Book Rule of St Clare of Assisi and statutes of the province of Milan

Download or read book Rule of St Clare of Assisi and statutes of the province of Milan written by Poor Clares and published by . This book was released on 1463 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present example contains the 1463 statutes of the Poor Clares of Milan (1v-9v), apparently incomplete at the end, followed by the Rule of St. Clare, in a vernacular Italian (10r-15v), and ending with the vow of profession under the rule of St. Clare (15v). The 15th century witnessed a dispute over the interpretation of the rule, with some sects re-asserting the original austerity of the order. This phenomenon likely resulted in the present document, a manuscript reminder of the Rule and its statutes for a reformed community. Both the rule and statutes are in the vernacular, providing greater accessibility to the women in the order, and the inclusion of a vow of profession at the end points to the practical use of the document (the rule was read to the sisters every Saturday, and the statutes every two months), and the alterations and cancellations within the manuscript show further emendations to the practice. The two cancelled chapters have to do with the activities of the sisters outside the monastery.

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of American Catholic History written by Michael Glazier and published by Michael Glazier Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 1590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The encyclopedia lists essential data on all Catholic colleges and universities and on all religious institutions of men and women, but it was not feasible to have a separate entry on each. Therefore, a representative selection was made and articles were written on some of the larger and smaller colleges and universities; and the same procedure was adopted with the religious orders and congregations. Unfortunately, space did not permit the inclusion of every important person or event in American Catholic history"--Introduction.

Book Paradoxes of Inequality in Renaissance Italy

Download or read book Paradoxes of Inequality in Renaissance Italy written by Samuel K. Cohn, Jr. and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element explores the longest spell that can be computed from quantifiable fiscal records when the gap between rich and poor narrowed. It was the post-Black-Death century, c. 1375 to c. 1475. Paradoxically, with economic equality and prosperity on the rise, peasants, artisans and shopkeepers suffered losses in political representation and status within cultural spheres. Threatened by growing economic equality after the Black Death, elites preserved and then enhanced their political, social, and cultural distinction predominantly through noneconomic means and within political and cultural spheres. By investigating the interactions between three 'elements'-economics, politics, and culture-this Element presents new facets in the emergence of early Renaissance society in Italy.

Book Translation and Identity

Download or read book Translation and Identity written by Michael Cronin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Cronin looks at how translation has played a crucial role in shaping debates about identity, language and cultural survival in the past and in the present. He explores how everything from the impact of migration on the curricula for national literature courses, to the way in which nations wage war in the modern era is bound up with urgent questions of translation and identity. Examining translation practices and experiences across continents to show how translation is an integral part of how cultures are evolving, the volume presents new perspectives on how translation can be a powerful tool in enhancing difference and promoting intercultural dialogue. Drawing on a wide range of materials from official government reports to Shakespearean drama and Hollywood films, Cronin demonstrates how translation is central to any proper understanding of how cultural identity has emerged in human history, and suggests an innovative and positive vision of how translation can be used to deal with one of the most salient issues in an increasingly borderless world.
