Book Renewing Design with Communities

Download or read book Renewing Design with Communities written by Anisha Shekhar Mukherji and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at alternative ways of analyzing traditional and contemporary architectural design and building practices in South Asia with a special focus on India. It showcases how collaborative projects between architects and local communities and drawing from local building traditions can lead to sustainable and equitable practices in architecture. The volume includes an analysis of projects in rural, tribal, and urban areas of India and Nepal and first-hand accounts of architects, teachers, and professionals engaged in the theory and practice of design and architecture. It examines the differences between the individualistic and the collective approach and explores the meaning of architecture as a process and as a product and as a decentralized, ecologically, and locally sensitive way of designing. While comparing traditional and modern methods of building, it also examines the impact of each method on the community, the economy and the surrounding environment. This book will be of interest to researchers and students of architecture, urban studies, urban planning, urban ecology, urban geography, and sustainable development. It will also be useful for architects, planners, urban designers, and professionals associated with these disciplines.

The Empire of Man has fallen and a new Dark Age is upon the stars. With planets cut off and reduced to subsistence and ignorance, humanity has nearly forgotten its past greatness. But one battle computer has survived the Collapse. He is Center. And Center is determined to find and aid leaders who can return a star-faring republic to the galaxy. The first of these leaders is Raj Whitehall, a man born to be a general, and molded to retake civilization itself from the jaws of barbarism. The Sword For five years Raj Whitehall has led his men across the face of the planet Bellevue. With saber and bayonet he has conquered one barbarian nation after another. Now his greatest enemy is his own overlord, Barholm Clerett, who's so paranoid of Raj's victories that he is reduced to only one thought: Raj Whitehall must die. The Chosen Planted by interstellar probes on hundreds of human-occupied worlds, the downloaded personalities of Raj Whitehall and the ancient battle computer known as Center work together for planetary unity. On Visager, a nation-state of vicious militarists is about to start the final war that will bring their fatal racist infection to the stars. Now two young men once at odds in war must unite and, with the aid of the disembodied voices of their mentors from the stars, stand against exporting eternal tyranny to the galaxy itself. Book Renewing the Maya World

Download or read book Renewing the Maya World written by Garrett W. Cook and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year in the Highland Guatemala town of Santiago Momostenango, Maya religious societies, dance teams, and cofradías perform the annual cycle of rituals and festivals prescribed by Costumbre (syncretized Maya Christian religion), which serves to renew the cosmic order. In this richly detailed ethnography, Garrett Cook explores how these festivals of Jesucristo and the saints derive from and reenact three major ancient Maya creation myths, thus revealing patterns of continuity between contemporary expressive culture and the myths, rituals, and iconography of the Classic and Postclassic Maya. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in the 1970s and renewed in the 1990s, Cook describes the expressive culture tradition performed in and by the cofradías and their dance teams. He listens as dancers and cofrades explain the meaning of service and of the major ritual symbols in the cults of the saints and Jesucristo. Comparing these symbols to iconographic evidence from Palenque and myths from the Popol Vuh, Cook persuasively argues that the expressive culture of Momostenango enacts major Maya creation myths—the transformative sunrise, the representation of the year as the life cycle of anthropomorphized nature, and the erection of an axis mundi. This research documents specific patterns of continuity and discontinuity in the communal expression of Maya religious and cosmogonic themes. Along with other recent research, it demonstrates the survival of a basic Maya pattern—the world-creating vegetative renewal cycle—in the highland Maya cults of the saints and Jesucristo.

Book excerpt: God brings new life in unexpected ways and in the most unlikely situations. This devotional reflects on how God does this in the creation of all things, the Israelites’ rescue from slavery in Egypt, the dry bones and Ezekiel, the fiery furnace, the big fish and Jonah, and more. Life Renewed provides devotions for each day from Ash Wednesday to the Resurrection of Our Lord/Vigil of Easter (March 5 to April 19, 2025). The devotions begin with evocative images and brief scripture readings drawn from traditional Easter Vigil texts. The writers then bring their diverse voices and pastoral wisdom to the texts with quotations to ponder, reflections, and prayers.

Book Rock Mechanics and Engineering

Download or read book Rock Mechanics and Engineering written by Helin Fu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock Mechanics and Engineering: Prediction and Control of Landslides and Geological Disasters presents the state-of-the-art in monitoring and forecasting geotechnical hazards during the survey and design, construction, and operation of a railway. This volume offers the latest research and practical knowledge on the regularity of disaster-causing activities, and the monitoring and forecasting of rockfalls, landslides, and debris flow induced by rainfall and human activity. The book gives guidance on how to optimize railway design, prevent and control measures during construction, and geological hazard remediation. The book also advises engineers on how to achieve traffic safety on high-speed railways. Eleven chapters present best practices in the prediction and control of landslides and rockfalls in geological disasters, derived from years of geotechnical engineering research and practice on high-speed railways in China. High-speed railways bring characteristic geotechnical challenges including a complete maintenance system, a long railway line, and the subjection of the geological body to cyclic loads. Since the damage to the geological body is influenced by fatigue as well as rock and soil strength and hydrology, the study of geotechnical hazards to high-speed rail is very complex. Monitoring and predicting such hazards on high-speed railways is a significant challenge to their safe construction and operation. - Presents the latest technical achievement and development trends in landslide and rockfall forecasting - Considers the challenges of high-speed railways to the prediction and control of geotechnical hazards - Gives both in-situ and laboratory tests for rockfalls, and considers the collapse process of rock slopes - Describes the principles of slope monitoring with specific reference to high-speed rail - Details an automatic monitoring system for geotechnical hazards to high-speed rail
