Book An Interpretive Guide to Operatic Arias

Download or read book An Interpretive Guide to Operatic Arias written by Martial Singher and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A premier singer and master teacher here tells other singers how to get the most from 151 famous arias selected for their popularity or their greatness from 66 operas, ranging in time and style from Christopher Gluck to Carlisle Floyd, from Mozart to Menotti. “The most memorable thrills in an opera singer's life,” according to the author's Introduction, “may easily derive from the great arias in his or her repertoire.” This book continues the work Martial Singher has done, in performances, in concerts, and in master classes and lessons, by drawing attention “not only to precise features of text, notes, and markings but also to psychological motivations and emotional impulses, to laughter and tears, to technical skills, to strokes of genius, and even here and there to variations from the original works that have proved to be fortunate.” For each aria, the author gives the dramatic and musical context, advice about interpretation, and the lyric—with the original language (if it is not English) and an idiomatic American English translation, in parallel columns. The major operatic traditions—French, German, Italian, Russian, and American—are represented, as are the major voice types—soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone, bass-baritone, and bass. The dramatic context is not a mere summary of the plot but is a penetrating and often witty personality sketch of an operatic character in the midst of a situation. The musical context is presented with the dramatic situation in a cleverly integrated way. Suggestions about interpretation, often illustrated with musical notation and phonetic symbols, are interspersed among the author's explication of the music and the action. An overview of Martial Singher’s approach—based on fifty years of experience on stage in a hundred roles and in class at four leading conservatories—is presented in his Introduction. As the reader approaches each opera discussed in this book, he or she experiences the feeling of participation in a rehearsal on stage under an urbane though demanding coach and director. The Interpretive Guide will be of value to professional singers as a source of reference or renewed inspiration and a memory refresher, to coaches for checking and broadening personal impressions, to young singers and students for learning, to teachers who have enjoyed less than a half century of experience, and to opera broadcast listeners and telecast viewers who want to understand what goes into the sounds and sights that delight them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Words are written to mold, make and re-shape the reader. There is a basic blueprint to one’s soul designed by his Maker. Things sympathetic to the soul’s blueprint tend to disturb and excite centers of awareness in the reader. It is for this reason that when an extraordinary “gift” is on public display countless souls will beat a path to its door. The singer’s voice, an athlete’s physical prowess in action on the playing field, the stroke of an artist’s brush upon the canvass, and yes, also words on parchment. The audience “draws” from the gift of words 'something' that excites and revitalizes their inner being. Words that transcend the ordinary plateau of a man’s thoughts elevate his being. Philadelphia Proverbs may accomplish just that.

Book Conversations With Seth Book One

Download or read book Conversations With Seth Book One written by Susan M. Watkins and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2005-04-15 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1963, Jane Roberts met a spiritual entity named Seth. He spoke through her and the lessons he taught proved timeless and crucial. From 1968 to 1975, Roberts held an ESP class, during which she channeled Seth. Susan Watkins was a member of that class. The knowledge gained from Seth helped Watkins and her classmates face serious illness, painful relationships, financial hardship, and natural catastrophe. It also changed their lives. In addition to being a well-written, highly entertaining historical account of the late Jane Roberts and her class, Conversations with Seth reveals the profound insights discovered by class members--insights into the origin of both the troubling and triumphant events in our lives and into the vast nature of human consciousness. Roberts' Seth material is consistently one of the top two most visited collections at the Yale University Archives. The story that launched the New Age movement.

Book excerpt: Three sexy, hilarious full-length Shacking Up novels by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Helena Hunting together in one convenient package for the first time! Shacking Up Ruby Scott is months behind on rent and can’t seem to land a steady job. She has one chance to turn things around with a big audition. But instead of getting her big break, she gets sick as a dog and completely bombs it in the most humiliating fashion. All thanks to a mysterious, gorgeous guy who kissed—and then coughed on—her at a party the night before. Luckily, her best friend might have found the perfect opportunity; a job staying at the lavish penthouse apartment of hotel magnate Bancroft Mills while he’s out of town, taking care of his exotic pets. But when the newly-evicted Ruby arrives to meet her new employer, it turns out Bane is the same guy who got her sick. Hooking Up Amalie Whitfield is the picture of a blushing bride during her wedding reception–her husband can be heard, by Amalie and their guests, getting off with someone else. She has every reason to freak out, and in a moment of insanity, she throws herself at the first hot-blooded male she sees. But he’s not interested in becoming her revenge screw. Amalie decides to go on her honeymoon alone, only to find the man who rejected her also heading to the same tiny island for work. But this time he isn’t holding back. They might agree that what happens on the island should stay on the island, but neither one can deny that their attraction is more than just physical. Making Up Cosy Felton is great at her job—so when the hottest guy she’s ever seen walks into the shop looking completely overwhelmed, she’s more than happy to turn on the charm and help him purchase all of the items on his list. Griffin Mills is using his business trip in Las Vegas as a chance to escape the broken pieces of his life in New York City but pleasantly surprised when he finds himself attracted to the sales girl that helped him. As skeptical as Cosy may be of Griffin’s motivations, there’s something about him that intrigues her. But sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas and when real life gets in the way, all bets are off.
