Book Comprehensive Natural Products Chemistry Isoprenoids including carotenoids and steroids

Download or read book Comprehensive Natural Products Chemistry Isoprenoids including carotenoids and steroids written by Derek H. R. Barton and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1999 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. This volume covers the dramatic advances which have been made in the lasttwo decades in the understanding of isoprenoid biosynthesis at thechemical, biochemical, and molecular genetic level. Tens of thousands ofisoprenoid metabolites - from pinenes to cholesterol, from ubiquinone tocarotene, from phytols to prenylated proteins, from dolichols togibberellins - have been isolated from essentially all forms of life, including prokaryotes, eukaryotes, and archaebacteria: from Escherichiacoli to mammals, from extremophiles and fungi to marine and terrestrialplants. All of these isoprenoids can be derived from a single, five-carbonacyclic precursor, isopentenyl diphosphate. Early chapters in this Volumedetail the key findings that have led to an understanding of the metabolicpathways leading to isopentenyl diphosphate, including both the classicalroute involving mevalonic acid as well as the recently discoveredpyruvate-triose phosphat

Book Novel Oxidoreductases for Steroid Reduction

Download or read book Novel Oxidoreductases for Steroid Reduction written by Anandsukeerthi Sandholu and published by . This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, enzymes have been recognized as powerful tools for the synthesis and modification of steroids and isoprenoids. This has led to an increasing interest in the study of novel oxidoreductases that are specific to these molecules. In this regard, Anandsukeerthi Sandholu has conducted extensive research on the identification, purification, and characterization of such enzymes. Oxidoreductases are a class of enzymes that catalyze the transfer of electrons from one molecule to another. They play an important role in the reduction of steroids and isoprenoids by selectively catalyzing the oxidation or reduction of specific functional groups. Sandholu's work has focused on understanding the specificity, structure, and function of these enzymes. One of the key aspects of Sandholu's research has been the identification and isolation of novel oxidoreductases from microorganisms. By screening a large number of microorganisms, Sandholu has been able to identify several promising candidates for further study. These enzymes have been purified and characterized, and their substrate specificity has been determined. Sandholu has also studied the structural and functional properties of these enzymes using a variety of techniques such as X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and enzyme kinetics. These studies have provided insights into the mechanisms by which these enzymes catalyze the reduction of steroids and isoprenoids. Sandholu's work has important implications for the biocatalytic synthesis of steroids and isoprenoids. Enzymes are increasingly being used as biocatalysts in the production of these molecules, and the identification and characterization of novel oxidoreductases with specificities for different functional groups will enable the development of more efficient and selective biocatalytic processes. In conclusion, Anandsukeerthi Sandholu's research on novel oxidoreductases for steroid reduction has contributed significantly to our understanding of these enzymes and their role in the biocatalytic synthesis of steroids and isoprenoids. Her work has important implications for the development of more efficient and selective biocatalytic processes in the future.

Book The Biology of Cholesterol and Related Steroids

Download or read book The Biology of Cholesterol and Related Steroids written by N. B. Myant and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 925 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biology of Cholesterol and Related Steroids focuses on the study of sterols in relation to living organisms. The publication first takes a look at the analysis of sterols and related steroids and the distribution of sterols and related steroids in nature, as well as the processes of extraction and separation and presence of sterols in plants, fungi, vertebrates, and invertebrates. The text then ponders on biosynthesis of sterols and metabolism of cholesterol. Topics include formation of fatty acid esters of cholesterol, steroid hormones, biosynthetic pathway to sterols, reaction mechanisms, and comparative aspects of sterol synthesis. The manuscript examines the developmental aspects of cholesterol metabolism and sterols in biological membranes. The book also reviews cholesterol synthesis in animal tissues, sterol metabolism in isolated cells, and epidemiology of the plasma cholesterol. Discussions focus on selection of statistical populations, genetic influences, regulation of sterol synthesis, general aspects of sterol metabolism, and removal of cell cholesterol in vivo. The publication is a dependable source of data for biochemists and readers interested in the biology of cholesterol and steroids.

Book Medicinal Plant Research in Africa

Download or read book Medicinal Plant Research in Africa written by Victor Kuete and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 917 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pharmacopoeias of most African countries are available and contain an impressive number of medicinal plants used for various therapeutic purposes. Many African scholars have distinguished themselves in the fields of organic chemistry, pharmacology, and pharmacognosy and other areas related to the study of plant medicinal plants. However, until now, there is no global standard book on the nature and specificity of chemicals isolated in African medicinal plants, as well as a book bringing together and discussing the main bioactive metabolites of these plants. This book explores the essence of natural substances from African medicinal plants and their pharmacological potential. In light of possible academic use, this book also scans the bulk of African medicinal plants extract having promising pharmacological activities. The book contains data of biologically active plants of Africa, plant occurring compounds and synthesis pathways of secondary metabolites This book explores the essence of natural substances from African medicinal plants and their pharmacological potential The authors are world reknowned African Scientists
