Download or read book Stendhal written by Michel Crouzet and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Best known for the novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839), he is highly regarded for the acute analysis of his characters' psychology and considered one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism.

Book excerpt: "In 1801, Henri Beyle, a young officer of Napoleon's armies in Italy, bought a notebook and wrote, "I am undertaking to write the history of my life day by day ... making it a rule not to stand on ceremony and never to erase." Through the next fourteen years he abided by this rule, recording the fresh and spontaneous reactions to the events around him of that developing genius which was later to be known to the world by the name of Stendhal. This is a document unique in literary history, important not only as a fascinating contemporary record of the Napoleonic era, but as a major work of Stendhal, never before published in English." -- dust jacket.

Book excerpt: The articles which Stendhal contributed as French correspondent for the 'London Magazine', 'New Monthly Magazine' and other English Marketing Reviews of the 1820s are here brought together in a single volume, the only edition available in English. In them Stendhal – defying fashion and giving proof of the bold originality of his creative writing – provides an illuminating and often entertaining commentary on the politics and mores of post-Napoleonic France and Italy, and reveals his outstanding and all too rarely acknowledged gifts as a reviewer and literary critic. Together with the articles from the English Marketing Reviews, this edition includes translations of articles, essays and notes on Cornielle, Scott and Lord Byron, who was on terms of close acquaintance with Stendhal during his stay in Milan in 1816.
