Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Power Plant Auxiliaries and Accessories Most of the preventable losses in the engine rooms of steam power plants occur in connection with the auxiliary equipment. Generally speaking, there is not a great deal that the operating engineer can do to increase the efficiencies of the prime movers -the turbines or engines. It is also a fact - that, as a rule, the prime movers in a plant give relatively little trouble and involve relatively little maintenance expense. Most of the trouble and maintenance expense is due to the auxiliaries. Thus, it. follows that, in a sense, the auxiliary equipment comprises the most important part of that portion of the power-plant equipment which transforms the heat in the steam into power. Hence, in this book, it has been the endeavor to give such data as will enable the operator to select, and properly install, auxiliary equipment which will insure the generation of power at the least cost. Furthermore - and quite as important. - it has been the aim to provide the information whereby this auxiliary equipment can be so operated and maintained that its preventable losses will be a minimum and that its up-keep expense will be as small as is feasible. Drawings for all of the 411 illustrations were made especially for this work. It has been the endeavor so to design and render these pictures that they will convoy the desired information with a minimum of supplementary discussion. Throughout the text, principles which are presented are explained with descriptive expositions or with worked-out arithmetical examples. At the end of each of the 13 divisions there are questions to be answered and, where justified, problems to be solved by the reader. These questions and problems arc based on the text matter in the division just preceding. If the reader can answer the questions and solve the problems, he then must be conversant with the subject matter of the division. Detail solutions to all of the problems are printed in the appendix in the back of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-10-08 with total page 938 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Power Plant Engineering The field embraced by the title is a large one and it has been necessary to limit the treatment to essential elements. Much of the matter contained in the author's original notes, including that relat ing to, steam engine design, valve gears, steam boiler design, and the like, has therefore been omitted. The numerous references appear ing throughout the text and the appended bibliographies, which have been carefully compiled, are depended upon to extend the scope of the work. The standard codes of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for conducting engine and boiler trials are in frequent demand by engineers and have therefore been included as an appendix. Authorities have been freely consulted and extensive use made of current engineering literature, due acknowledgment being made by footnote or reference whenever possible. The matter included is representative of American practice and no effort has been made to include any other except in a few special cases. The author wishes to express his obligations to Prof. Raymond Burnham for many valuable suggestions and corrections, and to Mrs. Julia Beveridge, librarian at Armour Institute, for assistance in compiling references. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam Engineer's Handbook: A Convenient Reference Book, for All Persons Interested in Steam Boilers, Steam Engines, Steam Turbines, and the Auxiliary Appliances and Machinery of Power Plants This handbook is intended as a reference volume for persons engaged in the actual management and care of steam engines, steam boilers, and the auxiliary appliances to be found in the average steampower plant. The aim of the publishers has been to select data of general interest from the vast store of available material, and to combine therewith information relating to the problems and difficulties likely to be encountered in the daily work of the engineer and the fireman. In order to keep the book of such size as to be carried conveniently in the pocket, the treatment of many of the subjects has necessarily been brief; but subjects of greater importance, as, for example, the care and operation of boilers and engines, have been dealt with more fully. The various tables have been selected with great care, and only those have been included which are likely to be consulted most frequently. The numerous rules and formulas are stated as simply and concisely as possible, and their applications are clearly illustrated by the full solution of many examples. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design of an Auxiliary Gas Producer Power Plant for the University of Illinois: Thesis for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering of the University of Illinois, Presented June 1905 As the title states, the object of this work is the Design of an Auxiliary Gas Producer Power Plant for the University of Illinois. This plant is to Operate as an auxiliary to the steam power plant and is designed to furnish power during the summer or at any other time that the regular plant is shut down, or when more power is needed than can be furnished by the regular plant. Since the plant depends entirely upon producer gas for it power, it is thought wise to give such explanations as will make clear the theory of producer gas and the mechanical construction of the producer apparatus and its Operation. Desirable sites for the plant were carefully looked over and their advantages and dis-advantages discussed. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Engineering and Economic Consideration of a Low Pressure Steam Turbine Installation Only as to the prime movers alone, but as effecting the auxiliary equipment as well. These changes have all tended toward the reduction in the size of power houses for equal capacity. Now comes the low pressure turbine and no such radical changes are necessary in order to Obtain improved results. It is not necessary to discard old apparatus or to make any great changes in the Operating conditions to take advantage of the saving Offered by the use of a low pressure turbine. The low pressure turbine does require, however, that additional Space be provided. The low pressure turbine can be used in connection with the most antiquated steam engine installation and greatly improve the economy Of the station. The low pressure turbine is therefore very attractive to central station owners as it increases the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
