Book Supplement and steroid use among male teenagers

Download or read book Supplement and steroid use among male teenagers written by Gary Elliott and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Sport - Sport Medicine, Therapy, Nutrition, ( Atlantic International University ), language: English, abstract: In any paper revolving around teenagers and their use of ‘mass building’ supplements it is important to note that the use of supplements to build mass and the use of steroids are not mutually exclusive. Many authors of works on body image and steroid use believe that they are inextricably linked. It is debatable as to whether the use of over-the-counter supplements are a ‘gateway’ to the use of more damaging steroids but the overwhelming feeling confirms that the risk is increased when teenagers begin to take supplements. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Youth Risk Behaviour Surveillance- United States, reports that the percentage of students using steroids increased to 6,1% by 2002. The common belief that ‘supplements’ are not potentially dangerous has resulted in a limited amount of information about youths (of school-going age) and their ‘supplement use’ habits. As such, the preliminary information in this paper will focus on the prevalence of steroid use among males. The National Centre for Education Statistics estimated that in 2005, of “16,5 million some 5,4% of the public and private school children between” the ages of 14-17 years (660 000 children) had used or were using steroids. In Body Dysmorphic Disorder in Men, Phillips indicates that between 6 and “7% of high school boys have used these drugs” (Phillips: 2001). Adolescent anabolic steroid use is a nationwide phenomenon with “prevalence rates among high school males [ranging] from 5-11%”, with high school athletes continuing to use these agents to improve their athletic performance and appearance despite the associated risks (Proctor: 1998). In addition, it is reported that school children begin using anabolic steroids before the age of 16 years and up to 86% of these students have no intention to cease their use of these illegal drugs. In light of these statistics, in any attempt to reduce the associated health risks of steroid use/abuse, it is imperative that implementation programmes to that effect are introduced into the school curriculum at the very latest in junior high. “Performance enhancing drugs” have been around for centuries; the ancient Greeks used “strychnine and hallucinogenic mushrooms” in preparation for the original Olympic Games; years later (1886), the first athlete died from using performance-enhancing drugs (Luciano: 2001, 175)...

Book The Adonis Complex

Download or read book The Adonis Complex written by Harrison Pope and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2000 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing numbers of young men are taking the quest for perfect muscles, skin and hair too far, crossing the line from normal interest to pathological obsession. For the first time, three of the world's leading authorities on men help us to understand and combat the frightening set of compulsive behaviours that make up the Adonis Complex. Combining colourful case studies with scientific research, they reveal a threat that is as serious as the beauty myth for women or anorexia nervosa for girls. The symptoms of this dangerous body obsession, excessive workouts, steroid abuse, eating disorders and body and muscle dysmorphic disorder (distorted body perception), lead to problems with sex and intimacy, relationships and work. In teenagers, the Adonis Complex can interfere with healthy emotional and physical development. Until now, frank discussion of this problem has been virtually taboo. At last we can hear what men really think and feel about their bodies, so that those who suffer in silence will no longer need to suffer alone.

Book Steroids

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeri Freedman
  • Publisher : The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc
  • Release : 2009-01-15
  • ISBN : 143585666X
  • Pages : 67 pages

Download or read book Steroids written by Jeri Freedman and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts everywhere are arguing over the effects of steroid use on individuals, sports, and society. Anabolic steroids build up muscle tissue. Most steroids used for medical purposes are synthesized in labs. These are used by doctors to treat a wide variety of diseases, such as muscle wasting, growth deficiency, asthma, skin conditions, and others. Two groups of people commonly abuse steroids: athletes who believe that building up more muscle will give them a competitive edge, and people who are concerned about their personal attractiveness, who wish to enhance their physique. Buying and using steroids without a prescription is illegal--and dangerous. Steroids have many serious effects on the body and mind. Too much of them can cause harm and permanent damage.

Book Paediatric Forensic Medicine and Pathology Second Edition

Download or read book Paediatric Forensic Medicine and Pathology Second Edition written by Anthony Busuttil and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-11-28 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child abuse and suspicious child deaths are very complicated matters for clinicians, pathologists, law enforcement officials and legal professionals to investigate. Meanwhile, the evidence base for forensic pathology, especially in paediatrics, is steadily growing. In Paediatric Forensic Medicine and Pathology, two internationally acclaimed editors have brought together a first class author team who provide an up-to-date, comprehensive, and thorough review of the contemporary problems encountered in practice today. Individual chapters explore the emerging role of imaging in the diagnosis of non-accidental injury and compare recent evidence contrasting sudden infant death and SIDS; the head and neck injury chapter carefully explores the 'shaken baby syndrome' and similar patterns of injury that have recently gained widespread media attention. Special emphasis is given to interview and assessment procedures, and useful clinical forms are included throughout the book. Whether in a clinical, laboratory, or legal setting, readers dealing with forensic inquiries or who are in preparation for court will find the comprehensive background and evidence base necessary to support their investigations. Paediatric Forensic Medicine and Pathology is an invaluable resource for forensic pathologists, paediatric pathologists, and paediatricians, as well as all practitioners in the judicial and legal, criminal investigation and social services systems that have to deal with such cases.
