This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stein and the Era of Reform in Prussia, 1807-1815 The literature of prussian-german history in Eng lish is very scanty and most of it relates to the last seventy-five years. The period covered by this brief biography has been treated by Seeley in his Life and Times of Stein. That diffuse work is nevertheless a very substantial composite of the German historical work available forty years ago. It does a little more for Stein biographically than can be found in Pertz's undigested collection of documents. The appearance of Lehmann's great biography and the controversial literature it aroused and of many special studies and new interpretations of men and of phases of the his tory of the years after Frederick the Great have made both Pertz and Seeley unsatisfactory. With this new material at hand it was clearly worth while to study anew the work of Stein. In doing this I have especially sought to give even in this brief compass a more ade quate account than has hitherto been available in Eng lish of the economic conditions preceding the edict of 1807 and to point out that its importance is as a pro gram rather than as a reorganization of the Prussia of that day. Book Encyclopedia of the Age of Political Revolutions and New Ideologies 1760 1815 2 volumes

Download or read book Encyclopedia of the Age of Political Revolutions and New Ideologies 1760 1815 2 volumes written by Gregory Fremont-Barnes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By giving rise to new ideologies that in time transformed the political structure of much of the world, the American and French Revolutions stand as two of the most important political events in global history. The American establishment of a Republican government, and the gradual expansion of democracy that ensued, altered traditional political and social thought, thus shaping the later French Revolution and creating the core ethic of later American political values. The Enlightenment ideals of the French Revolution, as later spread by the armies of Napoleon, dissolved most traditional European notions of political authority. This encyclopedia offers current, detailed information on the people, events, movements, and ideas that defined the revolutions in France and America, as well as in other parts of the world during the late eighteenth-century Age of Revolutions. Besides numerous entries on various countries of Europe whose histories were affected by the French Revolution, such as Austria, Belgium, Germany, Poland, and Russia, the many entries covering the people, events, groups, and ideologies of Revolutionary and Napoleonic France include the following: Civil Constitution of the Clergy, Georges Jacques Danton, The Directory, Guillotine, Josephine, Empress of France, Law of Suspects, The Mountain, Prairial Insurrection, Tennis Court Oath, White Terror. Besides various entries covering American colonies/states, such as Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Virginia, the numerous entries covering the figures, events, and ideologies of the American Revolution and Early Federal Period of the United States include the following: Abigail Adams, Boston Massacre, Constitutional Convention, William Franklin, Lexington and Concord, Actions at Loyalists, Massachusetts Government Act, Edmund Randolph, Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Finally, the encyclopedia offers various entries covering important revolutionary figures and movements that were active in other parts of the world during the period 1760-1815, including the following: Simon Bolivar, Dutch Revolutions, Haitian Revolution, Hispaniola, Latin American Revolutions, Mexican Revolution, Pugachev Rebellion, Toussaint l'Ouverture. Besides over 450 clearly written and highly informative entries, the encyclopedia also includes primary documents, a chronology, an extensive introductory essay, a bibliography, a guide to related topics, and a series of useful maps.

Book Friedrich Schleiermacher Between Enlightenment and Romanticism

Download or read book Friedrich Schleiermacher Between Enlightenment and Romanticism written by Richard Crouter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-22 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Schleiermacher's groundbreaking work in theology and philosophy was forged in the cultural ferment of Berlin at the convergence of the Enlightenment and Romanticism. The three sections of this book include illuminating sketches of Schleiermacher's relationship to contemporaries (Mendelssohn, Hegel and Kierkegaard), his work as public theologian (dialogue on Jewish emancipation, founding the University of Berlin) as well as the formation and impact of his two most famous books, On Religion: Speeches to its Cultured Despisers and The Christian Faith. Richard Crouter examines Schleiermacher's stance regarding the status of doctrine, Church and political authority, and the place of theology among the academic disciplines. Dedicated to the Protestant Church in the line of Calvin, Schleiermacher was equally a man of the university who brought the highest standards of rationality, linguistic sensitivity and a sense of history to bear upon religion.

Book A Most Dangerous Book Tacitus s Germania from the Roman Empire to the Third Reich

Download or read book A Most Dangerous Book Tacitus s Germania from the Roman Empire to the Third Reich written by Christopher B. Krebs and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In every way, A Most Dangerous Book is a most brilliant achievement." —Michael Dirda, Washington Post When the Roman historian Tacitus wrote the Germania, a none-too-flattering little book about the ancient Germans, he could not have foreseen that centuries later the Nazis would extol it as “a bible” and vow to resurrect Germany on its grounds. But the Germania inspired—and polarized—readers long before the rise of the Third Reich. In this captivating history, Christopher B. Krebs, a professor of classics at Stanford University, traces the wide-ranging influence of the Germania, revealing how an ancient text rose to take its place among the most dangerous books in the world.
