Book Stewart of Lovedale

Download or read book Stewart of Lovedale written by James Wells and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stewart of Lovedale: The Life of James Stewart, D. D., M. D., Hon. F. R. G. S This book might have been fitly entitled The Life and Times of Dr, Stewart, for it records his influential share in the enterprises which have made a new world of South and Central Africa. Several of the chapters are occupied with the great causes which Dr. Stewart espoused; and they present his chief convictions in the form that seemed most likely to interest the many circles of young people in Great Britain and America who are now studying Foreign Missions. My heartiest thanks are due to many helpers, foremost among whom are Mrs. Stewart and John Stephen, Esq. I wish I could thank them all, one by one. I have drawn freely on the admirable In Memoriant number of the Christian Express, which was edited, and to a large extent written, by Dr. Roberts of Lovedale. The Rev. J. M. Sloan, M.A., and Sir. A. R. Simpson, M.D., have revised the proofs and made many helpful suggestions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Missionary Work in Africa in Eug ne Casalis s Time and Beyond

Download or read book Missionary Work in Africa in Eug ne Casalis s Time and Beyond written by Jamary Molumeli and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British influence on what was to become the British Empire and French influence on French speaking Africa have been extensively explored so far, but few books focus on French missions in Britain’s sphere of influence. The French missionary Eugène Casalis represents a perhaps unique experience of a man taking part in the nation-building process in an African country, Lesotho, which belonged to London’s ‘reserve’. Casalis was to become the King’s special advisor and is still hailed today as one of the few men who built the country. Based on the research of a dozen African and European academics who convened in Morija in 2012 to commemorate the bicentenary of that great Protestant humanist and to analyse “Missionary Work in Africa in Eugene Casalis’s Time and Beyond”, this book will provide fresh and stimulating material for readers interested in colonial and post-colonial studies, missions and religion, and cultural and historical exchanges between the Southern part of the African continent and Great Britain.

Book Children of Hope

  • Author : Sandra Rowoldt Shell
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press
  • Release : 2018-08-20
  • ISBN : 0821446320
  • Pages : 564 pages

Download or read book Children of Hope written by Sandra Rowoldt Shell and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Children of Hope, Sandra Rowoldt Shell traces the lives of sixty-four Oromo children who were enslaved in Ethiopia in the late-nineteenth century, liberated by the British navy, and ultimately sent to Lovedale Institution, a Free Church of Scotland mission in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, for their safety. Because Scottish missionaries in Yemen interviewed each of the Oromo children shortly after their liberation, we have sixty-four structured life histories told by the children themselves. In the historiography of slavery and the slave trade, first passage narratives are rare, groups of such narratives even more so. In this analytical group biography (or prosopography), Shell renders the experiences of the captives in detail and context that are all the more affecting for their dispassionate presentation. Comparing the children by gender, age, place of origin, method of capture, identity, and other characteristics, Shell enables new insights unlike anything in the existing literature for this region and period. Children of Hope is supplemented by graphs, maps, and illustrations that carefully detail the demographic and geographic layers of the children’s origins and lives after capture. In this way, Shell honors the individual stories of each child while also placing them into invaluable and multifaceted contexts.

Book The colonisation of time

    Book Details:
  • Author : Giordano Nanni
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2020-10-20
  • ISBN : 1526118408
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book The colonisation of time written by Giordano Nanni and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colonisation of Time is a highly original and long overdue examination of the ways that western-European and specifically British concepts and rituals of time were imposed on other cultures as a fundamental component of colonisation during the nineteenth century. Based on a wealth of primary sources, it explores the intimate relationship between the colonisation of time and space in two British settler-colonies (Victoria, Australia and the Cape Colony, South Africa) and its instrumental role in the exportation of Christianity, capitalism, and modernity, thus adding new depth to our understanding of imperial power and of the ways in which it was exercised and limited. All those intrigued by the concept of time will find this book of interest, for it illustrates how western-European time’s rise to a position of global dominance—from the clock to the seven-day week—is one of the most pervasive, enduring and taken-for-granted legacies of colonisation in today’s world.
