Download or read book Steel Highway Bridges With Reinforced Concrete Floors Classic Reprint written by Earl Zink Cornwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steel Highway Bridges With Reinforced Concrete Floors The dead load to be assumed for designing a bridge with wood floors is known very accurately; but it is not known for bridges with concrete floors, and consequently, the dead load assumed is frequently very much in error, often making a complete redesign of the bridge necessary. Book Types of Modern Highway Bridges

Download or read book Types of Modern Highway Bridges written by Barber and Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types of Modern Highway Bridges: Barber and Young Bridge and Structural Engineers, Toronto The uniform excellence of structural steel with the increasing price and poor quality of timber has resulted in the practical abandonment of the latter as a material for bridge construction except in parts of the country where timber is cheap and plentiful. In the more populous districts it is now no longer used for floors, steel stringers and reinforced concrete floor slabs having been found much more economical in the end on account of the frequent renewals necessitated by rapid wear and decay. Even in the sparsely settled regions of New Ontario, the use of timber floors in bridges built by the Provincial Government is regarded as a temporary expedient, provision being made in designing for the substitution of concrete floors when the trailic becomes heavy and timber becomes scarce and poor. Book Concrete Bridges and Culverts for Both Railroads and Highways Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concrete Bridges and Culverts for Both Railroads and Highways Classic Reprint written by H. Grattan Tyrrell and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Bridges and Culverts, for Both Railroads and Highways Bridges of solid concrete are superior to those of any other material. They are as permanent as stone, and have a less cost. Masonry bridges and aqneducts built by the Romans are still standing, and some of them in use. A few old cast iron bridges remain, dating back a century or more, but a majority of the modern ones built of wrought iron and steel have a very limited existence. Forty years ago, steel bridges were believed to be permanent structures, but it is now well known that they do not generally last longer than from twenty to thirty years. Solid concrete bridges are superior to those in which reinforcing metal is required for resisting tensile stresses in the arch ring. Continuous water-soaking reduces the adhesion of concrete to steel by about 100 percent, and the effect of shocks and vibrations also tends to destroy the bond. It frequently occurs that cracks develop, sufficiently large to admit water, and when water and moisture reach the reinforcing metal, it is then only a few years before the metal is destroyed by rust. An old wire suspension bridge that recently failed, was examined and reported on by the writer, and it was found that failure occurred because of the rusting and breaking of the wire cables embedded in the anchorage. Book The Designing of Ordinary Iron Highway Bridges Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Designing of Ordinary Iron Highway Bridges Tms work is principally a compilation of the results of investigations made by the author during the last three years, and presented in a number of papers to the various American engineering societies. Sev eral portions of the book. Including many of the tables, are new, as this is the first systematic treatment, by the author, of bridges for cities and manufacturing districts; the previous papers having dealt especially with those for country roads. In making this compilation, the author has been governed by no blind adherence to what he has already writ ten, but has made changes wherever they have appeared to be advisable. One of the chief objects of this work is to reduce the labor of iron highway-bridge designing to a minimum, for which purpose every thing that could be so arranged has been tabulated. Not only are the exact sizes of hip verticals, joists, floor beams, beam hangers, lateral rods and struts, portal rods and struts, vibration rods, intermediate struts, lattice bars, stay plates, etc., given for all practical cases, but also the most economic dimensions of panels and trusses, and dead loads, so exact that by their use all necessity for a second trial is avoided. These tables, it is hoped, will prove useful to those in the actual practice of bridge designing, enabling them to greatly reduce the time required to make diagrams of stresses and sections and estimates of cost. The other tables, although they do not give final results, should also be of service. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
