Book excerpt: When Allison Jensen was six, she and her best friend were playing in the woods near home. One moment her friend was beside her; then she was gone. When no leads emerged, she was given up for dead. Now, years later, trying to fill in the gaps of a patchwork memory, to make sense of the senseless, Allison still can get no answers from the Mormon community in which she lives. Why is she being fed half-truths? Why is her father able to tyrannize and torment as the self-appointed messenger of God? When a brutal attack on her as a young adult makes her desperate to escape Mormon bonds, Allison finds herself on a collision course with community leaders as they cover up the steps of a sexual predator. She must stop them before they find her and keep her from piecing together the tragic past that has haunted her life.

At age twelve Ted, a tried and true backwoods native, was moved into town and over the next few years he became accustomed to living among the civilized people. After slowly but surely accepting his conversion he graduated from high and left home to go on a construction job with his dad, not knowing that it was forever. Of course he had dated a few girls, and away from home he began spreading his wings until he finally got married. But a Dear John letter while he was overseas in the army ended that. Divorced and discharged he left the army determined to see the world and he met her on a Gray-hound bus half way across Arizona, and after their brief affair he could not forget her. After a gun battle in Alabama, life on the board the GOLDEN GOOSE and number of boat wrecks, a close call in Cuban waters, fighting rebels in Nicaragua, a storm in the Caribbean, and attacked by pirates before finally reaching the Panama Canal. Finally utopia, legally opening the manganese mine. Illegally, running the black-market as agreed to with the Panamanian officials. Download or read book Abraham Lincoln American Prince written by Wayne Soini and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between Abraham Lincoln and his two most influential ancestors--his mother and "the Virginia planter," a slaveholder, a shadowy grandfather he likely never met--is rarely mentioned in Lincoln biographies or in history texts. However, Lincoln, forever linked to the cause of freedom and equality in America, spoke candidly of the planter to his law partner, Billy Herndon, who recalled his words, "My mother inherited his qualities and I hers. All that I am or ever hope to be I get from my mother--God bless her." This vital two-generation relationship was nonetheless problematic. In Lincoln's boyhood the planter was a figure he ridiculed while in his young manhood the planter evolved into a role model whom Lincoln revered and associated with Jefferson's overdue ideal that "all men are created equal." Thus galvanized "by blood" to educate himself, to stand for election and to oppose slavery, Lincoln quit farming at age 22. This book explains how he thus followed an inherited family dream.

Book excerpt: 2013 Speaker’s Book Award — Shortlisted Laura Secord is now famous for her singular feat of bravery during the War of 1812, but did she warn the British and help defeat the American invaders as her legend says? After dragging her injured husband off the battlefield during the War of 1812, Laura Secord (1775-1868) was forced to house American soldiers for financial support while she nursed him back to health. It was during this time that she overheard the American plan to ambush British troops at Beaver Dams. Through an outstanding act of perseverance and courage in 1813, Laura walked an astonishing 30 kilometers from her home to a British outpost to warn Lieutenant James FitzGibbon. Despite facing rough terrain, the ever-present danger of being caught by American troops, and rather delicate encounters with Native forces, Laura reached FitzGibbon just in time for the British to prepare and execute an ambush on American military nearby, forcing the U.S. general to surrender. Laura lived a very long time, dying at the age of 93. In her lifetime the government never formally recognized her singular feat of bravery, and much controversy still envelopes her legacy.

Book excerpt: Holly Marie was forty-two years old the day she found out she was missing. At ten months old, Holly Marie was brought to the door of a church by three barefoot women in white robes and head coverings. Adopted by the pastor and raised in a loving Christian home, Holly nevertheless struggled with the ache of not knowing what had happened to her biological parents. She still felt their absence even as she married and started a family of her own. When two detectives showed up at the restaurant where she worked and informed her that she had a large family in Florida who had been searching for her for over 40 years, Holly’s past became the reality of her present, and she began the sometimes painful journey of discovering the truth about her origins: Her parents had been brutally murdered, their case still unsolved. With the help of law enforcement across four states, forensic genealogists, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and her newly discovered family members, the missing pieces began to come together. Except these—why had her parents been murdered? And who had murdered them? She soon found out that the truth leads not always to answers but sometimes to more questions, that it also brings healing and restoration, and that we must surrender our unknowns to God until, in His perfect timing, all truths are revealed. Finding Baby Holly is the true, inspiring story of a wife and mother who was “missing” for over forty years after her parents’ murders, the persistent detectives who never stopped investigating, and the birth family who never lost hope in finding her.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Early November on the Eastern Shore of Maryland is a fine time of year. The breezes off the Chesapeake Bay are sufficiently cool to turn the leaves vibrant but still mild enough to give hope for an Indian summer. In the 18th century fishermen could catch blue crab for a few more weeks; enslaved people, indentured servants, and farmers sowed the winter wheat; and women poured candles to see them through the impending winter. Although planters had long grown tobacco here, by 1732, the year John Dickinson was born, grains were more profitable as tobacco prices stagnated. Public tobacco houses still dotted the landscape, and the acrid smell of the drying weed seeped from black barns and mingled with the pungent scent of the Bay"--

Download or read book In the Light of Day written by Michael G. Abresch and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it in our lives that have us caught in the web of confusion? The articles in this book come from the many different areas concerning life and the battles within. They cover everyday life with differing views and can bring to the front the source of our perceptions concerning God, and the troubling issues of our lives. While a few of the articles in this book speak to some argumentative issues, the content of them, as well as all of the other articles in this book, comes through the inspiration that God has given me for all of my writings. I'm not asking for everyone to agree with these articles, but I am asking that you give their content some consideration. God will adjust our hearts and align the boundaries of our convictions with His own, if we will allow Him. There is none of us that have everything right, but we all have something to offer. The life of a Christian can be complex when trying to measure up to standards that are unattainable. That's why it's important for us to understand our position in the order of God and His kingdom. Michael G. Abresch (Abe)
