requirements for eliminating CFC's, HCFC's, halons, and HFC's from use in air conditioning and heat pumps, the search began for replacements that are environmentally benign, non-flammable, and similar to the banned refrigerants in system-level behavior. Refrigerant mixtures are increasingly used as working fluids because they demo

Book Heat Pumps for the Home

Download or read book Heat Pumps for the Home written by John Cantor and published by Crowood. This book was released on 2013-06-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, heat pumps have emerged as a promising new form of technology with a relatively low environmental impact. Moreover, they have presented householders with an opportunity to reduce their heating bills. Heat pumps can heat a building by 'pumping' heat from either the ground or the air outside: an intriguing process which utilizes principles that are somewhat analogous to those employed in the domestic refrigerator. Armed with the practical information contained in these pages, homeowners will have the necessary knowledge to take advantage of this potentially low-carbon technology to heat their properties.Describes what a heat pump is, how it works, the different methods of pumping heat and the importance of an appropriate and well-planned installation. Examines the air, the ground and water as sources of heat and explains how to make an informed choice. Considers the all-important subject of distributing the heat through radiators or through an under-floor system. Covers hot water production and delivery to the taps. Outlines environmental and financial issues associated with heat pumps. Dispels some common misconceptions and presents a number of case studies. Essential reading for all those householders who are considering installing heat pumps in order to heat their homes in a more eco-friendly and efficient way. Aimed at those homeowners who wish to do some of the work themselves or who wish to shadow sub-contractors. A useful reference tool for architects, plumbers, heating engineers, builders and students. Superbly illustrated with 155 colour photographs and diagrams by Gavin D J Harper. John Cantor is a heat pump engineer, inspector and consultant and has written many articles on the subject. Gavin D J Harper is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Book Free Piston Stirling Engines

Download or read book Free Piston Stirling Engines written by Graham Walker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DEFINITION AND NOMENCLATURE A Stirling engine is a mechanical device which operates on a closed regenerative thermodynamic cycle with cyclic compression and expansion of the working fluid at different temperature levels. The flow of working fluid is controlled only by the internal volume changes, there are no valves and, overall, there is a net conversion of heat to work or vice-versa. This generalized definition embraces a large family of machines with different functions; characteristics and configurations. It includes both rotary and reciprocating systems utilizing mechanisms of varying complexity. It covers machines capable of operating as a prime mover or power system converting heat supplied at high tempera ture to output work and waste heat at a lower temperature. It also covers work-consuming machines used as refrigerating systems and heat pumps abstracting heat from a low temperature source and delivering this plus the heat equivalent of the work consumed to a higher tem perature. Finally it covers work-consuming devices used as pressure generators compressing a fluid from a low pressure to a higher pres sure. Very similar machines exist which operate on an open regen erative cycle where the flow of working fluid is controlled by valves. For convenience these may be called Ericsson engines but unfortunate ly the distinction is not widely established and regenerative machines of both types are frequently called 'Stirling engines'.

  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Heat Pumps written by Kazimierz Brodowicz and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1993 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat pumps and related technology are in widespread use in industrial processes and installations. This book presents a unified, comprehensive and systematic treatment of the design and operation of both compression and sorption heat pumps. Heat pump thermodynamics, the choice of working fluid and the characteristics of low temperature heat sources and their application to heat pumps are covered in detail.Economic aspects are discussed and the extensive use of the exergy concept in evaluating performance of heat pumps is a unique feature of the book. The thermodynamic and chemical properties of certain new working fluids and sorbents are also explored. There are considerable pressures on those involved in the use of heat pumps to achieve energy savings and this presents a challenging task in today's industrial climate. This book provides many examples of such energy savings such as the use of large heat pump units utilising various low temperature industrial waste heat sources. Heat Pumps is illustrated throughout by specific solutions as applied worldwide. The subject area is approached logically, covering both design and calculation methods, and is oriented towards the needs of the process user. The treatment given to the selection of working fluids should be compulsory reading. - Chemical Engineer, June 1994
