Book Sting in the Tale

    Book Details:
  • Author : Antoinette LaFarge
  • Publisher : Doppelhouse Press
  • Release : 2021-08-19
  • ISBN : 9781733957953
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Sting in the Tale written by Antoinette LaFarge and published by Doppelhouse Press. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated survey of artist hoaxes, including impersonations, fabula, cryptoscience, and forgeries, researched and written by an expert "fictive-art" practitioner. The shift from the early information age to our 'infocalypse' era of rampant misinformation has given rise to an art form that probes this confusion, foregrounding wild creativity as a way to reframe assumptions about both fiction and art in contemporary culture. At its center, this "fictive art" (LaFarge's term) is secured as fact by employing the language and display methods of history and science. Using typically evidentiary objects such as documentary photographs and videos, presumptively historical artifacts and relics, didactics, lectures, events, and expert opinions in technical language, artists create a constellation of manufactured evidence attesting to the artwork's central narrative. This dissimulation is temporary, with a clear "tell" often surprisingly revealed in a self-outing moment. With all its attendant consequences of mistrust, outrage, and rejection, this genre of art with a sting in its tale is a radical form whose time has come.

Book Sting and Religion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Evyatar Marienberg
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2021-01-06
  • ISBN : 1725272261
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Sting and Religion written by Evyatar Marienberg and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the back cover of one of his most groundbreaking solo albums, . . . Nothing like the Sun of 1987, Sting (Gordon Matthew Sumner, b. 1951 in Wallsend, UK) somberly stands close to a statue of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The album was released a few months after his own mother, Audrey, died. The picture was taken on the island of Montserrat, where he was recording the album, apparently on the day of her death. “I said goodbye to my mother, as I had a recording date in Montserrat, and she died a week later.” When asked by the author if his mother was particularly connected to Mary, and if this was why he chose this image, he replied “No, but I did.” This evocative photograph and Sting’s quick answer encapsulate the two pillars of this book: a microhistory of a specific British Catholic parish in the 1950s–60s, and the impact that growing up there had on Sting’s artistic output. And beyond that, this book opens a window onto the influence of Catholic education and imagination on millions of less famous people who had similar upbringings.

Book Bilingualism and Deafness

Download or read book Bilingualism and Deafness written by Carolina Plaza-Pust and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines sociolinguistic, educational and psycholinguistic factors that shape the path to sign bilingualism in deaf individuals and contributes to a better understanding of the specific characteristics of a type of bilingualism that is neither territorial nor commonly the result of parent-to-child transmission. The evolution of sign bilingualism at the individual level is discussed from a developmental linguistics perspective on the basis of a longitudinal investigation of deaf learners' bilingual acquisition of German sign language (DGS) and German. The case studies included in this volume offer unique insights into bilingual deaf learners’ sign language and written language productions, and the sophisticated nature of the bilingual competence they attain. Commonalities and differences between sign bilingual language development in deaf learners and language development in other language acquisition scenarios are identified on the basis of a dynamic model of change in the evolution of (learner) language, with a focus on the role of language contact in the organisation of multilingual knowledge and the scope of inter- and intra-individual variation in learner grammars. In many respects, as becomes apparent throughout the chapters of this work, sign bilingualism represents not only a challenge but also a resource. Given this cross-disciplinary perspective, the insights on bilingualism and deafness in this volume will be of interest to a wide range of researchers and professionals.
