Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steps in the Development of American Democracy George Slocum Bennett, a graduate of Wesleyan University in the class of 1864, showed his lifelong interest in the training of youth for the privileges and duties of citizenship by long periods of service as a member of the board of education of his home city, and as member of the boards of trustees of Wyoming Seminary and Wesleyan University. It was fitting, therefore, that, when the gifts made by himself and family to Wesleyan University were combined to form a fund whose income should be used "in defraying the expenses of providing for visiting lecturers, preachers, and other speakers supplemental to the college faculty," it should have been decided that the primary purpose should be to provide each year a course of lectures, by a distinguished speaker, "for the promotion of a better understanding of national problems and of a more perfect realization of the responsibilities of citizenship," and to provide for the publication of such lectures so that they might reach a larger public than the audience to which they should, in the first instance, be addressed. Download or read book Three Centuries of American Democracy Classic Reprint written by William Macdonald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Centuries of American Democracy I have had particularly in mind, in writing this book, the very large number of persons who want to know the main facts and the formative influences in the growth of the United States as a democratic nation, but who nevertheless have no time to read elaborate narratives or to study a series of books on special periods or topics. I hope, however, that the book may also prove useful to students and teachers as a summary narrative around which the details of lectures or comprehensive reading can be grouped. The references to authorities are intended, like the text, primarily for the general reader who may wish to pursue the subject further in books that are most worth while. So many elaborate bibliographies of American history are now available that anyone who desires to follow any particular topic to its limits can easily find guidance, while the systematic student will naturally enlarge his bibliography according to his needs or the library resources at his command. Book Democracy in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Democracy in America Classic Reprint written by Alexis de Tocqueville and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy in America: Volume One is probably the most well known work of Alexis De Tocqueville, a French author and philosopher. It is the author's examination of the social and political systems of the United States. Tocqueville's book was a major success upon its release and immediately became popular in both Europe and the United States. It is still considered one of the greatest pieces of political science literature ever written about the United States, and is a foundational text for the further study of the subject matter. It is a well written and highly readable book. The author had visited America on assignment to investigate the penal system, and while conducting his assigned research Tocqueville took a great interest in the larger political system of America. The book is divided into chapters which each focus on a different aspect of the American political and social system. The author approaches his subject matter thematically, highlighting major themes including the distinct spheres of American life, the influence of the country's Puritan foundation, and the importance of the Federal Constitution on daily life. Tocqueville is largely complementary of the American system, and frequently draws on his knowledge of the French system for comparisons. Democracy in America: Volume One remains an important piece of writing nearly two hundred years after its initial publication. Students of political science, particular in the United States, owe it to themselves to become familiar with Tocqueville's work. Anybody interested in the social and political history of the United States is encouraged to add this work to their library.
