Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam and the Steam Engine: Land, Marine, and Locomotive The chief aim of the author of this book has been to supply a want that he, in common with a large body of teachers, has experienced for many years. There is on Steam no cheap work that a teacher can put into the hands of his pupils, to give them at once a full and comprehensive idea of the whole subject. The author has striven to supply this defect, and to produce a work correct in its facts, safe in its deductions, and containing, where possible, new and original matter, or the old matter presented under new aspects. How far he has succeeded is for others to judge. An attempt has been made, not only to give the reader an insight into the details and specialities of the different kinds of engines employed to do man's work, but to make him understand the various principles upon which each part of the Steam Engine 'does that work, the relation these parts bear to each other, and the life or physiology, so to speak, of the whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam and the Marine Steam-Engine Condensing. - The steam, when its work is done, is allowed to escape from the cylinder, but not usually to the atmosphere; it passes generally to an exhausted condensing vessel, where it is immediately condensed to water, and the resistance the exhaust steam would otherwise offer to the piston's motion is thus largely removed. In certain cases, as in locomotive engines, the con denser is omitted for Special reasons. The great majority of stationary land engines, however, and all marine engines, are condensing engines. Book The Locomotive Engine and Its Development

Download or read book The Locomotive Engine and Its Development written by Clement E. Stretton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Locomotive Engine and Its Development: A Popular Treatise on the Gradual Improvements Made in Railway Engines Between 1803 and 1893 As some newspapers often profess to record very extraordinary rates of speed, it may be advisable to point out one possible cause of error. We should beware of speed indicators which take their motion from the driving wheels of engines, as the Author, when the train was running no more than 55 miles an hour, has seen an indicator go up to 90 miles an hour, the increase being simply due to the slipping of the driving wheels. The power of steam was known to Hero of Alexandria about 200 b.c., or fully two thousand years ago, and a book he then wrote treated of the expansive force of steam, and described the cylinder, piston, slide-valve, and common clack-valve. But although the power of steam was known, no attempts appear to have been made to turn it to useful and practical effect, even in station ary engines, until 250 years ago. Book The Steam Engine and Its Inventors

Download or read book The Steam Engine and Its Inventors written by Robert Lindsay Galloway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam Engine and Its Inventors: A Historical Sketch AS the following sketch of the history of the Steam Engine is on a somewhat different plan from most of the treatises on the same subject which have preceded it, a few words of explanation in reference to the course pursued may be desirable. No attempt is made to give an account of all the machines in which steam has been employed. The sole object aimed at is to exhibit the successive steps in the development of the cylinder and piston engine, which is the great prime mover of modern times. This engine was not origin ally a steam engine; it passed through several phases of existence in which steam gradually came to perform a more and more important part. It was not the invention of one individual, nor of one nation, nor of one age. Its growth has been a gradual and slow process; important modifications of its mechanism have been effected from time to time. No fact.
