Book Stepping Out Of The Ordinary

Download or read book Stepping Out Of The Ordinary written by Mike Hope and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-03-03 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something gnawing away inside his body was suggesting it should be taken out of its comfort zone. At 30 years old, Mike discovered rock and winter climbing perhaps a little later in life, it just meant he had to train harder and catch up on the others rather quickly, pretty soon progression into the world of mountaineering, alpinism and interesting adventures were to follow. In writing from his personal accounts from Alaska to the southern tip of Patagonia or from Baffin Island to Norway’s Lofoten Isles, he endeavours to transport the reader to those remarkable worlds to become intimate with them and their extremes of remoteness, wanting to share the rawness and intimacy of nature which is truly inspirational. Conventional family holidays were a thing of the past as Lynne, his wife, joined in on some of the adventures. All of these were achieved while both held down full-time employment, Mike as a production manager and Lynne as a dental receptionist. Their offspring, Gary and Nicky, were not short of a few adventures of their own too. Unfortunately, in the places visited, the evidence became abundantly clear of our rapidly changing world and of the tragic impact the human race is having upon it.

Book excerpt: Stepping Out of Line shares in great detail my personal account of what it is like to be in a predominantly African-American sorority and what it is like to denounce from one. Many who are not in a sorority or fraternity do not see what goes on behind closed doors. There is more to it than fame and brotherhood. It is a spiritual battle. Stepping Out of Line provides a Christian perspective and brings light to the areas of darkness in sororities and fraternities. If you are thinking about joining a sorority, this book is for you. If you are thinking about denouncing or validating your reason to stay in a sorority or fraternity, this book is also for you. Stepping Out of Line provides a needed outlook on sororities and fraternities. It encourages you to think about what God says about this topic and whether or not being a part of a Greek lettered organization is pleasing in His sight.

Book excerpt: The instrument in my hand is a pen of freedom. The pen is mighty for it can declare things that are true. The mighty pen has the power to influence for good or incite evil. It creates in the mind of a reader intent and purpose.Ideas will flow from the heart and mind. Down the arm and through the wiggling hand to the end of the pen and onto the paper, where the journey begins. Not all pens are alike. But they are all at the disposal of the hand that picks them up. As long as there is ink in the pen work can be done. A working pen means ideas can be shared, feelings conveyed, and notes written. People can feel chastised, praised, bored or entertained with a few swipes of a pen. Notes can be verbose or they can be terse. Pen, paper, words and intent combine to change the world or just a perception of it. History was made and continues to change with just the swipe of a pen.

Book Sport Play and Ethical Reflection

Download or read book Sport Play and Ethical Reflection written by Randolph Feezell and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In paperback for the first time, Randolph Feezell’s Sport, Play, and Ethical Reflection immediately tackles two big questions about sport: “What is it?” and “Why does it attract so many people?” Feezell argues that sports participation is best described as a form of human play, and the attraction for participants and viewers alike derives from both its aesthetic richness and narrative structure. He then claims that the way in which sports encourage serious competition in trivial pursuits is fundamentally absurd, and therefore participation requires a state of irony in the participants, where seriousness and playfulness are combined. Feezell builds on these conclusions, addressing important ethical issues, arguing that sportsmanship should be seen as a kind of Aristotelian mean between the extremes of over- and under-investment in sport. Chapters on cheating, running up the score, and character building stress sport as a rule-governed, tradition-bound practice with standards of excellence and goods internal to the practice. With clear writing and numerous illuminating examples, Feezell demonstrates deep insight into both of his subjects.

  • Author : Jennifer Anna Gosetti-Ferencei

Download or read book The Ecstatic Quotidian written by Jennifer Anna Gosetti-Ferencei and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascination with quotidian experience in modern art, literature, and philosophy promotes ecstatic forms of reflection on the very structure of the everyday world. Gosetti-Ferencei examines the ways in which modern art and literature enable a study of how we experience quotidian life. She shows that modernism, while exhibiting many strands of development, can be understood by investigating how its attentions to perception and expectation, to the common quality of things, or to childhood play gives way to experiences of ecstasis&—the stepping outside of the ordinary familiarity of the world. While phenomenology grounds this study (through Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Bachelard), what makes this book more than a treatise on phenomenological aesthetics is the way in which modernity itself is examined in its relation to the quotidian. Through the works of artists and writers such as Benjamin, C&ézanne, Frost, Klee, Newman, Pollock, Ponge, Proust, Rilke, Robbe-Grillet, Rothko, Sartre, and Twombly, the world of quotidian life can be seen to harbor a latent ecstasis. The breakdown of the quotidian through and after modernism then becomes an urgent question for understanding art and literature in its capacity to further human experience, and it points to the limits of phenomenological explications of the everyday.
