Book The Steam Rail Motors of the Great Western Railway

Download or read book The Steam Rail Motors of the Great Western Railway written by Ken Gibbs and published by History Press. This book was released on 2015-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-propelled carriages were a big innovation at the beginning of the 20th century, and the GWR was quick to develop a large number of steam motor cars to link farms and scattered villages to the new branch lines. Their steam motor cars ran from 1903-1935, stopping during the war, and were so effective at making rural areas accessible they became victims of their own success. Wagons brought in to meet the demand proved too heavy for the carriages and they struggled on hills, and after they stopped service all 99 steam carriages were eventually scrapped. Engineer Ken Gibbs reveals the unique GWR carriages, a window into early 20th century transport, and the modern-replica he helped build, now the only way of viewing these charming cars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late Victorian/early Edwardian period, the development of the motor car represented the peak of technological experimentation. Termed 'horseless carriages', these cars were mainly constructed by inventive engineers in back-street workshops, and most simply comprised the frame and bodywork of a horse-drawn carriage fitted with a petrol engine. However, experimentation was rife – there was much debate as to the most appropriate form of motive power, be it petrol, steam or electric. As this small-scale experimentation developed into a burgeoning industry, manufacturers such as Vauxhall, Wolseley and Humber looked to the proving grounds of endurance runs, hill climbs and organized races to increase sales potential, popularity, and, most importantly, reputation. These early days of motoring were beset with reliability issues as roads were often rutted, dusty, flooded and rarely properly maintained, but comfort and efficiency improved with demand. This fascinating title covers the history of veteran motor cars from their earliest iterations until 1905, and is packed with fascinating facts about the experimental origins of the motoring industry.

Excerpt: A steam car is a light car (automobile) powered by a steam engine. Steam locomotives, steam engines capable of propelling themselves along either road or rails, developed around one hundred years earlier than internal combustion engine cars although their weight restricted them to agricultural and heavy haulage work on roads. The light car developed contemporaneously with both steam and internal combustion engines, as both engineering and road building matured. As the steam car could use the vast experience of steam engines already developed with the steam railway locomotive, it initially had the advantage. In 1900 the steam car was broadly superior and even managed to hold absolute land speed records. By 1920 the internal combustion engine had progressed to such a point that the steam car was an anachronism. Few steam cars have been built since the 1920s, although the technology is not implausible and projects intermittently occur to recreate a "modern" steam car with modern levels of convenience, performance and efficiency. The greatest technical challenges to the steam car have focused...
