Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stikine River Route to the Klondike: Shortest, Safest, Quickest and Best The high mountain ranges of South-eastern Alaska which barricade approach from the Pacific to the head waters of the Yukon, crossing at their lowest passes near Dyea and Skaguay being attended with hardships and loss of property and life, are nowhere opened for a practicable route of travel inland at sea-level except at the canons of the Stikine River. Along this line the travel is through instead of Over the mountains, and sitting instead of Walking - resting comfortably in chair and bed instead of toiling on foot up steep acclivities and floundering in mire and among sharp rocks and death holes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of British Columbia's transportation systems north of the Canadian National Railway's mainline may not be well known—but it certainly is colourful. Continuing the story he began in the first volume of Carving the Western Path, R.G. Harvey describes the development of river, road and rail routes that crossed the northern two-thirds of BC. This was a land of dreams and schemes that seemed to feed on each other. It started with the Collins Overland Telegraph, a communication link that was to connect Europe and America in the 1860s. Though this plan collapsed with the success of the trans-Atlantic cable, the telegraph surveyors established patterns for future roads and settlement. They also sparked the Omineca gold rush. It was a land full of larger-than-life characters, including: Charles Hays, who dreamed of a major seaport at Prince Rupert but died on the Titanic before he could realize his vision Charles Bedaux, who in the 1930s carved his 416-mile path into the northern Rockies Railway promoters Warburton Pike, Sir Edward Phillipps-Wolley, William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, who got gifts of land and money but couldn't always meet their promises. Their stories mingle with those of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the Alaska Highway, the White Pass and Yukon Railway and those of the sternwheelers, fur traders, gold miners and other adventurers who were drawn to this last frontier.

Book The Forgotten Trail

Download or read book The Forgotten Trail written by Larry Pynn and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few events loom larger in Canadian history than the Klondike Gold Rush. The most famous path to the gold fields- through Dyea in Alaska, over the Chilkoot Pass, down the Yukon by boat- was by no means the only route travelled by gold seekers. Of the several Canadian gateways to the Klondike, the Stikine route was the most heavily used, but, ironically, the least known and least written about. It involved a gruelling trip up the Stikine River by boat or ice sled as far as the communities of Glenora and Telegraph Creek, then overland by horseback or foot to Teslin Lake, and finally by canoe down the Teslin and Yukon Rivers to Dawson. Intrigued by what evidence of the gold rush still lingered on this century-old trail, Vancouver Sun journalist Larry Pynn set out to retrace the route during the summer of 1992. For six weeks he trekked 1,500 kilometres- on foot, horseback and by canoe. Along the way, Pynn encountered some of Canada's most rugged and beautiful terrain. He also discovered many relics- a wooden telegraph pole teetering in the distance, the skeletal remains of a line cabin- from the long-vanished gold rush era. And there's a cast of colourful characters, from back-to-the-landers and commercial fishermen to miners operating a modern-day gold mine and pilots involved in a daring search-and-rescue of the author himself. A dramatic, modern-day adventure, The Forgotten Trail is a fascinating and entertaining story of Canada's gold rush history.

Book Wrangell

  • Author : Bonnie Demerjian
  • Publisher : Arcadia Publishing
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 9780738574981
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Wrangell written by Bonnie Demerjian and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wrangell is named after Baron Ferdinand von Wrangell of the Russian American Company, who was charged with extending Russia's fur trade into Southeast Alaska. To that end, he ordered a fort to be established in 1833, on Wrangell Island near the mouth of the Stikine River. The Stikine Tlingit Indians, who were scattered in villages nearby, moved closer to take advantage of fur trading opportunities. In 1839, the fort passed into the hands of the British Hudson's Bay Company. With the purchase of Alaska in 1867, the need was urgent to enforce the United States' presence in its recently acquired territory. An American fort was built, which the US Army occupied during a series of gold rushes, ending with the Klondike Rush in 1898. Wrangell began to grow beyond its boom-and-bust origins during the 20th century, becoming a thriving hub for lumber, fishing, and mining, as well as the newly minted tourist industry.

Book Wires in the Wilderness

Download or read book Wires in the Wilderness written by Bill Miller and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2004 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the tale of how Canada's high northern wilderness was brought into civilization's fold through a frail network of wires laboriously strung between poles and trees for hundreds of desolate miles. The Yukon Telegraph started in 1897, when gold was discovered in the Yukon and the government needed a faster way to communicate with its remote northern territory. The isolated residents, too, wanted a more reliable connection with the outside world. Bill Miller takes readers from the line's conception in 1899 to its abandonment in 1952 through to its status today and its potential for future generations, focusing on the colourful people who lived and worked in the area. His account, enhanced by extensive research and engaging storytelling, reveals a fascinating fragment of Canada's rich history.

Download or read book Rivers of the World written by James Penn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-12-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rivers of the World, vividly written and meticulously researched, is a rich and thorough treatment of some 200 of the world's rivers. In this comprehensive treatment of the major rivers of the world, author James R. Penn's purpose is not just to feature geographic data, but to tell a story of historical drama, poetic significance, and cultural relationships. The book shows glimpses of Chairman Mao boosting his image by swimming in the Yangtze; Indian middlemen residing on both sides of the Columbia River exacting tolls from travelers like Lewis and Clark; and, near the Dordogne in southwest France, Paleolithic cave art, paintings, and designs in rock shelters and subterranean caverns, which are textbook examples of early human creativity and artistic impulse. In nearly 200 entries ranging from a few paragraphs to several pages, Rivers of the World covers all of the great rivers of the world including the Nile, Niger, Amazon, and Mississippi, as well as smaller waterways that illustrate important themes or represent trends. The book includes bibliographies for each river.
