Book excerpt: Arctic Alaska and Siberia, or, Eight Months with the Arctic Whalemen is an account of the 1887 Arctic whaling season by journalist Herbert L. Aldrich (1860-1948). Between March and October of 1887, Aldrich spent time on eight New Bedford whaling vessels, documenting the whaling industry and the native peoples of Arctic Alaska. Aldrich was a young reporter for the New Bedford Evening Standard who resolved to accompany the Arctic whaling fleet after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and told he had less than a year to live. He received the support of the leaders of New Bedford's whaling industry, who wanted him to document what they knew to be a dying industry. During his time in the Arctic, Aldrich took more than 700 photographs documenting all aspects of the whale hunt. Many of his photographs are now preserved in New Bedford Whaling Museum in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Upon his return to New Bedford, Aldrich lectured extensively on his experiences and published this book in 1889. The book includes illustrations and a map of the Arctic whaling grounds north of Alaska. Defying predictions of an early death, Aldrich lived into his late eighties. He went on to become managing editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Jacksonville Florida Citizen and in 1897 founded the Aldrich Publishing Company of New York.

To present-day urban dwellers, such association between people, animals, and the environment may seem exotic. But for the Iñupiat and Yupik peoples these relationships are important, vital pursuits. A co-publication project with the Canadian Circumpolar Institute Press of the University of Alberta, this volume traces regional native whaling practices for the past 2,000 years. Contributions center on three themes: variation in whaling practices, Yupik and Iñupiat whaling traditions over time, and interactions with changing environmental conditions that include major climatic episodes as well as shorter perturbations. Emphasis is placed on the diversity of approaches to subsistence whaling. While the majority of contributions result from NSF-funded research, several other contributors are ethnographers and archaeologists who have carried out whale research in Alaska for many years. Also included are essays presenting Russian research along the western margin of the Bering Strait and the Bering and Chukchi seas.

Aquaforte was the only entirely Norwegian-owned factory in Newfoundland at the turn of the century, and one of the only whaling companies to retain all company records, making it an invaluable resource for maritime historians. The archive consists of business transactions, operations details, personal letters, photographs, wage accounts, equipment lists, and product information. The journal introduces the Aquaforte station in the context of global whaling, then traces the business history of the Ellefsen family, and then covers in detail the short history of Aquaforte, from its inception in 1898 to its collapse in 1908 due to stock exploitation. A postscript details both the family’s return to Norway and the whaling cycles in Newfoundland and Labrador post-Aquaforte, between 1908 and 1972, when the Canadian government placed a moratorium on whaling. The book reproduces numerous maps, photographs, lists, and tables. It concludes with a bibliography and six appendices providing relevant whaling industry statistics.
