Book Emergence of Irish Gothic Fiction

Download or read book Emergence of Irish Gothic Fiction written by Jarlath Killeen and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a new account of the emergence of Irish gothic fiction in mid-eighteenth century This book provides a robustly theorised and thoroughly historicised account of the 'beginnings' of Irish gothic fiction, maps the theoretical terrain covered by other critics, and puts forward a new history of the emergence of the genre in Ireland. The main argument the book makes is that the Irish gothic should be read in the context of the split in Irish Anglican public opinion that opened in the 1750s, and seen as a fictional instrument of liberal Anglican opinion in a changing political landscape. By providing a fully historicized account of the beginnings of the genre in Ireland, the book also addresses the theoretical controversies that have bedevilled discussion of the Irish gothic in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. The book gives ample space to the critical debate, and rigorously defends a reading of the Irish gothic as an Anglican, Patriot tradition. This reading demonstrates the connections between little-known Irish gothic fictions of the mid-eighteenth century (The Adventures of Miss Sophia Berkley and Longsword), and the Irish gothic tradition more generally, and also the gothic as a genre of global significance.

Book Gothic Ireland

Download or read book Gothic Ireland written by Jarlath Killeen and published by Four Courts Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the formation of Anglican identity in Ireland throughout the long, 18th century. Beginning with the 1641 Rebellion, which constitutes the inaugurating event of Anglican Ireland, the book traces the convolutions of this identity through to the Act of Union in 1801. It argues that Gothicism is the basic modality in which Anglican Ireland found expression, and traces the themes and modes of Gothic writing in political tracts, philosophical pamphlets, graveyard poetry, aesthetic treatises, and Gothic novels. In linking these diffuse modes of writing through their common recourse to a Gothic language, this book produces a psycho-history of the Anglican mind.

Book My Dear Hugh

Download or read book My Dear Hugh written by Tim Heald and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Cobb was one of the most distinguished British historians of the twentieth century. A professor at Oxford, a multiple prize-winner, author of numerous books and innumerable essays and reviews, he was proudest of all to be described as a Parisian. He was unconventional, anarchic and almost impossibly erudite. Somehow he managed in the course of a life of apparently unremitting grandeur to write letters. They were scratchy, iconoclastic, funny, indiscreet, vivid, fluent, and occasionally brilliant set-pieces of descriptive or historical reporting. The sight of one of his ill-typed missives in a blue Basildon Bond envelope was always a promise of pleasure, and usually of instruction, frequently an invitation to a feast of scurrilous gossip, and an excuse to put off day-to-day concerns for a while. He wrote about politicians, the royal family, fellow academics and journalists, and, of course, mutual friends. The complete letters would fill many volumes, but here is a selection of the best, made by Tim Heald, who was taught by Cobb at university, and corresponded with him intermittently for the next thirty years.

Book Moon Face and Other Stories

Download or read book Moon Face and Other Stories written by Jack London and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’ve all taken a dislike to someone for no real reason. But few of us nurture this hatred like the narrator of "Moon-Face". The target of his irrational malice is a man named John Claverhouse. With cold precision, the narrator sets to planning the man’s downfall. Why he has this urge, he can’t explain. But he knows he’ll feel immense satisfaction when John Claverhouse is made to suffer. In this macabre little tale, Jack London pinpoints a very common but unpleasant human trait. And then takes it to a horrifying extreme. This short story collection also includes "All Gold Canyon", which was adapted as part of the Netflix anthology movie "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs". Jack London (1876–1916) was one of the first American writers to achieve worldwide celebrity. He did so with rugged adventure stories set in forbidding landscapes. And heroes who survive by embracing their most primal instincts. His breakthrough best seller was "The Call of the Wild". Inspired by his time in the Klondike Gold Rush, this hard-hitting novel is told from the perspective of a sled dog named Buck. It’s inspired many adaptations, including a big-budget movie starring Harrison Ford. Among London’s other notable works are "White Fang", also featuring a canine protagonist, as well as "The Sea-Wolf", "Martin Eden" and "The Iron Heel".
