Book Dreaming of Money in Ho Chi Minh City

Download or read book Dreaming of Money in Ho Chi Minh City written by Allison J. Truitt and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2013-08-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expanding use of money in contemporary Vietnam has been propelled by the rise of new markets, digital telecommunications, and an ideological emphasis on money's autonomy from the state. People in Vietnam use the metaphor of "open doors" to describe their everyday experiences of market liberalization and to designate the end of Vietnam's postwar social isolation and return to a consumer- oriented environment. Dreaming of Money in Ho Chi Minh City examines how money is redefining social identities, moral economies, and economic citizenship in Vietnam. It shows how people use money as a standard of value to measure social and moral worth, how money is used to create new hierarchies of privilege and to limit freedom, and how both domestic and global monetary politics affect the cultural politics of identity in Vietnam. Drawing on interviews with shopkeepers, bankers, vendors, and foreign investors, Allison Truitt explores the function of money in everyday life. From counterfeit currencies to streetside lotteries, from gold shops to crowded temples, she relates money's restructuring to performances of identity. By locating money in domains often relegated to the margins of the economy-households, religion, and gender- she demonstrates how money is shaping ordinary people's sense of belonging and citizenship in Vietnam.

Book excerpt: Stolen gold from the Vietnam War, stolen again and hidden on a boat that is left behind by the US Navy. An old River Rat involved in the first theft runs across the boat 36 years later, tied up at a Vietnamese Navy Base in Saigon. Same boat, same numbers? Wondering if it's even possible that the boat is really the same and the gold, could even remotely still be hidden aboard? He enlists the aid of the only other person who knows what happened. A few old 'Spooks', two old river boat sailors, a lost orphan, an orphanage full of wonderful children and adults, plain simple country people, corrupt cops and government officials, along with some friends old and new join in some way to move things along. There are modern day cultural lessons and customs mixed in along with a lazy late night 'float' down a deserted river in Saigon. The story crosses and re-crosses Vietnam and spills into Laos for the final outcome. On the way an orphaned love child (his daughter from 1968) and an old orphanage become part of the present, the gold moves into the new century. As it all moves you are introduced to the beauty, the seduction, the mystery and magic of Vietnam present; along with the misery and heartbreak that comes with it. The reader also finds that there is no limit to the good, old gold can do, when in the right hands driven by decent minds and hearts, put it to work. This is no Mission Impossible roller-coaster ride but, a gentle trip from violent past memories to the joy and sweetness of present day Vietnam. The lush green hilly countryside where peace, love, beauty and friendship abide in the comfort of a very old but warm orphanage filled with joy.

Book Forests Are Gold

  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book Forests Are Gold written by Pamela D. McElwee and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests Are Gold examines the management of Vietnam's forests in the tumultuous twentieth century—from French colonialism to the recent transition to market-oriented economics—as the country united, prospered, and transformed people and landscapes. Forest policy has rarely been about ecology or conservation for nature’s sake, but about managing citizens and society, a process Pamela McElwee terms “environmental rule.” Untangling and understanding these practices and networks of rule illuminates not just thorny issues of environmental change, but also the birth of Vietnam itself.

Book Blue Gold

  • Author : Maude Barlow
  • Publisher : The New Press

  • Pages : 355 pages

Download or read book Blue Gold written by Maude Barlow and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Probably the most eloquent call to arms we’re likely to hear about the politics of water” (The Globe and Mail, Toronto). In this “chilling, in-depth examination of a rapidly emerging global crisis,” Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke, two of the most active opponents to the privatization of water show how, contrary to received wisdom, water mainly flows uphill to the wealthy (In These Times). Our most basic resource may one day be limited: Our consumption doubles every twenty years—twice the rate of population increase. At the same time, increasingly transnational corporations are plotting to control the world’s dwindling water supply. In England and France, where water has already been privatized, rates have soared, and water shortages have been severe. The major bottled-water producers—Perrier, Evian, Naya, and now Coca-Cola and PepsiCo—are part of one of the fastest-growing and least-regulated industries, buying up freshwater rights and drying up crucial supplies. A truly shocking exposé, Blue Gold shows in frightening detail why, as the vice president of the World Bank has pronounced, “The wars of the next century will be about water.” “Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke combine visionary intellect with muckraking research and a concrete plan for action.” —Naomi Klein, author of The Battle for Paradise “A sobering, in-depth look at the growing scarcity of fresh water and the increasing privatization and corporate control of this nonrenewable resource.” —Library Journal “An angry and persuasive account.” —Bloomberg Businessweek “The dire scenarios laid out in this comprehensive book are truly frightening.” —The San Diego Union-Tribune

Book excerpt: The author was born in 1940 and spent his childhood in two small villages, the paternal and the maternal, in southern Vietnam: Binh Chuan and Tuy An (An Phu). The villages were deeply affected by the powerful political events of the next fifty years. In this memoir (first sentence: "I was born as the Japanese Troops were invading northern Vietnam"), the author writes of what he saw, heard and knew, providing an invaluable social history of the country. Readers will learn about a people who have endured separation, dictatorship, carnage, persistent suffering and poverty, all the while yearning for independence and prosperity. Included are many stories--some funny, some heartbreaking--that reveal how the Vietnamese people lived, as well as their thoughts on war, on the French, Japanese and Americans, on the Nationalist and Communist governments, and on escape. The result is a heartfelt "social painting" of the nation.
