Book The Last Days of Steam in Bristol and Somerset

Download or read book The Last Days of Steam in Bristol and Somerset written by Colin G. Maggs and published by . This book was released on 2009-11-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of a classic text. Although diesel traction had been introduced to the county of Somerset as early as 1958 it was not until 1966, and the closure of the Somerset and Dorset Railway, that steam finally disappeared from the county. Here Colin Maggs has brought together a superb collection of photographs which retell the story of those last days of steam in the area. Depicted in this volume is the unusually wide variety of locomotive power which was to be seen throughout Bristol and Somerset during this era. Alongside the standard GWR and BR classes, are the many MR and LMS types which worked down as far as Bristol, some even making their way through Somerset. Here Southern and, very occasionally, Eastern Region engines were to be found, while the Somerset and Dorset line was the home of the unique class of 7F 2-8-0s. Accompanied by the author's informative captions these evocative pictures, often with a backdrop of splendid scenery, recapture the atmosphere of the end of the age of steam in Bristol and Somerset.

Book Locomotives of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway

Download or read book Locomotives of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway written by Tim Hillier-Graves and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although closed to traffic in 1966, with most of its infrastructure swiftly destroyed by British Railways, this unique railway line still lives in the minds of many, some too young to remember it in its heyday. For more then a hundred years it courted disaster and could on a number of occasions have succumbed to overpowering financial pressures, but it survived with the help of partnerships with larger, more secure companies, namely the Midland Railway and the London & South Western Railway. Later on, after the grouping in 1923, the line came under the control of the L M S and the Southern Railway. It was unfortunate that the line suffered in later years, from inter regional rivalry between the Western and Southern Regions of British Railways, which led to its eventual closure. The variety of companies involved in its running meant that during its lifetime the small pool of locomotives needed to service the line was supplemented by the best each partner could offer. So from the beginning to the end there were a myriad number of types of locomotive running over the Mendips providing a lively variety of motive power. This heavily illustrated book traces this unique and fascinating history and brings to life this singular, much missed and loved railway.

Book excerpt: Take a journey on The Somerset & Dorset Railway back to the halcyon days of steam to a time when a tablet was either taken for a headache or used to ensure only one train was on a single track section at a time, and blackberries were picked on the line-side to make a pie. The book will take you on the journey from Bath to Bournemouth describing the stations along the route and is complemented by tales from the footplate told by Somerset & Dorset men Wallace Moon and Geoff Akers. Then fast forward to the present and 50 years ago what to many was the best loved line of all was swept aside by the ruthless actions of Dr Beeching. But out of adversity comes opportunity and a spirited group of enthusiasts, all volunteers, has worked relentlessly since 1996 to lovingly restore the station at Midsomer Norton. We are now welcoming steam locomotives once again to the Somerset & Dorset Railway with the aim of edging closer and closer to Chilcompton Tunnel and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In mid-1964, Keith Widdowson got wind that the Western Region was hell-bent on being the first to eliminate the steam locomotive on its tracks by December 1965. The 17-year-old hurriedly homed in on train services still in the hands of GWR steam power, aiming to catch runs with the last examples before their premature annihilation. The Great Western Steam Retreat recalls Widdowson's teenage exploits, soundtracked by hits from the Beatles, the Kinks and the Rolling Stones, throughout the Western Region and former Great Western Railway lines. He documents the extreme disorder that resulted from that decision, paying tribute to the train crews who managed to meet demanding timings in the face of declining cleanliness, the poor quality of coal and the major problem of recruiting both footplate and shed staff. This book completes the author's Steam Chase series and provides a snapshot into the comradery that characterised the final years of steam alongside the long-gone journeys that can never be recreated.

Book Somerset and Dorset Steam Finale

Download or read book Somerset and Dorset Steam Finale written by Michael S. Welch and published by . This book was released on 2001-09-29 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is in full colour; The Somerset & Dorset is one of those railways which has a following far beyond its immediate area of operation and the interest keeps going although it is now 35 years since the passenger service from Bath to Bournemouth via Templecombe ceased. British Railways were determined to close the route as evidenced by the diversion of its most famous train the 'Pines Express' in 1962. But it took until March 1966 for the passenger service to cease completely and steam remained in charge until the end. The outstanding scenery, the busy and heavy through holiday trains from the Midlands and north of England, plus the old Midland motive power used into the 1960s, all made the route a magnet for photographers. The Fowler 2-8-0s built specially for the line by the Midland Railway added to the attractions and soldiered on until 1964. They are well represented in this book on both passenger and freight workings. The whole line is covered, including branches and connections, and the pictures show the changing variety of motive power up until the line's final demise.A goodly number of outstanding photographers have contributed to the book and many pictures are published for the first time, including some showing rarely seen workings.
