Download or read book Steam Engine Design Vol 2 written by Jay M. Whitham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam-Engine Design, Vol. 2: For the Use of Mechanical Engineers, Students, and Draughtsmen Clearance volume is useful for compression, as illustrated in $8. The clearance volume necessary for compression is, for the same power, greatest with steam of low initial pressure. Hence it is less with compound than with simple engines of the same power. Download or read book Steam Engine Design Vol 2 written by Jay M. Whitham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam-Engine Design, Vol. 2: For the Use of Mechanical Engineers, Students, and Draughtsmen The following pages treat of the application of the principles of mechanics to the design of the parts of a steam-engine of any type, or for any duty. They also treat of auxiliary attachments and constructive details. These are illustrated by numerous drawings. The various technical journals and the works of Rankine, Weisbach, Zeuner, Seaton, Marks, Donaldson, Van Buren, Rose, and others have been freely consulted, and due credit has been given. Chapters VII and VIII were written by P. A. Engineer Asa M. Mattice, U. S. Navy, and are here published, for the first time, by his kind permission. Special mention is due P. A. Engineer John C. Kafer, U. S. Navy, who delivered at the U. S. Naval Academy a course of lectures on the steam-engine to the author's class, as these lectures have formed, to some extent, the basis of this work. Book A Manual of the Steam Engine Vol 2

Download or read book A Manual of the Steam Engine Vol 2 written by Robert Henry Thurston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Steam-Engine, Vol. 2: Design, Construction, and Operation; For Engineers and Technical Schools (Advanced Courses) In the discussions of the effects of inertia, as exhibited in the action of the fly-wheel and of the reciprocating parts, the graphical methods have been preferred, where choice was permitted, for the reasons already given. The algebraic equa tions give isolated values of the quantity sought, also; while the curves obtained, in many cases, by graphical construction, are a visible history of the continuous variations of condition and result throughout the cycle, or the period studied. The physical concept is thus vastly more easily and satisfactorily obtained, and a correspondingly better understanding of the case is reached. The chapters on the construction and erection, and on the operation and care, of the engine are necessarily very concise. Book The Steam Engine and Other Steam Motors Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Steam Engine and Other Steam Motors Vol 1 of 2 written by Robert C. H. Heck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam-Engine and Other Steam-Motors, Vol. 1 of 2: A d104-Book for Engineering Colleges and a Treatise for Engineers; The Thermodynamics and the Mechanics of the Engine This work is mainly descriptive and analytical, developing and illustrating principles and establishing methods for solving the various problems which arise in connection with the working of the engine. The writer has planned a subsequent treatise, on the Performance and Design of the Engine: this will take up the quantitative and synthetical side of the subject, giving the digested results of a large number of tests, now available in works of ref er ence; setting forth methods of engine-testing; and developing, as far as practicable, a logical scheme of design, especially of the thermodynamic design of the engine. This is several times te ferred to, in the text, as Part II. (of a complete treatise). It will at once appear that the ground here covered is more extensive than is desirable for many courses of study: but the arrangement of matter is such as to facilitate selection and omis sion. Without attempting to map out a course in detail, it may be well to remark that certain very special discussions, as 6 (k), 13 (d), and the greater part of 527, are clearly indicated for omission. A good elementary class-room course would include, in Vol. I., 1 to 17, or all of Chapters I., II., and III., with minor omissions, in Chapter IV., 18, 19, 20 through (h), part of 21, 22, and some of 23 - the rest of this chapter belonging to the experimental course and forming an introduction to'part II. 24, and as much of the rest of Chapter V. As time permits, with em phasis on 5 29; in Chapter VII., 32, 33 through (c), 34 (b), 35 as desired, 36 (a), 39, 40 (a). A strong course in the mechanics of the engine would use practically all of this chapter - such a course to be largely carried out through graphical work in the drafting-room. Certain original features in this volume are, the formula for cylinder-condensation in 21, the curves and tables for the steam jet in Chapter V., and the full development of the radial analysis for shaking-force in 40. In regard to the chapter on mechanics, the writer would acknowledge his indebtedness to Professor J. F. Klein, many of the methods there set forth being based upon those in Notes on the Design of a High-speed Engine, or devel oped in connection with the long-continued use of that book. Book The Steam Engine and Other Steam Motors Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book The Steam Engine and Other Steam Motors Vol 2 of 2 written by Robert Culbertson Hays Heck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam-Engine and Other Steam-Motors, Vol. 2 of 2: A Text-Book for Engineering Colleges and a Treatise for Engineers; Form, Construction, and Working of the Engine, the Steam Turbine It has not been thought desirable to burden the text with refer ences showing the source of every illustration. Many drawings have been made from makers' prints and advertising literature; the majority, perhaps, have been redrawn from engineering periodicals, usually with the selection of only the part desired; a few have been copied from other books, notably Leist's Steuerungen [iir Dampi maschinen and Stodola's Steam Turbines, Third Edition (ger man); while half a dozen line-drawings from catalogues have been transferred directly. As to periodicals. Engineering, Power, The Amer-wan Engineer and Railroad Journal and Marine Engineering have been freely drawn upon for material. Book The Steam Engine Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book The Steam Engine Vol 2 of 2 written by American School Of Correspondence and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Steam Engine: A Practical Guide to the Construction, Operation, and Care of Steam Engines, Steam Turbines, and Their Accessories - Volume One is a work originally published by The American School of Correspondence and co-authored by Walter B. Snow and Walter S. Leland. The intent of the book is to introduce the great advances in steam power to the masses through a detailed but introductory description of a modern technology (at the time of writing) that would impact the lives of many. The Steam Engine is primarily intended for the enthusiast interested in steam power. The book begins with a detailed description of the steam engine, including the history of its development, a thorough examination of important engine parts, and an overview of the different types of steam engine. From there, the book progresses into a more focused discussion of engine operation and engine room accessories, including a vital section highlighting the importance of lubrication. The thermodynamics of the steam engine are then outlined, in what is probably the densest portion of the book. The text concludes with a look at the steam turbine, primarily focusing on its operation. The language included throughout is basic. The authors have intentionally excluded complicated mathematical theories in order to make this book approachable for the non-specialist. While some technical knowledge is certainly beneficial to reader's of The Steam Engine, one need not be an engineer in order to understand the principles discussed. As a practical guide to a complex technology, The Steam Engine is a great success. Enthusiasts will surely delight in the depth of information contained within this book, all of it presented in an easy to digest fashion. If you are at all interested in steam power, Snow and Leland's book is sure to please. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
