Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanism of Steam Engines The book has been planned primarily to meet the needs of students who take up this subject as a part of, or immediately following, their course in the elements of mechanism, before they study the theory and practice of heat engineering or machine design. The purpose of the authors has been to present the subject in such a way as to make clear to the beginner the mechanical principles on which the steam engine operates, with special reference to the valve gear and governing devices, and the various diagrams used for studying the same. Examples are given of the different types of mechanisms, these examples being chosen merely to illustrate principles and methods, without particular reference to their relative importance. Book Steam Engine Principles and Practice Classic Reprint

Download or read book Steam Engine Principles and Practice Classic Reprint written by Terrell Croft and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam-Engine Principles and Practice The economics of the use of condensers with steam engines and of employing multi-expansion engines are next considered and are followed by a division on steam-engine efficiencies and how to increase them. The material in the next division, on steam engines of modern types, concerns the distinctive features, economics and costs of engines of the present day. The testing of steam engines is then treated. Following this are divisions on the management, Operation and repair of reciprocating engines and on the use of superheated steam in engines which, it is hoped, will be of great value to the engineer. Next, the selection of steam engines is discussed from a purely but broadly economic standpoint. Finally, a thorough treatment of lubrication is. Presented which, although it relates Specifically to steam engines, Should prove of general value also as it applies to other machinery. Book The Steam Engine and the Indicator Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Steam Engine and the Indicator Classic Reprint written by William Barnet Le Van and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam Engine and the Indicator The early chapters refer especially to the history of the steam engine, and to the theory of the action of steam in the cylinder of a steam engine, and the succeeding ones to the application of the theory in practice. Having felt personally the want of more practical informa tion on the subject than is contained in existing works, it has been the aim of the writer to supply such want, and to enable those who have not the opportunity of making experiments to gain a more intimate knowledge of the indicator. And it is hoped that the directions here given for the practical applica tion of this instrument will at the same time give the volume a considerable degree of interest to those engineers who are conversant with its ordinary working, but lack a knowledge of the principles involved. Book Steam Engine Theory and Practice

Download or read book Steam Engine Theory and Practice written by William Ripper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam-Engine Theory and Practice This book is written as a sequel to the author's elementary book on "Steam." It was prepared in the first instance as notes for the second-year engineering students in this college, and deals, in as simple a form as possible, with those branches of the subject which are of fundamental importance to a sound knowledge of steam-engine design and management. Modern students of steam engineering have a great advantage over their predecessors, in possessing such a wealth of recorded practical experience as appears in the Proceedings of the Engineering Institutions, as well as in the Technical Journals, and the writer has to express his personal indebtedness to all these sources of information in the preparation of this book. The assistance received is acknowledged, as far as possible, throughout. Special attention has been given to the subject of the heat quantities involved in the generation and use of steam. For this purpose the temperature-entropy diagram has been used, and its applications in the solution of a number of ordinary everyday problems exemplified. In this connection, as well as for many beautiful graphical methods of illustration now employed by engineers, students and teachers of the subject are greatly indebted to the work of Mr. J. Macfarlane Gray, Capt. H. Riall Sankey, the late P. W. Willans, and many others. The writer desires to express his personal indebtedness to Capt. Sankey for his kindness in supplying him with copies of his temperature-entropy chart, which appears for the first time, as Plate I. of this book. This very ixnportant investigation occupies the fifth chapter, in which is introduced a second principle governing the operation of heat engines, not less important than the principle of the equivalence of heat and work. This principle is not probably in itself more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Steam Engine: Historical, Practical, and Descriptive To instruct students, it is necessary to state such elementary propositions in mechanics, as have a direct application to the subject of steam-engines; for this purpose a series of definitions are given in an introduction to the present volume. These definitions have been formed from a full examination of the works of the best writers on the theory of mechanics, viz., Belidor, Emerson, Smeaton, Hutton, Banks, Gregory, Robison, Young, and others. The author has endeavoured to preserve their modes of reasoning, and the mathematical accuracy of their conclusions, without employing the language of geometrical or algebraical analysis; but all quantities are represented in numbers, and their proportions established by the ordinary processes of arithmetic this plan has been adopted in order to render the principles very apparent to those who are not accustomed to any other mode of calculus. This part of the work is intended to give practical men an exact knowledge of the true principles upon which their operations ought to be conducted; and other parts to show the means of applying those principles to their daily practice, in the construction and use of steam-engines. Book A New Theory of the Steam Engine

Download or read book A New Theory of the Steam Engine written by G. De Pambour and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Theory of the Steam Engine: And the Mode of Calculation by Means of It, of the Effective Power, &C. Of Every Kind of Steam Engine, Stationary or Locomotive A mode perfectly similar is followed, for deter mining the vaporization which an engine ought to produce in order to produce a desired effect; that is to say, for resolving the third of the problems which we have presented above. As to the second of these problems, that which consists in determining the velocity the engine will assume under a given load, no solution of it has been proposed in this way, and we shall expose, farther on, some fruitless essays that have been made to resolve it in another way. As in the above-mentioned calculation no account is taken of friction, nor of some other circumstances which appear likely to diminish the power of the engine, the difference observed between the theoretical and the practical result excites no surprise, and is readily attributed to the circumstances neglected in the calculation.
